  1. Update 1Luqmaan Cusmaan, 21, identified in fatal Columbus parking-lot shootingYou are here

How did a fight at a northeast Columbus apartment complex become a shooting that killed a 21-year-old man? Police have identified the setting and linked the gunfire to a dispute, but they have not publicly explained the escalation. The man killed was Luqmaan Cusmaan. Officers found a second victim, whose condition remains undisclosed, and police were still searching for a suspect in the latest local update, dated Tuesday, October 20. 1 31

One important question has a clearer answer: police say the neighboring Alrahma Mosque was not attacked. The shooting occurred Monday afternoon, October 19, 2026, in an apartment-complex parking lot in the 2200 block of Albert Avenue. A funeral was taking place next door, but investigators said the violence was unrelated to the mosque event or the people inside. 1 2 4

Those are separate parts of the story, not competing explanations. Police have ruled out an attack on the house of worship while leaving much of the fatal confrontation unexplained.

What police have established so far

According to the police account reported by WSYX, multiple people were fighting at the apartment complex when gunfire broke out. Sgt. James Fuqua described a dispute at the apartment building. The available reporting does not establish how many people were fighting, how many fired weapons or what the dispute concerned. 1 3

Cusmaan was initially found with what appeared to be a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. Monday’s accounts did not name him; WSYX’s Tuesday update identified him as 21-year-old Luqmaan Cusmaan. That identification adds a name and age to the initial account, but it does not explain his role in the confrontation or his relationship to anyone else involved. 1

Updated local reporting identifies Cusmaan and reports that police are searching for a suspect.

Tuesday’s WSYX account reported more than 30 calls after the gunfire. That number describes calls—not shots, shooters or victims. Likewise, the approximately 2:11 p.m. call time establishes when dispatchers received reports, not the exact moment shots were fired or officers arrived. 1

The Independent’s October 19 reporting, citing 10 WBNS, had put the police response at 2:10 p.m.; another account described it as around 2 p.m. The subsequent, more specific dispatch account should guide the chronology without turning those different descriptions into one exact response time. The 2:19 p.m. death pronouncement is consistently reported. 8 4 14

Why the mosque distinction matters

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives initially said agents were responding to a report of a shooting at a mosque. That was the description of the report prompting a response—not an investigative finding that the mosque had been targeted. Police subsequently placed the shooting in the adjacent apartment-complex parking lot. 2 5

We want to make it clear this was not an attack on the mosque.

Sgt. James Fuqua 19

Early reporting in The Independent on October 19 attributed to the ATF an account of shots being fired as funeral attendees left the mosque. Later police reporting separated the funeral from the shooting. The timing of two events beside each other does not establish a connection between them, and the available evidence does not show that mourners were targeted or that the funeral caused the dispute. 4 1 2

The second victim’s status also became clearer in one respect, but not another. Early federal reporting had not confirmed that person; the subsequent local police account said officers had found a second victim. Their identity, injury details, treatment and condition remain unestablished in the available updates. 4 1 14

This account rests on police statements carried by news outlets, rather than an incident-specific police release available for independent checking. Its October 19, 2026 dating follows those reports. The public scene address remains a block, not a verified building or apartment number. 17 14 12

As of 10TV’s October 20 update, police were searching for a suspect. The available reporting establishes no publicly released suspect identity, arrest or charges. The central unanswered question remains the one inside the parking lot: who fired, and how a dispute became fatal. 31

As aired 11 lines
  1. A shooting in an apartment-complex parking lot killed a 21-year-old man.
  2. Officers found a second victim, and police are searching for a suspect. Investigators still haven't explained how a fight at the complex turned into fatal gunfire.
  3. The man killed was Luqmaan Cusmaan. His identity became public Tuesday, October twentieth, after he went unnamed in Monday's first updates. Officers found him with what appeared to be a gunshot wound, and he died at the scene.
  4. The shooting happened Monday, October nineteenth, twenty twenty-six, in northeast Columbus. Police placed it in an apartment-complex parking lot in the twenty-two hundred block of Albert Avenue. Alrahma Mosque is beside the complex.
  5. Police say multiple people were fighting at the complex when gunfire broke out. The surrounding area includes a cluster of two-story apartment buildings. Investigators linked the violence to a dispute at the apartment building.
  6. Dispatchers received calls reporting gunfire at about two eleven that afternoon. Cusmaan was pronounced dead at two nineteen. The call time marks when dispatchers heard about the gunfire. It doesn't give the exact moment shots were fired or officers arrived.
  7. More than thirty calls followed the gunfire. Officers located the second victim shortly after Cusmaan was pronounced dead. Federal officials hadn't confirmed that second person in the early hours, but local police later confirmed that officers had found another victim.
  8. Federal agents initially responded to a report described as a shooting at a mosque. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives sent agents in response to that report. Columbus police subsequently placed the shooting at the adjacent apartment complex.
  9. Columbus police Sergeant James Fuqua said, “We want to make it clear this was not an attack on the mosque.” Police also said the violence was unrelated to the event inside and the people attending.
  10. A funeral was taking place at the mosque. Federal officials initially described shots being fired as attendees were leaving. Police later said the funeral and shooting were unrelated. The timing placed those events near each other, but police linked the gunfire to the apartment-building dispute.
  11. Police haven't released the second victim's condition. They have linked the fatal shooting to a dispute, but haven't explained who fired or how the confrontation escalated. By Tuesday, October twentieth, police were still searching for a suspect.
