Five escape tugboat fire off Miyako Island; chief engineer dies
Tersedia dalam bahasa Inggris
By the evening, the emergency’s outcome had changed from five rescued and one missing to five survivors and one death. NHK’s update at 9:17 p.m. Japan Standard Time reported the chief engineer’s death. The earlier missing-person count, carried by outlets including Anadolu Ajansı, describes a stage of the response, not the latest known toll.351
From emergency call to helicopter rescue
The Coast Guard received the fire report at about 8:15 a.m. Japan time. The reported position was approximately 37 kilometres north of Ikema Island Lighthouse, in waters off Miyakojima City in Okinawa prefecture. Miyako Island lies in southern Japan.34
That morning’s first recorded time marks the call for help, not a confirmed start of the blaze. The distinction matters: the reporting establishes when authorities were alerted, but not how long the fire had already been burning.34
At about 9:30 a.m., the five men were located in a life raft roughly 300 metres east of the tug, according to Okinawa Daily. Local reporting separately places their recovery by Coast Guard helicopter shortly after 10 a.m. The raft’s discovery and the helicopter lift were successive stages of the rescue, rather than two accounts of one precise rescue time.363437
Later reporting placed him unconscious aboard the tug, in its engine room. His death was subsequently confirmed, but the available accounts do not establish a sufficiently reliable recovery time or the precise time and place of death confirmation. Finding him in the engine room does not, by itself, show that the fire began there.352
A voyage interrupted, questions still unresolved
Even the tug’s name remains unsettled across the reports. Okinawa Times, citing the Miyakojima Coast Guard Office, identified it as CEBU HOPE and gave its tonnage as 237 tons. Maritime Executive called it Cebu Maru and specified 237 gross tons. The accounts concern the same October 30 emergency, but the evidence does not resolve whether the names reflect a rename, another naming convention or a reporting error.3410
The central investigation is more consequential than the naming discrepancy. The fire’s cause remains under investigation, with no established explanation for how it started or what prevented the chief engineer from escaping with the others. The rescue brought five men safely away from the vessel; it leaves unanswered why the sixth could not follow.3510

- Five men escaped a burning tugboat, but its chief engineer died.
- Six Japanese men were aboard the vessel off southern Japan during a delivery voyage to the Philippines. The five survivors reached a life raft and were rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter.
- Investigators still have to determine what started the fire and what prevented the chief engineer from escaping with them.
- The chief engineer was initially missing. He was later found unconscious aboard the tug, and his death was confirmed by the evening. That changes the outcome to five survivors and one death.
- The fire was reported about 37 kilometres north of Ikema Island Lighthouse, in waters off Miyakojima City. Miyako Island lies in Okinawa prefecture, in southern Japan. The emergency happened on October thirtieth, twenty twenty-six.
- The tug had departed Hiroshima Prefecture and was being delivered or repositioned to the Philippines. The six men aboard were all Japanese. The fire interrupted that voyage in the waters north of Miyako Island.
- The Coast Guard received the fire report at about eight fifteen that morning. At about nine thirty, the five men were located in a life raft. A Coast Guard helicopter recovered them shortly after ten.
- Eight fifteen marks the emergency call. The fire may have started earlier. The raft sighting and the helicopter recovery were also separate stages of the response.
- The raft was found about 300 metres east of the tug. Three of the survivors were in their seventies, one was in his fifties, and one was in his forties. All five had no conspicuous injuries.
- None of those five men was in a life-threatening condition. The chief engineer was 65. He was found unconscious in the engine room, and was subsequently confirmed dead.
- The tug has been identified as both Cebu Hope and Cebu Maru. Cebu Hope is listed at 237 tons, and Cebu Maru at 237 gross tons. It's unclear whether the names reflect a rename or an error.
- The fire's cause remains under investigation. Investigators haven't explained how it began or why the chief engineer couldn't escape with the others.
