University of Minnesota invasive carp CT research

Inside the carp: Minnesota’s new scanner joins the search for a sound barrier

A new Bell Museum scanner could help researchers investigate sounds that deter invasive carp. Proving those sounds spare native fish—and keep working—is the harder task.

    • The installed scanner produces three-dimensional views of intact specimens, giving researchers a way to investigate internal anatomy without dissection.
    • No CT-derived sound has been shown to reliably repel the targeted carp while sparing native fish, and no dated milestone for such a test has been announced in the reported work.
    • Watch for evidence connecting a specific anatomical finding to hearing measurements, selective avoidance and a response that persists through repeated exposure.
