After separate Halloween-night shootings left three people dead and seven injured across Philadelphia, gunfire wounded three more people—including a 14-year-old boy—Sunday evening around the entrance to SEPTA’s 56th Street Station. A 26-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition. The teenager and a 25-year-old man were listed as stable, despite each having suffered multiple gunshot wounds.2
The shooting happened around 6:45 p.m. on November 1, 2026, at 56th and Market Streets in West Philadelphia. No arrests had been announced in the latest available Sunday-evening reports, and investigators had not established whom the shooter intended to hit. The station serves the Market-Frankford Line.12
Police said the 26-year-old man was shot five times throughout his body and taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. The boy was struck twice in his left arm and twice in his upper right thigh. The 25-year-old man suffered one gunshot wound to his right arm and two to his back, according to police details reported by CBS Philadelphia.2
Those hospital conditions describe the evening after the shooting, not a later recovery update. “Stable” should not obscure the extent of the injuries: the child had four gunshot wounds, and the other man had three. No subsequent account of their recovery has been established.2
The entrance, not an established platform scene
The location requires care because the first description changed. NBC10 reported that police initially placed the shooting on the station platform, but a SEPTA spokesperson subsequently said it happened outside the station. That clarification displaced the initial platform account; it did not settle exactly where each victim was when struck.12
Two other accounts describe movements that have not been reconciled. In its report dated November 2, 6abc Philadelphia attributed to authorities a surveillance-video account showing the gunman opening fire as three male victims walked up the stairs toward the platform.1
CBS Philadelphia’s November 1 evening report carried a more specific SEPTA description: two victims were shot outside, while a third was on a bicycle in the station vestibule—the entry area—when he was hit. That person then fled farther into the station, the transit agency said. SEPTA did not identify which of the three victims was the cyclist.2
The available reporting does not explain how the stairway account fits with the account of a cyclist in the vestibule. The supported description is therefore a shooting around the station entrance, not a claim that all three people were shot on the platform. Their exact positions remain unresolved.12
A recovered gun, an unresolved target
Investigators also had not established whether all three victims knew one another. Inspector D.F. Pace told 6abc that the teenager appeared to be with one of the two men, while cautioning against treating that observation as proof that the three were together.1
It's unclear if all three knew each other, however, and it's unclear who exactly was being targeted by the shooter.
That uncertainty matters. The boy’s presence with one man does not identify the intended target, establish a relationship among all three victims or explain why the gunman fired. No motive had been established in the available reporting.1
Police recovered a handgun in a backpack, but its connection to the attack remained unclear. The recovery cannot yet be described as finding the weapon used in the shooting, nor does it establish that the backpack belonged to the gunman. No suspect identity or description was established in the reports.1
For riders, the immediate consequence was a loss of access to this stop. SEPTA said trains would bypass 56th Street Station in both directions until Sunday’s service ended. That was a station-specific bypass, not an announced shutdown of the entire Market-Frankford Line.1
The announced bypass had a limited duration, but no later restoration notice or exact time for station service to resume was established. The outstanding questions are more consequential than the initial confusion over the platform: how the three patients recover, who fired, and whom the shooter was trying to hit. Sunday evening’s reports left those questions unanswered.12
