司法 · White House press accessDOJ Investigates Five TV Networks After They Refused to Replace CNN放送 2026年10月12日 0:41 UTCこのニュースRSSでフォロー文字起こし · 読み込み中0:09On September 27th, we reported restored press passes.0:12Now, five networks face an antitrust investigation.0:15Their refusal to replace CNN disrupted shared television coverage of presidential0:19events.0:20The government is now demanding communications about that cooperation.0:23Can the Justice Department prove that the network's response to CNN's exclusion0:27broke competition law?0:28The White House blocked CNN from assignments its competitors usually share.0:33Those competitors declined to step in.0:35Their decision put a shared news service at the center of a conflict over access to0:39the president.0:40The Justice Department announced the investigation on October 10th.0:43A day earlier, it sent civil investigative demands, formal requests for information,0:49seeking communications concerning the White House television pool.0:52The department hasn't announced charges, enforcement action, or a finding that the0:56networks broke the law.0:57ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, and Fox News are all under investigation.1:02The department is examining whether their coordination violated the Sherman Act, a1:06federal law against restraints on competition.1:09The disputed conduct involves their shared TV pool.1:12The networks take turns covering White House events through that pool.1:15When CNN's turn came and the administration denied it access, the other networks1:20agreed not to take over.1:22They made those decisions day to day.1:23For several days in September, that left gaps in the shared camera coverage and1:28footage.1:29The interruption affected a service used to bring presidential events to multiple1:33audiences.1:34Other reporting about Trump could still continue through other means.1:37The missing pooled coverage included an event involving Trump and Chinese President1:41Xi Jinping.1:42Its precise date hasn't been pinned down.1:44A separate dated exclusion involving Xi shows how reporters could regain credentials1:49and still lose access to an event.1:51The Justice Department says group boycotts among commercial competitors can violate1:54the Sherman Act.1:56Its theory turns on cooperation between businesses that compete for audiences.2:00Proving a violation would require evidence about what these networks agreed to do2:04and how that affected competition.2:06The network's decisions also concern how journalists gather news when one newsroom2:09is excluded.2:10Their status as commercial competitors doesn't, by itself, settle whether this2:14particular cooperation was unlawful.2:16The dispute puts competition law alongside questions about constitutional protection2:21for news gathering.2:22The department says its antitrust division is investigating to determine whether the2:26networks violated antitrust law.2:28That leaves the government's case at the evidence gathering stage.2:31Whether it can substantiate that case is still unresolved.2:34Trump announced an immediately effective ban on CNN, MS Now, and Politico on2:39September 18th.2:40The outlets sued.2:41Judge Timothy Kelly heard their arguments on September 23rd, then signed an order2:45temporarily restoring their hard passes on September 24th.2:48September 24th was the restoration date behind our September 27th report.2:53The initial protection reportedly lasted 14 days and covered 78 passes.2:58The relief was described as resting on due process, while leaving the First3:02Amendment dispute for later in the case.3:04CNN and MS Now journalists were blocked from a September 24 evening event with Xi at3:08the White House's North Portico, even after their credentials were restored.3:12It's unclear whether that was the same G event that lacked pooled coverage.3:15A hard pass permits entry to White House grounds.3:18Admission to particular events and travel assignments can still be restricted.3:22In our September 27th report, CNN's scheduled Air Force One slot had gone to Real3:27America's Voice.3:28Kelly's temporary order hadn't directly resolved those travel assignments.3:31Bruce Brown, a press freedom advocate associated with the Reporters Committee for3:35Freedom of the Press, called the investigation intimidating.3:38His concern centers on government scrutiny of newsrooms cooperating after the3:42administration excluded one of them.3:44A Cornell law scholar judged the network's conduct reasonable, subject to review.3:48Those competing assessments frame the conflict.3:51The department is pursuing a commercial boycott theory, while critics question the3:54use of federal investigative power against the network's response to an access ban.3:58The administration opposed the outlets' request for a preliminary injunction on4:02October 2nd.4:03The outlets made a further written effort to keep access, described on October 5th.4:08At an October 8th hearing, Kelly considered whether to block the ban for longer.4:12The outlets have regained credentials under temporary court protection and shared TV4:16coverage resumed.4:17Access to every event and travel assignment remains unsettled.4:21Meanwhile, the department still has to prove its competition law theory.4:24Its investigation hasn't produced a finding of unlawful conduct.4:27Access was reportedly extended until Tuesday, October 13th.4:31Kelly expected to decide by then whether to provide longer protection while the4:35lawsuit continues.4:37The Justice Department hasn't given a completion date for its separate investigation4:41into the networks.ショート動画誰が何を報じたか11 件の論点0 件は2社以上が確認8 件は1社のみ0
