Were two building fires reported minutes apart in Seoul connected? Fire officials’ initial assessment found no link, but the final investigative finding is still pending. What they have confirmed is that eight people were injured in the second fire, at Hanyang Building in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu, on October 20, 2026—and all eight injuries were minor. 12

The fire was inside Hanyang’s fourth floor, with an approximate incident time of 12:01 p.m. Korea Standard Time. It followed a separate fire nearby at Sinmyeong Building. The close timing makes the question of a connection understandable; it does not, on its own, supply an answer. 2 12

Gangnam Fire Station fire administration chief Kim Hyeon-seok gave an explicit assessment of the Hanyang casualties in a public briefing carried by YTN. In English translation, he said:

Eight people were injured in this fire, and all were confirmed to have minor injuries.

That is firmer than the preliminary wording in The Korea Herald, which said the eight people’s injuries did not appear serious. The fire-service classification establishes their reported severity, but not individual diagnoses, treatment details or whether any of the eight had subsequently been discharged. Those medical outcomes remain unconfirmed. 1 12

Two addresses, two separate incidents

Kim identified Hanyang Building at 830-69 Yeoksam-dong and Sinmyeong Building at 834-44 Yeoksam-dong. These are distinct lot-number addresses, not two descriptions of the same building. He estimated that the buildings stand roughly 200–300 metres apart; that distance is an official estimate, not a surveyed measurement. 12

Fire officials placed the Sinmyeong incident at about 11:54 a.m., on its third floor, and the Hanyang incident at about 12:01 p.m., on its fourth floor. Those approximate reported times are seven minutes apart. Yonhap’s report also identified the buildings separately and assigned the eight Hanyang injuries to the later fire. 2 12

The timing needs a little care. The briefing explicitly identified 11:54 a.m. as the time the first emergency report about Sinmyeong was received. For Hanyang, 12:01 p.m.—03:01 UTC—is the reported incident time. It has not been independently established as the precise moment of ignition, dispatch or firefighter arrival. A response chronology for one building should not become a clock for the other. 12

The same separation matters for the people affected. Hanyang’s eight injured are its own casualty count. Casualties and evacuations reported at Sinmyeong belong to that incident and should not be substituted for Hanyang’s figures. The two fires were discussed in the same briefing and combined in some news headlines, but that does not make their individual consequences interchangeable. 1 2 12

On the central question, Kim said the information available initially indicated no connection between the fires. He also said police would announce the final investigative results. That leaves a clear distinction between an initial assessment and a completed investigation: neither a shared cause nor one fire spreading to cause the other has been established. There is no confirmed basis to describe Hanyang’s fire as arson. 12

What remains unsettled at Hanyang

Hanyang is a reinforced-concrete building with ten above-ground floors, two basement levels and a total floor area of 4,900 square metres, according to Kim. Firefighters located the fire inside the fourth floor. The confirmed description does not identify the business or unit that burned, the number of occupants inside, the extent of smoke spread or the value of property damage. 12

A Hanyang-specific time for complete extinguishment also remains unverified. The public briefing included an initial-control announcement within a broader response chronology, but did not clearly assign that milestone to Hanyang. Initial control is not the same as complete extinguishment, so that announcement cannot safely be used to declare the Hanyang operation finished. 12

The Korea Herald’s report, published at 2:03 p.m. local time on October 20, still described investigation after extinguishment as the next step rather than giving a completed-extinguishment time. That account does not establish Hanyang’s later status. The remaining questions are concrete: when firefighting ended there, what caused the fire, how much damage it left and what happened subsequently to the eight injured people. 1

As aired 7 lines
  1. A fourth-floor fire injured eight people in Seoul. All eight have minor injuries, and another building nearby caught fire minutes earlier. Investigators are still working to determine what caused the fires and whether they're connected.
  2. Gangnam Fire Station has confirmed that all eight people injured at Hanyang Building suffered minor injuries. The fire happened on October twentieth. Those eight are the casualties identified specifically at Hanyang.
  3. Hanyang and Sinmyeong stand roughly two hundred to three hundred metres apart, fire officials estimate. Both are in Yeoksam-dong, in the Gangnam district. Each has a different address, and firefighters identified a separate fire at each building.
  4. Sinmyeong's third floor caught fire first. Fire officials put that incident at about eleven fifty-four in the morning, and Hanyang's fourth-floor fire at about twelve-oh-one. Those approximate incident times are seven minutes apart.
  5. The injury count at Hanyang remains separate from the casualties and evacuations at Sinmyeong. Fire officials' initial assessment found no connection between the fires, despite their proximity and timing.
  6. Hanyang has ten above-ground floors and two basement levels. The reinforced-concrete building covers a total floor area of four thousand nine hundred square metres. Firefighters located the fire inside the fourth floor.
  7. Police will give the final findings on whether the fires were connected. Hanyang's cause is still under investigation. Firefighters haven't confirmed when the Hanyang fire was fully extinguished.
