Wissenschaft · Erholung von KorallenEin gesunder Klon half einer ausgebleichten Koralle, sich zu erholen. Kann die Verbindung auch Riffen helfen?Verfasst 5. November 2026 um 07:28 UTCTranskript0:07Bleached coral regained its color after touching a healthy copy of itself.0:11Researchers created a living connection that let beneficial algae move into the0:15bleached coral.0:16It offers a possible way to help coral recover, but the demonstrated method depends0:21on a healthy genetic match.0:23The challenge is whether that small laboratory connection can become a reliable tool0:27for restoring reefs.0:29The experimental fragments measured about one to one and a half centimeters across.0:34The aquarium work involved a single coral species.0:37At that scale, researchers could bring a living bleached fragment directly against a0:43healthy genetically identical counterpart.0:45A bleached coral can still be alive.0:47It has lost the symbiotic algae that give it color and help sustain it.0:53Replenishing those algae can help it recover, provided the coral itself remains0:58capable of recovery.0:59The coral's tissues fused where they touched, that formed a bridge, and beneficial1:05algae moved into the bleached coral within a few days.1:08Color returned over the following weeks as the recipient replenished the algae it1:13had lost.1:14Genetic compatibility makes that connection possible.1:17The clearest demonstrated pairing is a coral and its own clone, which shares its1:22genetic background.1:23A restoration team using this approach would need suitable healthy donor material as1:28well as a living recipient.1:30Stanford University publicly announced the research on October14,2026 .1:35The study examined recovery through the transfer of symbiotic algae from healthy1:40corals.1:41Its aquarium comparison tested a particularly useful difference.1:45Direct contact versus a tiny gap.1:48Five bleached fragments touching healthy genetic clones recovered.1:52Five separated from their healthy partners by just a few millimeters didn't recover1:58in that comparison.1:59Under those conditions, direct contact made the difference, even with a healthy2:04coral very close by.2:05That result supports the tissue bridge approach under the tested conditions.2:10Extending it means finding out how it performs across more species and genetic2:15pairings.2:16Then, in natural reef conditions, five recovering fragments provide an encouraging2:21starting point for that work.2:22Over nine weeks, the formerly bleached coral became visually indistinguishable from2:27its healthy neighbor.2:29Algal repopulation was also described as early as four weeks.2:33Those are different milestones, so nine weeks shouldn't be treated as a minimum2:37recovery time.2:38The visible change is striking, but color tells only part of the biological story.2:43Researchers also need to know whether the recovered coral survives over the long2:48term, resumes growth and reproduction, and keeps the benefit through renewed heat2:53stress.2:54One week of contact was enough in an additional test for recovery to continue after2:59the corals were separated.3:01That suggests the connection might only need to be temporary.3:04How reliably such a brief treatment works still needs testing.3:08A temporary connection.3:10Could change how researchers approach the intervention, but they would still need3:14genetically compatible material, and they would need to understand what donating3:19algae means for the healthy coral.3:21The practical challenge extends beyond getting the recipient's color back.3:25The demonstrated recovery happened in a controlled aquarium experiment.3:30Turning it into reef restoration will require field testing and evidence of lasting3:35benefit.3:36Recovery after bleaching also leaves a separate challenge: whether the coral can3:41withstand another episode of heat stress.3:43Compatible living corals can form a tissue bridge that helps a bleach recipient3:49replenish its algae and regain color.3:51Researchers haven't yet shown that this can deliver reliable, lasting recovery3:56across a reef or protect recovered coral from renewed heat stress.Artikel lesenChronologie der GeschichteHeyDex
