On 16 October, HeyDay News reported masked men attacking Palestinian olive harvesters near Abu Falah in the occupied West Bank. The next day, a separate harvest visit in Taybeh, near Ramallah, ended with two Palestinians and a visiting French mayor reportedly injured, and a Belgian consular vehicle’s window smashed. This time, European diplomatic representatives were among those attacked. The danger facing harvesters had reached the people who came to join them.12
Belgium is pressing for European Union sanctions over the assault on Saturday, 17 October 2026. Israeli police have opened an investigation, and Israel’s military and foreign minister have acknowledged that Israeli rioters attacked diplomatic representatives. The immediate test is no longer whether senior officials will condemn the violence. It is whether investigators identify the individuals responsible and bring them to justice. No verified arrest, charge or completed finding had been reported in the accounts available on 17 October.16105
The delegation included Belgium’s consul general in Jerusalem, French and Polish diplomatic representatives, and Catholic Church representatives. They were visiting Taybeh, a largely Christian Palestinian village, for olive-harvest activities. Also present were Bernard Baudoux, mayor of Aulnoye-Aymeries in northern France, and Vincent Dollmann, the archbishop of Cambrai.1210
The distinction from Abu Falah matters. That attack occurred on 16 October and severely injured Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine. The Taybeh assault happened the following day, in another location, with a different set of victims. Levine’s injuries, and the burning trees and gunshots in our earlier report, do not belong to this incident.21423
The injured were not three diplomats
The Guardian reported three people injured in Taybeh: Baudoux, a Palestinian woman in her seventies and a Palestinian man. The woman was reportedly kicked and assaulted. The man was beaten and needed six stitches for a head wound. The two Palestinians’ identities and complete medical details have not been established in the available reporting. No death was reported in the Taybeh assault.2
Baudoux told the BBC that settlers kicked him, beat him with iron bars and threw him to the ground. The Guardian described him being knocked down as he tried to enter a vehicle with diplomatic plates. These accounts establish a reported assault, but they do not provide a fully reconstructed sequence showing each attacker’s actions.12
Dollmann and Baudoux’s wife were reportedly threatened; that does not establish that the archbishop was injured. Witness descriptions put the group at approximately seven masked assailants and describe quads, clubs and stones, vehicles being surrounded or pursued, and demands for identification. The precise assault site relative to the olive groves, and the complete progression of the confrontation, remain unclear. Belgian authorities confirmed the narrower, concrete detail that a consular vehicle’s window was smashed.1392
Participants identified the attackers as Israeli settlers. That identification does not rest solely on a caption attached to circulating footage: Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and the Israel Defense Forces themselves described an attack by Israeli rioters. But identifying a group is not the same as identifying named suspects or proving individual criminal responsibility. That is the work the police investigation still has to do.1105113
Harvesting olives, reporting the news or carrying out diplomatic duties should never put anyone at risk of attack.
Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot said his team was safe, confirmed that a French mayor had been assaulted and a Belgian vehicle damaged, and connected the visitors’ experience to Palestinian vulnerability. “Palestinians face this violence every day,” he said. He demanded protection for Palestinians, diplomats and journalists, and prosecution of those responsible.93
His proposed response goes beyond condemnation: Belgium will continue pressing for EU sanctions against those responsible and those who support them. He also linked the violence to Israel’s illegal settlement policy and condemned settlement expansion and attempts to forcibly displace Palestinians. Those are Belgium’s demands and policy positions—not an announcement that the EU has adopted new sanctions over Taybeh.493
An investigation and a competing message
Sa’ar said police had opened an investigation and forensic investigators were collecting evidence. His ministry was contacting the relevant ambassadors to help law enforcement identify the attackers. He also said the visit had not been coordinated with the Israeli military and argued that coordination could have helped protect the visitors. That is an official assertion about security arrangements, not a demonstrated explanation for the attack or a transfer of responsibility from assailants to victims.105
The military likewise condemned the violence and announced its own inquiry alongside the police investigation. It said soldiers would accompany police and forensic investigators collecting evidence and testimony. Its preliminary inquiry found that no soldiers were present at the scene when the attack happened; that remains a preliminary military finding, not an independently completed reconstruction.6113
