Catastrofi · Mallee crop damageMallee hailstorm crops: 400 hectares of canola hit as harvest stallsScritto 5 novembre 2026 alle ore 22:37 UTCTrascrizione0:07Hale battered four hundred hectares of canola on one farm just before harvest.0:12The grower fears losing well over half, while flooded access is postponing another0:17farmer's harvest.0:18How much can these growers salvage and can their machinery reach what's left?0:23Farmers near Birchip and at Lasells face damaged crops and disrupted harvest0:29plans.0:29Damage also stretches through districts, including Witcheproof and Kwambatuk.0:35Wheat, barley, lentils, canola, and lupins were among the crops hit as0:40grain and seed approached harvest.0:43Thousands of hectares are reportedly affected across Victoria's Maui, but damage0:48varies between paddocks.0:50At Dimosa, hail damaged a small corner of a barley crop.0:54On other properties, farmers describe seed pods stripped from plants and grain0:59knocked onto the ground, beyond the reach of harvesting machinery.1:03The hail struck on Monday afternoon, November second.1:07The Bureau of Meteorology warned of large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain in1:12parts of the Mali, northern country, and Wimera.1:15It cancelled the warning that evening.1:17Actual crop damage varied within that wider warning area near Burchip.1:22Lachlan Foote had already started harvesting.1:25He was shifting back to cut more canola when the storm arrived.1:28He says the heavy rain and hail passed over his property in about twenty minutes.1:33He estimated the front there was five to ten kilometers wide.1:37Foote says four hundred hectares of his canola were hit hard.1:41He estimates the loss could be well over fifty percent, but he'll only know how much1:46seed remains when a header, the harvesting machine Foote described hail about half1:51the size of a golf ball at his farm.1:54He said the front widened and intensified eastward, where he believed larger hail2:00fell.2:00His description points to changing conditions as the storm moved across farming2:05country.2:06The canola had been the best Foote had grown.2:09Afterwards, he said, It looks majority gone.2:12It just looks white.2:14His crop is insured, but he would rather have harvested it.2:17He says conservative estimates of expected yields can leave insurance cover below2:22what an exceptional crop might earn.2:24Insurance assessments will take time.2:27Foote's concern is that a policy based on cautious yield expectations can leave a2:31grower short after an unusually promising season.2:34Growers without crop insurance can't recover their losses through that cover.2:39Foote still intends to harvest the damaged paddocks, even if the machine collects2:43little seed.2:44He needs to clear the crop residue so he can sow through the land next year.2:49At La Salle's, Travis Horman faces a different starting point.2:53He was preparing to begin harvest within days.2:56Horman estimates Hale shredded up to seventy percent of his lupins.3:01His barley was riper than his wheat, and he says many barley heads were knocked off.3:06Flattened crops are also making the remaining harvest harder to collect.3:14Horman says some neighbors' lupin's suffered what he called one hundred percent3:18damage, leaving stalks with pods on the ground.3:22Before the storm, he'd expected the biggest season he'd seen.3:26He said his eighty-five-year-old father had never seen anything like its promise3:30either.3:30Gauges around Horman's farm recorded uneven rainfall of up to forty millimeters.3:36Alongside preparing his headers, he's been digging drains beside flooded roads and3:40gateways.3:41Water is blocking access he needs, and the storm has postponed his intended harvest3:46start.3:47Horman may have to store grain in bags in some paddocks if trucks can't get in.3:52What these farmers can salvage depends on reaching the crop and finding how much3:57grain remains.3:58Harvesting and insurance assessments will determine their losses.4:02There's no completion date for those assessments or final regional loss total.Leggi l’articoloCronologia della storiaHeyDex
