At least two people are reported dead after a passenger bus plunged into a gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district. Residents helped pull passengers from the wreckage, and evacuation from the bus was subsequently reported complete. But getting people out was only the first emergency: one account described eight injured passengers as critically ill, with no subsequent update establishing their condition. 1 18

The bus was travelling from Pechound toward Ramnagar when it left the Basantgarh–Ramnagar road at Gulli Gala, in the Pachound area of Basantgarh tehsil. News reports place the crash on Wednesday morning, October 21, 2026. India TV and The New Indian Express give a time of around 8 a.m.; Hindusthan Samachar says 8:30 a.m. The precise minute remains unsettled, but these accounts describe a morning crash. Pechound and Pachound are spelling variants used in reporting on the route and surrounding area. 1 19 21

Local residents began removing passengers before emergency teams arrived. Responders and senior officials, including a sub-divisional magistrate, then reached the scene. The injured were taken to the Public Health Centre in Basantgarh and the Sub-District Hospital in Ramnagar, with some patients subsequently referred onward to Government Medical College Udhampur. 18 1

A rescue without a settled toll

India TV and The New Indian Express reported two deaths and 15 injuries. Those are the fullest matching accounts, not a final reconciled casualty bulletin. AajTak’s updated October 21 report gives two deaths and 14 injuries. A KNO-attributed report carried by Kashmir Observer that day records one girl dead and 16 people injured. PTI’s account, published by Mid-day at 11:25 a.m. IST, reports 17 injured, eight critically, without establishing a fatality count in the available excerpt. 1 19 3 31 18

These are descriptions of the same crash, not separate groups of victims. They cannot be added together, and they do not establish whether the difference between one reported death and two reflects a later death or corrected information. Nor can an injury count safely be turned into a passenger total: no verified manifest establishes how many people were aboard.

Daily Excelsior reported that a four-year-old girl was among the two people killed. Her reported age has not been independently confirmed in the other available accounts. The girl mentioned in the one-death report must not be counted as an additional fatality. 11 31

The earliest reports offer a narrower picture rather than reassurance that survived the morning. An ANI dispatch carried by Devdiscourse at 10:20 a.m. IST reported at least 10 injured and no deaths reported so far. That initial account was overtaken by reports of fatalities; it is not a competing current claim that nobody died. 20 1

Union minister and Udhampur MP Jitendra Singh spoke with Deputy Commissioner Ananth Dwivedi and sought assistance and appropriate treatment for those affected. His initial no-casualties assurance was also superseded by a later update, quoted by India TV. 20 1

Unfortunately, two casualties have been reported. 10 injured have reached SDH Ramnagar. Out of 10, 3 are on way to GMC Udhampur. 3 more ambulances are about to reach SDH Ramnagar.

Jitendra Singh 1

Singh’s wording was “two casualties”; the separate reports explicitly describing two deaths are the basis for the reported fatal toll. His hospital figures also need to be read carefully. The three patients heading to Government Medical College Udhampur were among the 10 who had reached Ramnagar, not three additional injured people. The approaching ambulances came without patient numbers. Ten arrivals at one hospital did not mean only 10 passengers needed care. 1

The emergency moves into the hospitals

A KNO-attributed account says six seriously injured passengers were taken to Ramnagar while others received treatment at Basantgarh. That transfer figure is distinct from PTI’s report of eight critically injured people. The evidence does not establish that the two numbers refer to the same group, at the same time, under the same medical assessment. 31 18

Singh said all passengers had been promptly evacuated with local residents’ help. That supports reporting that people had been removed from the bus. It does not supply an independently checked passenger count or a formal final search notice. More importantly for the injured, his account described transfers still underway—not completed journeys or confirmed medical outcomes. 1

The crash’s cause is similarly unresolved. Reports describe the bus skidding while negotiating a sharp turn, then falling into the gorge and ending up badly mangled. Some accounts put the fall at about 100 feet, but no official measurement has been established. Skidding describes the reported sequence; it does not explain why the bus left the road. There is no verified finding here of speeding, mechanical failure, driver negligence or a particular road defect. 21 1 22