The military also said a report had reached a brigade operations room designated for reports from security personnel, not civilians. It said other channels existed for civilian complaints and promised to examine all the circumstances. This explanation supplies no response timeline: it does not establish when help was first sought, how quickly anyone responded or whether a different reporting channel would have changed the outcome.113
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office struck a more sceptical note. While calling violence against diplomats unacceptable and confirming the investigation, it argued that footage and separate images of a smashed window and a person on the ground did not establish the complete sequence or individual responsibility. That evidentiary limitation is real. It does not cancel the military’s and foreign minister’s own acknowledgments of an attack.158
The office also raised concerns about a “coordinated campaign to smear Israel” and settlers during the olive harvest. Its statement supplied no evidence connecting such a campaign to this assault. Uncertainty about which individual did what is a reason to investigate carefully, not evidence that the reported attack was a fabrication.58143
The harvest beyond the diplomatic convoy
The wider figures describe the environment surrounding the visit, not additional casualties in Taybeh. Palestinian authorities, cited by the Guardian, put the harvest-period toll across the West Bank at at least four dead and more than 100 injured, with thousands of trees damaged. The account does not supply a complete case list or a precise starting date. None of those deaths was assigned to the diplomatic incident.2
The Israeli rights group Yesh Din’s dated monitoring offers another measure. From 27 September through 14 October, it recorded 486 incidents of settler and soldier violence, including 234 directly related to the olive harvest. Soldiers were documented present in at least 62 of those harvest-related incidents, or 26.5 percent. This is a broader category than settler attacks alone, and the monitoring period ended before Taybeh; it cannot establish soldier presence at Saturday’s assault.37
For farmers, blocked harvesting and stolen crops can mean losing the season’s produce. Destroyed trees also remove productive assets for future seasons. The diplomatic vehicle’s broken window made this incident an international issue, but the underlying stakes extend well beyond the convoy: whether Palestinians can work their land safely, and whether violence against them brings enforceable consequences.

- The attackers’ individual identities, the full sequence, complete medical details and the security-response timeline remain unresolved.

- Watch for identified suspects, arrests or charges, published investigative findings and a concrete EU sanctions decision. No timetable for those outcomes has been announced.
כפי ששודר
- Masked settlers attacked European diplomats and Palestinian olive harvesters.
- Three people were reportedly injured, including a French mayor, and a Belgian consular vehicle lost a window. Belgium is demanding European Union sanctions while Israeli police investigate.
- The unresolved test is whether investigators identify the attackers and bring them to justice.
- The delegation was attacked on October seventeenth in Taybeh, near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. A separate attack hit olive harvesters near Abu Falah the previous day, severely injuring photographer Heidi Levine. The victims and locations belong to two different incidents.
- Belgium's consul general in Jerusalem joined French and Polish diplomatic representatives and Catholic Church representatives on the Taybeh visit. They had come for olive-harvest activities in the largely Christian Palestinian village.
- French mayor Bernard Baudoux was there for a goodwill or twinning initiative involving his town, Aulnoye-Aymeries. The seventy-eight-year-old Communist mayor was accompanied by his wife. Archbishop Vincent Dollmann of Cambrai was also present.
- Baudoux said the attackers kicked him, beat him with iron bars and threw him to the ground. Another description places his fall as he tried to enter a vehicle with diplomatic plates. Images showed him slumped against a vehicle, wearing his French tricolour sash.
- The injured included Baudoux and a Palestinian woman in her seventies, who was reportedly kicked and assaulted. A Palestinian man needed six stitches for a head wound. Baudoux reportedly didn't need hospitalisation and continued parts of his visit.
- Dollmann and Baudoux's wife were reportedly threatened. Witness descriptions put the group at about seven masked assailants and describe quads, clubs and stones. Vehicles were surrounded or pursued, and the men demanded identification. Local priest Father Bashar Fawadleh was among those describing the confrontation.
- Participants identified the attackers as Israeli settlers. Israel's military and foreign minister also acknowledged that Israeli rioters attacked diplomatic representatives. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot confirmed the damaged vehicle and said his team was safe.
