Two passengers died after being taken to hospitals, and the driver died at the scene, when a car fleeing California Highway Patrol officers struck a concrete wall at a freeway exit in the Baldwin Park area early Saturday, Nov. 7. Four people were inside. Whether the fourth occupant survived remains unresolved in conflicting reports of the crash.124
The collision ended a brief, high-speed pursuit on westbound Interstate 10 in Los Angeles County. The driver of a red 2011 Toyota Corolla tried to leave the freeway at Francisquito Avenue, failed to negotiate the offramp’s curve and hit the wall, according to CHP accounts reported by local outlets. No other vehicles were involved.24
At least three deaths are supported by the reporting. NBC Los Angeles and People describe three people killed and a fourth passenger seriously injured. SGV CityWatch, also citing CHP, reports that everyone in the car died. Those accounts cannot be combined into a settled account of the passengers’ outcomes, and the number of outlets reporting three deaths does not by itself resolve the fourth person’s fate.245
A short pursuit, then emergency aid
Officers attempted to stop the Corolla for unsafe driving at high speed on the westbound 10 Freeway near Holt Avenue. The driver did not yield, and officers pursued him as he continued at high speed toward the Francisquito Avenue exit. People’s account quotes a CHP release describing the reason for the attempted stop as “observed unsafe driving.”245
The timing is approximate. CBS Los Angeles, citing CHP, places the pursuit’s start at about 4:10 a.m. and the impact roughly two minutes later. NBC Los Angeles uses about 4:10 a.m. for the reported crash without clearly separating the attempted stop from the collision. The available accounts establish a short sequence, not a fully reconciled minute-by-minute record.14
Officers found the four occupants unconscious and began providing medical aid. Los Angeles County firefighters responded and took over emergency treatment and transport, according to local reporting. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while all three passengers were taken to hospitals. No officer injuries were reported.12510
The reports identify the passengers as two 20-year-old men and a woman whose age was not released. The male driver’s age also was not released. Authorities were withholding the occupants’ names pending notification of their relatives. Nothing in the available reporting establishes that any passenger participated in the driver’s decision to flee.45
The fourth occupant’s unresolved fate
In NBC Los Angeles’s three-death account, one 20-year-old male passenger and the woman died after transport. The other 20-year-old man was taken to Los Angeles General Hospital with major injuries. People likewise reports that one of the two male passengers died and that the woman died at a hospital. Those reports describe a survivor at the time of their accounts, not a verified current condition.45
SGV CityWatch’s competing account says both 20-year-old men died after being taken to trauma centers—one to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center and the other to Los Angeles General Medical Center. It also says the woman died at Los Angeles General after treatment for major injuries. The outlet attributes the four-death announcement to CHP.2
No original CHP casualty release or authoritative clarification was obtained to reconcile those incompatible outcomes. The distinction is not a minor correction to a total: it determines whether this crash left a severely injured survivor or killed everyone in the car.
Other consequential details also remain provisional. CBS Los Angeles reported, explicitly citing CHP, that the Corolla struck the barrier at 100 mph. The other detailed accounts establish high-speed flight but do not supply a measured impact speed. The 100-mph figure should therefore be understood as reported, not as a final crash-reconstruction finding.125
CBS also reported that authorities raised possible drug or alcohol impairment. That suspicion is not a confirmed toxicology result or a finding that intoxication caused the collision. The reported unsafe driving, failure to yield and high-speed flight are separate from the still-unresolved impairment question.1
CHP subsequently cancelled the SigAlert and announced around noon that the Francisquito Avenue onramp and offramp would reopen. That announcement updated road access; it did not resolve the casualty reports.
CHP’s Southern Division Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team and Critical Incident Investigation Team are handling the traffic-crash and criminal investigation. Their work still needs to establish the final impact speed and any role of impairment. The most immediate clarification, however, is about a person rather than the mechanics of the crash: what happened to the fourth occupant.25

- A fleeing driver hit a concrete wall, killing himself and two passengers. Four people were inside the car during the police pursuit in the Baldwin Park area. At least three are dead, but the final toll is disputed. The unresolved question is whether the fourth person survived.
- The car struck the wall at the Francisquito Avenue offramp from westbound Interstate 10. The crash happened early Saturday, November seventh, in Los Angeles County. That freeway exit is the consistent collision location despite differing city descriptions.
- CHP officers tried to stop a red 2011 Toyota Corolla for unsafe driving at high speed near Holt Avenue. The car was heading west on the 10 Freeway. The driver didn't pull over, and officers pursued him as he continued at high speed.
- The driver struck the wall roughly two minutes after the pursuit began, around four ten in the morning. The timing is approximate. Another description places the crash itself around four ten, without separating the attempted stop from the collision.
- The driver tried to leave the freeway at Francisquito Avenue. He failed to make a curve on the offramp and drove into the concrete wall. No other vehicles were involved. The four people inside the Corolla were the people caught in the collision.
- The driver died at the scene. All three passengers were taken to hospitals, where at least two died. That puts the minimum death toll at three, with the conflicting fourth-death claim still affecting whether anyone survived.
- Officers found the occupants unconscious and began giving medical aid. Los Angeles County firefighters then took over emergency treatment and transport. No officers were reported injured. The emergency response continued beyond the freeway, as hospitals treated the passengers' injuries.
- The three-death total includes the driver, a twenty-year-old man and a woman. The four-death total includes both twenty-year-old men and the woman. Those conflicting outcomes leave the fourth occupant's fate unresolved.
- Both male passengers were twenty. The driver's age and the woman's age haven't been released. Authorities are withholding the occupants' names while their relatives are notified.
- One male passenger was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, and the other went to Los Angeles General Medical Center. The woman also went to Los Angeles General. The disagreement concerns their eventual outcomes after treatment.
- The Corolla was fleeing at high speed before the collision. The more precise figure attached to the wall impact is one hundred miles an hour. That figure carries a qualification because investigators haven't released a final crash-speed calculation.
- The car reportedly hit the wall at one hundred miles an hour. CHP also raised possible drug or alcohol impairment. Impairment hasn't been confirmed, and investigators haven't determined that intoxication caused the crash.
- The crash shut the Francisquito Avenue offramp and blocked surrounding streets during the emergency response and investigation. A later traffic alert also covered the onramp. Those restrictions changed during the day, with CHP announcing around noon that both ramps would reopen.
- CHP cancelled the SigAlert and announced that the Francisquito Avenue onramp and offramp would open. That announcement updated the earlier closure notice. The casualty dispute continued separately from the change in road access.
- CHP's Southern Division Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team and Critical Incident Investigation Team are handling the traffic-crash and criminal investigation. At least three people died in the collision. CHP still needs to clarify whether the fourth occupant survived.
