Detroit home drew seven police calls before shooting that left three dead

Detroit police had received seven calls for service at a west-side home since the start of the year. Early Sunday, September 27, a fight at an after-hours gathering there ended with seven people shot: three men killed and four others wounded. Chief Todd Bettison said the address was already under investigation, but did not explain what that investigation concerned. A gunfire-detection alert preceded a call to police. Bettison put the response at about 7:21 a.m. Eastern time; some accounts place the call at 7:22. Officers were reported to have arrived roughly four minutes later. They found three men with fatal gunshot wounds. The four survivors—two men and two women—were taken to a hospital in private vehicles, with injuries reported as non-life-threatening. Bettison said an altercation preceded the gunfire and that people decided to settle it with violence. That establishes a sequence, not who fired or why the fight began. Community violence-intervention workers raised a possible dispute over a cellphone. One neighbor described noise and conflict at the home before Sunday and said he heard threats followed by around 12 shots. His account conveys what living near the venue was like, but it is not a verified count of shots or an identification of anyone who made the threats. The number is consequential, but it has limits. Bettison did not specify what those seven calls concerned, what officers found on earlier visits, or the nature and outcome of the investigation he mentioned. None of that establishes advance knowledge of this particular fight. Mayor Mary Sheffield called the killings tragic and pledged to crack down on illegal after-hours operations in homes or businesses. At the initial briefing, investigators had not identified the men who died. An official raised the possibility that some people involved might be related, while stressing that no relationship had been confirmed. Subsequent WXYZ reporting identified one of the dead through his family as Ansley Harris Jr., 45. That is a family identification, not an official police release of the three victims’ names. Early accounts variously described the dead as men approximately 30 and older or as men in their 30s; Harris’s reported age fits the former description, not the latter. As of early Monday, September 28, no arrest or suspect identity had been publicly announced. Bettison said investigators had leads and sought information. That leaves two kinds of answers outstanding: who shot seven people and killed three of them, and what the city knew—and did—about an after-hours address that had repeatedly brought police there.