- Prévot wants EU sanctions against the attackers and those who support them. Belgium is pressing for that decision; the European Union hasn't announced new sanctions over Taybeh. He also demanded that Israel protect Palestinians, diplomats and journalists, and prosecute those responsible.
- Prévot said Palestinians face this violence every day, and that harvesting olives, reporting news or doing diplomatic work shouldn't expose anyone to attack. He linked the violence to Israel's illegal settlement policy. Belgium, he said, opposes settlement expansion and forced displacement, and wants the occupation to end.
- Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar condemned the violence and said forensic investigators were collecting evidence. His ministry contacted the relevant ambassadors to help identify the attackers. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office took a more sceptical position about the assault.
- Sa'ar also said the visit hadn't been coordinated with the Israeli military, and argued that coordination could have helped protect the visitors. The military made the same criticism. It opened its own inquiry alongside the police investigation and said soldiers would accompany investigators collecting evidence and testimony.
- The military said its preliminary inquiry found no soldiers at the scene when the attack happened. It also said a report reached a brigade operations room that accepts reports from security personnel, while civilians have other channels for complaints.
- The military said that room receives dozens of operational reports each day and responds only to authorised personnel. It promised to examine all the circumstances. It hasn't explained when help was first sought or how long a response took.
- Netanyahu's office called violence against diplomats unacceptable, but argued that the images couldn't prove the full sequence or each person's responsibility. It stressed the lack of military coordination and described the area as sensitive, with a history of confrontations.
- The office also highlighted Baudoux's Communist affiliation. It said he'd previously flown a Palestinian flag over his town hall and been ordered by French authorities to remove it. It raised concerns about a coordinated campaign to smear Israel and settlers during the harvest, without supplying evidence connecting such a campaign to this attack.
- Israel's own military and foreign minister had already acknowledged an attack by Israeli rioters. The police investigation still has to identify the individuals responsible.
- Palestinian authorities put the wider harvest-period toll at at least four dead and more than one hundred injured, with thousands of trees damaged. Those figures cover attacks across the West Bank. No death was reported in the Taybeh assault.
- Farmers can lose this season's olives when harvesting is blocked or crops are stolen. Destroyed trees also take away productive assets for future seasons.
- The Israeli rights group Yesh Din tracked both settler and soldier violence in the weeks before Taybeh. An earlier snapshot counted more than one hundred and seventy settler attacks since September twenty-seventh. Its larger updates cover a broader category of violence.
- From September twenty-seventh through October sixth, Yesh Din recorded one hundred and nine incidents across seventy-five Palestinian communities. Soldiers were documented at at least twenty-eight. The group's wording doesn't make clear whether every incident in that first tally was harvest-related.
- That update separately listed twenty-one physical assaults, twenty-four cases of harvest obstruction, seventy-five cases of crop theft and twenty-two cases of tree damage or destruction. Those categories can't be added into a new total because their overlap and counting units aren't clear.
- Through October tenth, Yesh Din recorded three hundred and seventy-seven incidents, including one hundred and seventy-four linked to harvesting. Through October fourteenth, the broader total reached four hundred and eighty-six, including two hundred and thirty-four harvest-related incidents.
- The two-week tally covered one hundred and sixty-two communities, averaging about twenty-seven incidents a day. Soldiers were present in twenty-five percent of its harvest-related cases. In the later update, soldiers were documented in at least sixty-two harvest-related incidents, or twenty-six point five percent.
- Both monitoring periods ended before the Taybeh attack. The military's preliminary account says soldiers weren't present at that assault.
- Police and forensic investigators are collecting evidence, but individual responsibility remains unresolved. Belgium is seeking sanctions against those responsible and their supporters. No date has been announced for investigative findings or a European sanctions decision.

- Read this figure again and again: an average of 10.9 incidents of settler and soldier violence every day. Today, we are publishing data that illustrate the scale of violence directly linked to the olive harvest: * 21 incidents of violence and physical assaults against olive harvesters * 24 incidents in which settlers or soldiers prevented olive harvesting * 75 incidents of crop theft * 22 incidents of damage to and destruction of olive trees * At least 28 incidents in which soldiers were documented as present In total: 109 incidents of settler and soldier violence across 75 Palestinian communities throughout the West Bank in just 10 days. More than 100 cases of violence against Palestinians documented by Yesh Din before the olive harvest season had even officially begun demonstrate that settler and military violence is not random. Rather, it is part of an Israeli policy with a clear objective: to prevent Palestinians from harvesting their olives, inflict economic harm on Palestinian...
