Police say they were called to Orient Beach at about 7 a.m. on Tuesday, October 20. News24 places the shark attack that killed a swimmer there at around 8 a.m. Those accounts do not fit together: officers cannot have found her body before the attack happened. The death is confirmed; the precise time of the attack is not.16
The victim was a 65-year-old woman swimming with an open-water group off South Africa’s Eastern Cape coast. Her death prompted the closure of Orient Beach and Eastern Beach in KuGompo, formerly East London. By Wednesday, October 21, another consequential uncertainty remained: no updated municipal notice had been established confirming whether those restrictions had been lifted, continued or changed.12022
A group’s effort to save her
Fellow swimmer Mike Loewe told state broadcaster SABC that members of the open-water group responded to her distress signal and brought her ashore, according to the AP account. A medic within the group tried to save her, but she was declared dead at the scene. It is an account of fellow swimmers reaching her and attempting to help, not simply a body being discovered later.1
The published account does not describe the particular gesture or sound that signalled distress, identify which swimmers carried out each part of the rescue, or establish whether Loewe personally brought her in. Nor does it specify the resuscitation procedure. A more detailed reconstruction would go beyond what that account supports.1
Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality explicitly confirmed the fatal attack through spokesman Luzuko Buku. His statement located the death at Orient Beach and described the victim as a swimmer.1
The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality is deeply saddened to confirm that a fatal shark attack occurred at the Orient Beach this morning, resulting in the tragic loss of a swimmer.
Eastern Cape police spokeswoman Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa told AP that officers were called to the beach at about 7 a.m. and found the woman’s body. Police opened an inquest into her death. No findings from that investigation have been established in the available reporting, and no shark species has been verified.1
The timing discrepancy needs clarification, not a silently chosen hour. TimesLIVE’s October 20 report describes approximately 7 a.m. as the police call time; Citizen/LNN’s report that day describes 7 a.m. as officers’ arrival. News24’s October 20 account puts the group swim and attack at around 8 a.m. None of those accounts supplies the explanation needed to reconcile the sequence. For now, Tuesday morning is the defensible description of when the attack occurred.426
A warning beyond Orient Beach
The immediate safety response extended beyond the place where the woman died. The Coastal reported on October 20 that both Orient Beach and Eastern Beach had been closed until further notice. EC News Live’s report of a municipal notice carried the warning to stay out of the water. Neither account supplied a fixed reopening date.2022
The scope of that warning should not be embellished. The reporting establishes a water-entry warning and two named beach closures, but does not settle whether access to the sand was also prohibited or set out separate rules for surfing and diving. Those details require the municipality’s current instructions, not assumptions about what a beach closure usually means.2022
Two official processes now matter for different reasons. The police inquest concerns the woman’s death; an updated municipal notice would tell the public what restrictions apply at the two beaches. An investigation being opened does not answer the access question, and an old closure announcement cannot be treated as a newly checked status report.
For swimmers, the practical conclusion is narrow but important: Tuesday’s warning must not be mistaken for permission to return on Wednesday. A current municipal notice is still needed to establish whether either beach has reopened and, if so, on what terms. The evidence establishes the fatality and the initial closures. It does not yet establish the next safe, authorised opportunity to enter the water.2022

- A shark killed a 65-year-old swimmer at Orient Beach.
- Authorities closed two beaches afterward and warned people to stay out of the water. That warning extended beyond the place where she died.
- The practical question now is whether the municipality has since changed those restrictions.
- The woman died on Tuesday morning, October twentieth, on South Africa's Eastern Cape coast. Orient Beach is in KuGompo, the city formerly known as East London. Eastern Beach was the second beach closed after the attack.
- Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality confirmed the fatal attack through spokesman Luzuko Buku. Police spokeswoman Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said officers found the woman's body at the beach after being called there.
- Police say they were called around seven, while the attack reportedly happened around eight. Another account puts officers' arrival at seven. Those times don't fit together. The attack happened Tuesday morning, but its precise time is unclear.
- The woman has been publicly identified as Janine Lochrenberg, a retired radiographer, although police haven't confirmed her name. She was swimming with an open-water group when the attack happened.
- Fellow swimmer Mike Loewe said members of the group responded to her distress signal and brought her ashore. A medic in the group tried to save her, but she was declared dead at the scene.
- Police have opened an inquest into her death. That investigation is the next step in examining what happened to the swimmer.
- Orient Beach and Eastern Beach were closed until further notice on Tuesday. The public warning was to stay out of the water. By Wednesday, October twenty-first, it wasn't clear whether the municipality had lifted, continued or changed those restrictions.
- The municipality gave no fixed reopening date in Tuesday's warning. A current municipal notice is still needed to tell swimmers whether they can enter the water at either beach.
