Russian drone hits Kyiv apartment tower, killing at least two

At least two people were killed when a Russian drone struck a Kyiv apartment tower on the morning of October 21, 2026, setting a home ablaze high above the street. Two other people were hospitalized with injuries, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. For residents of the damaged building, another urgent question remained unanswered: when they could safely return.1
The drone hit at the 20th-floor level of a 24-story residential building in Sviatoshynskyi District. Emergency crews found two bodies while clearing the burned apartment, Interfax-Ukraine reported. Those were the two reported deaths, not an additional pair of fatalities. The people killed had not been publicly identified in the available accounts.27
The fire covered approximately 70 square meters, according to Interfax-Ukraine and New Voice. Parts of the apartment’s structures were destroyed. That describes serious damage within a home, but does not establish the condition of the entire tower or whether other apartments were safe to occupy.23
Kyiv’s air-raid alert sounded at around 5:20 a.m. local time as drones approached the capital, The Kyiv Independent reported. That was the warning time; the exact time the drone struck the building has not been established.1

In that initial account, carried by Ukrinform, Klitschko said emergency services were heading to the scene. Subsequent reporting on the recovery of the bodies established that crews had reached and were clearing the apartment. It did not establish that the wider search, evacuation or building-safety work had been completed.122
A toll revised through the morning
The casualty count rose as the morning’s reporting developed. Ukrainska Pravda’s earlier October 21 account listed one person killed and one injured. Later reports increased the death toll to two; New Voice cited an update from Kyiv’s military administration. The earlier one-death figure has been superseded, rather than remaining a competing current estimate.613
The injury picture is less settled. UNIAN and Novyny.live reported one injured person, while The Kyiv Independent’s later account relayed Klitschko’s statement that two people had been hospitalized. Two hospitalized is therefore the latest reported figure, but the change has not been independently reconciled. Neither their conditions nor a definitive final injury count was established in the available reporting.5151
The attack also left debris in two other districts. In Desnianskyi, debris fell on a car. In Solomianskyi, it landed in an open area and started a fire. Klitschko said no civilians were injured at either location. Those reports concern separate debris incidents—not the fatal tower strike in Sviatoshynskyi, and not three confirmed direct hits.1
Help now, but no return date
Sviatoshynskyi district opened an assistance headquarters at 109 Beresteiskyi Avenue for people affected by the attack, Glavcom reported on October 21. Residents seeking support have a reported location to turn to. The address is the assistance site; it has not been verified as the address of the struck tower.14
Opening a headquarters does not, by itself, answer the housing question. The available account does not say how many residents need temporary accommodation, what help has already been distributed, or when those displaced can go home. It also provides no completed structural assessment on which to base a return date.1412
The immediate losses are clear even while the emergency picture remains incomplete: at least two lives lost, two people reported hospitalized and an apartment burned near the top of a residential tower. Beyond the casualty updates, the next consequential information will be whether the building is safe and what provision exists for residents who cannot return. A support address is a practical first step; it is not yet an answer about where those residents can live.