- A Morning of Severe Violence Across the West Bank During the Olive Harvest. Yesh Din new data: 486 incidents of settler and soldier violence over 18 days, September 27- October 14, including 234 directly related to the olive harvest. Soldiers were documented as present in at least 62 incidents (26.5% of all incidents of violence directly related to the olive harvest). Video from the village of Turmusaya this morning shows one of the injured Palestinian farmers, a vehicle set on fire, and soldiers at the scene firing crowd-control weapons at Palestinian farmers. Footage credit: Turmusaya Municipality / Yesh Din
- Over the past two weeks (September 27 - October 10), Yesh Din collected documentation and reports of 377 incidents of settler and soldier violence against Palestinians. An average of approximately 27 incidents of violence per day, occurring in 162 Palestinian communities across the West Bank. Of these incidents, 174 were directly related to the olive harvest, and soldiers were present in 25% of them. The lack of law enforcement against violent settlers and soldiers who attack Palestinian olive harvesters, damage olive trees, and steal the harvest indicates that the obstruction of the olive harvest is part of a broader, systematic Israeli policy aimed at inflicting economic and cultural harm on Palestinians and displacing them from their land.

- Illegal Israeli settlers set fire to three vehicles and assaulted Palestinian olive harvesters in the occupied West Bank village of Turmus Ayya, leaving at least one person with a head injury. Settler violence has surged since the start of the annual olive harvest, with Israeli monitoring group Yesh Din recording more than 170 attacks since late September. - I strongly condemn the severe acts of violence by Israeli rioters in the area of Taybeh. A police investigation has been opened, and forensic investigators from the Judea and Samaria District are already at the scene collecting evidence. The Foreign Ministry is in contact with the ambassadors of the countries concerned in order to assist the law enforcement authorities, who are working to identify the attackers and bring them to justice. Without detracting from the severity of the incident, it is unfortunate that the visit was not coordinated with the IDF in advance. Such coordination could have helped safeguard the visitors’ security.
- This statement is a lie. For evidence, look at what IDF soldiers did this morning in the southern West Bank: they provided protection for a settler terror attack in which dozens of sheep were stolen and Palestinians were attacked with live fire.

Police forces and forensic investigators from the Judea and Samaria District are entering the area accompanied by IDF soldiers and will begin collecting findings and evidence, as well as taking testimonies, in support of an investigation that has been opened. The consulate's visit was not coordinated with the IDF. Such coordination is important to prevent incidents of this kind. According to a preliminary inquiry, no IDF soldiers were present at the scene at the time of the attack. - 🇵🇸 Israeli settlers carried out more than 200 attacks against Palestinians during the current olive harvest season in the occupied West Bank, surpassing the 185 recorded in the 2025 season, the UN said Thursday. Approximately 80% of incidents have occurred over the past two weeks. The attacks have killed at least four Palestinians since the harvest began, the Associated Press reported. More than 120 others have been wounded in the attacks, which have damaged over 2,500 olive trees and saplings. Israeli settlers attack Palestinian olive harvesters across other areas of the occupied West Bank, injuring three: 🔹 Nablus: Three Palestinians were injured after settlers assaulted them while harvesting olives in Asira Al-Qibliya on Friday, WAFA reported. - This year, too, the army and police are neglecting their duty to ensure that the olive harvest in the West Bank can take place safely and to protect Palestinian harvesters from settler attacks. In the first two weeks of October, Yesh Din field researchers documented 33 incidents of settler violence related to the olive harvest in the West Bank. These included violent assaults on Palestinian harvesters, threats and obstruction of harvesting, theft of olives and equipment, and the uprooting of hundreds of olive trees. In 11 of the incidents, soldiers or settlers wearing military uniforms were present at the scene - either standing idly by or actively assisting the attacking settlers. Four additional Incidents were documented in which soldiers prevented Palestinians from harvesting olives on their own land.
