Seneca recycling fire halts waste transfers as crews seek help
The landfill and transfer station were not burning, officials said, but a metal-pile fire forced a precautionary halt to transfers. No reopening time was confirmed around noon Monday.

Two waste operations—the landfill and transfer station—were not on fire at Oconee County Waste & Recycling in Seneca, South Carolina, on Monday, November 2. But the transfer station still had to stop work. A large fire in the nearby metal recycling area interrupted disposal service while firefighters sought additional personnel and water to fight it.1
As of the latest reports around noon Eastern Standard Time, crews were still working to bring the fire under control off Wells Highway. There was no confirmed containment announcement or reopening time for transfer operations. For people bringing waste to the facility, the immediate problem extended beyond the pile that was burning.12
Facility officials, quoted by FOX Carolina, said transfers had been temporarily halted as a safety precaution—not because the transfer station itself was ablaze. WYFF described the fire more specifically as involving a metal pile near the Solid Waste office. Neither account established the size of the burning area or precisely which materials were involved.12
The landfill and transfer station are NOT on fire. However, transfer station operations have been temporarily halted as a safety precaution while crews work to contain the fire.
A response underway before noon
Seneca City Fire requested help from surrounding departments for personnel and water supply. The request establishes that crews sought additional resources; the available reporting did not identify the assisting departments, how many firefighters or vehicles were involved, or how much water the response required.12
The timing needs care. FOX Carolina’s November 2 report described crews responding “Monday afternoon.” But WYFF’s same-day account placed smoke around Wells Highway during the morning and quoted a fire-department statement issued just before noon saying firefighters were already operating at the scene. The response was therefore underway by late morning; neither report supplies a verified ignition or dispatch time.12
Drivers were warned to expect delays in the surrounding area while the response continued. That warning matters both to through traffic near Wells Highway and to people approaching the waste facility. It was not, however, a confirmed announcement that Wells Highway was closed, and no designated detour was established in the available reports.12
What the shutdown does—and doesn’t—mean
The clearest service notice was the temporary suspension of transfer operations. It did not establish that every county recycling site was closed, that the landfill was accepting visitors, or that access to the entire complex was prohibited. “Not on fire” describes the condition of an operation; it is not the same thing as “open for business.”12
The county’s routine landfill schedule is Monday through Saturday, 7:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Those published hours are ordinary operating information, not an incident-specific assurance of service. They cannot be used as evidence that transfers have resumed during the fire response.18
Published addresses also need to be kept separate from the fire location. South Carolina’s recycling directory lists the county recycling contact at 15028 Wells Highway; the county lists the Seneca construction-and-demolition landfill at 15031 Wells Highway. Neither listing establishes the street number of the burning metal pile. The supported location remains the metal recycling area off Wells Highway, near the Solid Waste office—not a fire in the landfill.31812
Witnesses reported smoke, but the available information did not establish incident-specific air-monitoring results, exposure findings or smoke precautions. It also did not establish an injury count or explicitly confirm that nobody was hurt. Those gaps should not be turned into either a clean bill of health or a claim of toxic exposure.2
The practical question is when the area can be made safe enough for transfers to restart. No reopening deadline had been announced in the available accounts. Until an incident-specific update changes that, the confirmed consequence is a suspended waste-transfer service alongside an active firefighting response, even though the transfer station itself was not burning.12
