Two drivers killed in fiery Meckering truck crash; cause unresolved
Disponibile in inglese
What brought two trucks travelling in opposite directions into a head-on collision on Great Eastern Highway? That is the central question for investigators after two drivers, aged 56 and 33, died at Meckering in Western Australia on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. Both vehicles caught fire, and neither man survived the crash.12
Police have established which trucks the men were driving and where and approximately when they collided. They have not established publicly why the vehicles came into each other’s path. Officers from the Major Crash Investigation Section are examining the circumstances and asking witnesses—and anyone with relevant footage—to help fill that gap.2
The collision happened at about 6:45am Western Australian time on Great Eastern Highway near Quellington Road. Meckering is in the Wheatbelt, about 130 kilometres from Perth. ABC Western Australia described the crash as occurring at the intersection; the police release uses the broader wording “near Quellington Road”, leaving the precise point of impact within or beside the junction unestablished.12
The 56-year-old man was driving a white Volvo prime mover towing a semi-trailer. The 33-year-old man was driving a red-and-white Kenworth prime mover, also towing a semi-trailer. Police said the vehicles were travelling in opposite directions before the collision. Both men sustained critical injuries and died at the scene.2
Flames and wreckage across the highway
Firefighters arrived around 7am to find both trucks engulfed in flames, a Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson told ABC. Volunteer and career firefighters were sent to tackle the blaze. An emergency helicopter was also dispatched, alongside the ambulance response.1
Aerial images described by ABC showed charred, mangled wreckage strewn across the road as firefighters hosed it down. A large area of ground beside the highway was scorched. Police cars and fire trucks lined the road near the wreckage, while traffic banked up nearby.1
The broadcaster reported that the fire was understood to have been extinguished. That was a qualified account, unlike the firm police confirmation of the two deaths and the fire service’s description of both vehicles burning when crews arrived.1
What remains unresolved after the crash
The immediate consequence for other road users was a closure of Great Eastern Highway near Quellington Road. ABC’s November 4 report advised drivers to seek another route. A subsequent reopening time, precise closure boundaries and named diversion roads have not been established; that dated report should not be read as confirmation that the highway is still closed.1
For current travel decisions, Main Roads WA directs motorists to its Travel Map for closures, incidents, conditions and restrictions. That live-information service is the appropriate place to check before travelling, rather than relying on the crash-day closure account.11
The larger unresolved issue is the collision itself. Opposite-direction travel and a head-on impact do not identify which vehicle entered the other’s path or establish fault. The police account supplies no finding that speed, fatigue, impairment, distraction, a mechanical defect or road conditions caused the crash. The presence of fire likewise does not establish the medical cause of either death.12
Investigators are seeking information and images relating to the crash, including dashcam and mobile-phone footage. Anyone with relevant information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. The WA Police release also provides a direct upload channel for footage to reach investigators.2
For people affected by a road crash, Road Trauma Support WA is available on 1300 004 814. For the investigation, the distinction remains straightforward: two deaths are confirmed; an explanation for what brought the trucks together is not.2
