Two postal workers shot in Des Moines; third hurt escaping
זמין באנגלית
Two postal workers were shot inside their Des Moines workplace Thursday morning, and a third was injured in a fall while trying to escape the gunfire. All three were receiving hospital care after the shooting at the city’s main post office. Police took an adult woman who worked at the facility into custody nearby.2
Des Moines police Sgt. Paul Parizek said the injuries did not appear life-threatening. That was a preliminary assessment while the employees were being treated—not a final medical prognosis or word that anyone had been discharged. The injured workers were two women and one man; the available account does not establish which suffered gunshot wounds and which was hurt in the fall.2
They're all at the hospital; they are being cared for right now.
By about noon local time on November 5, 2026, police had secured the building and neighboring school district facilities had lifted precautionary restrictions on entry and exit. But the investigation had not publicly established why the shooting happened. The suspect had not been publicly identified, and no specific criminal charges were established in the available reporting.231
The gunfire occurred on the second floor of the United States Postal Service processing and distribution facility at 1165 Second Avenue, just north of downtown. The four-story building houses a regional mail-sorting operation as well as a public walk-in service counter; the shooting was in an employee-only area upstairs. MercyOne Medical Center stands across the street, and some injured workers made their own way to hospital.269
A detention outside the building
Multiple emergency calls came from inside the post office around 9:10 a.m. Witnesses helped officers identify the suspected shooter, who was detained outside the postal building under the nearby Interstate 235 bridge. Parizek put the detention 11 minutes after the initial report—roughly 9:21 a.m., though the report time itself was approximate.92
The response brought together Des Moines police, Pleasant Hill police, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol. Officers searched the building, and police declared the scene secure.1
KCCI and CBS News quoted Parizek saying officers responded within three minutes of the report. The Independent gave a first-officer arrival estimate of three and a half minutes after dispatch. Those intervals use somewhat different starting descriptions; they support an arrival within minutes, not a single precisely reconciled response time.261
The emergency also disrupted three nearby Des Moines Public Schools buildings. Around 9:20 a.m., police notified the district, and Carver Elementary School, the DMPS Welcome Center and the Central Nutrition Center entered Secure status. Under that precaution, nobody could enter or leave the buildings. It was a response to violence nearby, not a report that those facilities had been attacked.2
The district’s detailed statement, reproduced by KCCI, separates two later notifications: at 9:30 a.m., police told staff a suspect was in custody nearby; at 10 a.m., police advised that entry and exit could safely resume. Secure status was then lifted at all three buildings. Neither notification should be mistaken for the moment officers detained the woman.2
The morning sequence also resolves a material error in the published accounts. In its November 5 report, The Independent placed the response at 9:10 p.m. KCCI and CBS News reported approximately 9:10 a.m. that same day, consistent with the district’s restrictions ending at 10 a.m. This was a Thursday-morning shooting, not an evening incident.126
Custody does not explain the violence
Governor Kim Reynolds said she was in contact with the Department of Public Safety. “The suspected shooter is in custody and the investigation is ongoing,” she said in a public statement, thanking law enforcement for the immediate response.24
The detention answered the immediate question of where the suspected shooter was. It did not answer what led to the gunfire. Police had disclosed no confirmed motive by the approximately noon reporting cutoff. The fact that the suspect and the injured people all worked at the facility does not establish a workplace grievance, a personal dispute or any other explanation.231
For the injured workers, the next consequential news is medical: how their treatment and recovery progress. For the investigation, it is identification, any charging decision and evidence explaining what happened upstairs. The building was secure and the neighboring district restrictions were over; those outcomes should not be confused with the workers’ recovery or a completed account of the violence.

- Parizek said officers were at the scene within three minutes of the report. Another first-officer estimate was three and a half minutes after dispatch. Those intervals use different starting descriptions, but both put officers there within minutes.
- Police put the woman's detention eleven minutes after the initial report. Witnesses helped identify her near the post office. Probation patrol officers were involved in taking her into custody in the bridge area, also described as a nearby bike trail.
- The school precautions reached three nearby buildings. Around nine-twenty, police notified Des Moines Public Schools, and Carver Elementary School, the district's Welcome Center and its Central Nutrition Center entered Secure status. That meant nobody could enter or leave those buildings.

Both the mayor and senator expressed concern for those affected, while Parizek described the workers' hospital care.

The three injured employees were receiving hospital treatment, with police still describing their injuries as apparently non-life-threatening.
- Officers had secured the building, but police hadn't said what led to the gunfire.
