A suspect was arrested after a caravan standoff at Plan de Campagne. Investigators have yet to establish why the crew came under fire or whether the blaze was used to draw them in.

A vehicle-fire response near Marseille became a shooting scene, then a police standoff. Now, after a suspect’s arrest on Sunday, November 1, 2026, the central question is how those events fit together: whether the man suspected of shooting a firefighter commander also started the blaze, and why. The commander was very seriously wounded; his longer-term medical outlook has not been established.1
The firefighters had been called late that afternoon to the Plan de Campagne shopping zone in Les Pennes-Mirabeau, north of Marseille. A heavy-goods vehicle and cars were burning when the crew came under gunfire, according to Bouches-du-Rhône prefect Jacques Witkowski. The wounded firefighter, an adjudant-chef—a senior noncommissioned officer—was commanding the response.1
He was taken to Marseille’s Hôpital Nord for emergency treatment. Witkowski described him as very seriously wounded. Several hours later, in a BFMTV appearance dated November 1 at 21:17, Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan described the wound as “d’une gravité extrêmement importante”—extremely serious. That is an evening public assessment, not a detailed clinical bulletin or a prediction of recovery.124
No subsequent medical bulletin establishing improvement, deterioration or a more precise prognosis has been verified. The distinction matters: the latest established description comes from the evening of the attack, not from a fresh assessment on November 2.
One confirmed injury, other impacts unexplained
There is also an important limit to the casualty count. In franceinfo’s account, Witkowski said another firefighter and a vehicle had been “touchés,” or hit, without giving further details. Other contemporary wording described the additional firefighter as having been targeted. Neither description establishes a second bodily injury.112
The confirmed toll is therefore one very seriously wounded firefighter. The available official account does not explain what happened to the other firefighter, identify a wound or establish that a bullet struck a ballistic vest. An unexplained impact should not become a second casualty through repetition.
Police and RAID, France’s specialist police tactical unit, went to the scene. Les Pennes-Mirabeau Mayor Romain Amaro told franceinfo that the suspect barricaded himself in the caravan where he was staying when the officers arrived. Police subsequently arrested him with RAID support that same evening, reportedly shortly before 18:00 CET. That is an approximate reported time, not a verified minute-by-minute chronology.112
The arrest brought the barricade to an end within hours of the attack. But the account of what preceded it remains incomplete. Witkowski said the suspect had “probably” set the vehicles alight himself. That places the origin of the fire at the center of the inquiry without settling it.1
There is a substantial difference between suspected fire-setting and a demonstrated plan to lure firefighters into gunfire. Investigators have not established that the blaze was used as bait. Nor have they publicly explained a motive or the precise sequence connecting the burning vehicles, the shots and the retreat into the caravan.
What police custody does—and does not—establish
Aix-en-Provence prosecutor Jean-Luc Blachon announced that the suspect had been placed in garde à vue, police custody for questioning. The stated grounds were suspected attempted homicide against a person carrying out a public-service mission, destruction and damage by dangerous means, and possession of category-B weapons. Franceinfo reproduced the prosecutor’s statement.1
Those are the suspected offenses under investigation, not findings of guilt. The available account does not establish a later judicial charging decision or a court appearance. Likewise, the category-B weapons allegation should not be read as a completed forensic account of the firearm used.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez condemned the attack in a statement reported by franceinfo:
Je veux dire toute mon indignation face à cette agression violente gratuite à l’encontre de nos pompiers qui s’engagent pour protéger.
He expressed indignation at a gratuitous, violent attack against firefighters who commit themselves to protecting others. His condemnation addresses the stark fact of the response: a crew sent to extinguish burning vehicles instead had its leader taken to hospital with a very serious gunshot wound. It does not resolve the unanswered questions about intent.1
The next consequential developments are medical and judicial: a dated update on the commander’s condition, clarification of whether the additional firefighter suffered any injury, and evidence supporting—or undermining—the suspected connection between the fire and the shooting. The arrest ended the standoff. Establishing what happened before it remains the work of the investigation.