Singh also raised construction of the Ramnagar–Basantgarh road with Border Roads Organisation authorities in New Delhi. That is an administrative response, not a finding that the road caused this crash. No construction timetable or completed safety intervention was announced in the reported statement. 1

Known

  • At least two deaths have been reported, passengers were reportedly evacuated, and injured people required hospital care, including onward transfers. 11918

Unknown

  • The final death and injury counts, the current condition of the eight reported critically injured, and the outcomes of the three patients being transferred to Udhampur remain unconfirmed.

Next

  • A reconciled district or hospital casualty bulletin, confirmation of completed transfers, and findings establishing why the bus left the road.

The rescue has moved beyond the wreckage, but the outcome has not been settled. The next meaningful account must do more than repeat how many people were pulled from the gorge: it must establish how the most seriously injured are doing now.

As aired 15 lines
  1. Local residents pulled passengers from a bus that plunged into a gorge.
  2. At least two people are reported dead, and one injury count includes eight people in critical condition. Passengers have been evacuated, but the urgent question is how the most seriously injured are doing now.
  3. The bus was travelling from Pechound toward Ramnagar in Jammu and Kashmir. It left the Basantgarh–Ramnagar road at Gulli Gala, in the Pachound area of Udhampur district. Injured passengers were taken to hospitals in Basantgarh and Ramnagar.
  4. Residents began getting people out before emergency teams arrived. Responders and senior officials, including a sub-divisional magistrate, then reached the scene. The bus was badly mangled after the fall.
  5. The crash happened on Wednesday morning, October twenty-first, at roughly eight to eight-thirty local time. Pechound and Pachound are spelling variants used for the route and surrounding area. The reports describe the same crash.
  6. Two deaths and fifteen injuries are the fullest reported toll, but the figures still differ. The final number of people killed and injured hasn't been confirmed. The differences affect both the death count and how many survivors need care.
  7. The reported toll includes two dead and fifteen injured. Other counts give fourteen injuries, or one girl dead and sixteen injured. Another count lists seventeen injured, including eight critically. Those figures describe the same passengers and can't be added together.
  8. Early updates described at least ten injured and no deaths reported at that point. Nobody has explained whether the different death counts reflect a later death or corrected information. A girl among those reported killed was reportedly four years old; her age hasn't been confirmed.
  9. The bus reportedly skidded while negotiating a sharp turn, then fell into the gorge. Some descriptions put the fall at about a hundred feet. Nobody has explained why the bus left the road.
  10. Evacuation has shifted the immediate emergency toward hospital treatment. One group of six seriously injured passengers was reportedly taken to Ramnagar, while others received care at Basantgarh. That transfer count describes a different medical update from the figure of eight critically injured.
  11. Union minister and Udhampur MP Jitendra Singh spoke with Deputy Commissioner Ananth Dwivedi and sought assistance for the injured. Singh said local residents helped evacuate all passengers. He also urged officials to ensure appropriate treatment.
  12. Singh initially said there were no casualties. His later update replaced that assurance with the words, “two casualties have been reported.” He also gave a more detailed picture of patients reaching Ramnagar and being sent onward for care.
  13. Singh said ten injured people had reached the Sub-District Hospital in Ramnagar. Three of those ten were on their way to Government Medical College Udhampur. He said three more ambulances were approaching Ramnagar, without giving their patient numbers.
  14. Ten hospital arrivals tell us where patients were receiving care at that moment. More injured passengers were being treated elsewhere. Singh also raised construction of the Ramnagar–Basantgarh road with Border Roads Organisation authorities in New Delhi. He hasn't announced a construction timetable.
  15. Singh says passengers have been removed from the bus, but the medical outcome is still unresolved. Nobody has given a subsequent hospital update on the eight reported critically injured, or confirmed the condition of the three patients being transferred to Udhampur.
