Rybakina’s Finals exit opens a full group-stage chance for Kostyuk
영어로 제공
What changes when the defending champion leaves the WTA Finals before hitting a ball? For Elena Rybakina, the chance to finish an outstanding season with another title disappears, but her year-end number one ranking remains secure. For Marta Kostyuk, the withdrawal opens something more substantial than a substitute appearance: a full three-match opportunity in Group 1.32
Rybakina withdrew on Saturday, November 7, with a viral illness, a day before the 2026 tournament begins at Indian Wells, California. Kostyuk takes her place and will face Linda Noskova in Sunday’s opening match, with Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula her other round-robin opponents. The Finals run from November 8 through November 15.354
The distinction between the two prizes matters. Rybakina had already secured the year-end top ranking while competing in Tokyo. There is no last-minute opening for another player to take that achievement away. What the Finals lose is their reigning champion—and the possibility of seeing whether the season’s number one could defend her title against the rest of the field.3
A full opportunity for Kostyuk
For Noskova, the immediate consequence is a different opponent at short notice. The opener had been billed as Rybakina against Noskova; the November 7 withdrawal announcement supersedes that earlier pairing. Gauff and Pegula must also prepare to face Kostyuk rather than the defending champion. The group’s personnel have changed, but it would be premature to turn that fact into a prediction about who benefits most.643
Champion.com.ua lists Kostyuk’s opening match for 22:00 Kyiv time on November 8, equivalent to 20:00 UTC, although the precise hour has not been confirmed against an official order of play in the available reporting. The firm point is the replacement pairing: Kostyuk will open against Noskova. Her inclusion also puts her alongside Elina Svitolina in the singles field.23
Kostyuk therefore receives three separate chances to make an impression, not simply one match against the opponent Rybakina was due to meet first. That is the most consequential detail of the timing: the withdrawal comes late enough to disrupt preparations, but early enough to give the replacement a full group campaign.
An illness, not an injury diagnosis
Rybakina’s explanation was direct. She expressed sadness at withdrawing, acknowledged the season she had enjoyed and said she would stop competing to recover at home.3
I’ve had an incredible season but my body is just not physically ready to compete.
The WTA identifies a viral illness as the reason for this withdrawal. That should not be conflated with her previous exit in Tokyo, where she withdrew from an October 30 quarterfinal with a neck injury. Two withdrawals close together establish a difficult end to the season; they do not establish that the same condition caused both. No particular virus, severity assessment or recovery timetable has been disclosed in the available accounts.36
Tournament director Garbiñe Muguruza said she had spoken with Rybakina, who had been unable to recover in time after her late-season physical problems. The decision leaves the champion’s title defence over before its opening match, rather than asking her to test her readiness in competition.7
It is an abrupt ending to a season whose achievements are already substantial. Rybakina finishes with 54 wins and 14 losses and four titles: the Australian Open, Stuttgart, the US Open and Ningbo. Her two major victories added to the Wimbledon title she won in 2022, while runner-up finishes at Indian Wells and Toronto showed that her success extended beyond the events she won.31
Her US Open final victory over Aryna Sabalenka brought her to number one for the first time, ending Sabalenka’s 99-week hold on the ranking. The BBC reports that Rybakina led the tour with 438 aces, hit 1,775 winners and recorded ten victories over top-ten opponents. Those figures explain the scale of the absence without needing to treat the Finals as a verdict on her whole year.1
There was also a compelling title-defence story waiting to unfold. Rybakina won the 2025 Finals in Riyadh undefeated after being the last player to qualify; this year, she was the first singles qualifier. Another title would have made her the first back-to-back winner since Serena Williams in 2014. That opportunity is gone, not postponed.31
Her next competitive appearance is less certain. Rybakina said she would rest and recover at home before preparing for 2027, and told supporters she could not wait to return to Indian Wells in March. That is an intention to return, not a medical clearance or a confirmed date for her next match. For now, her season is complete—and Kostyuk’s Finals are about to begin.3

- A viral illness has knocked Elena Rybakina out of the WTA Finals.
- The defending champion leaves before her first match, and Marta Kostyuk takes her place. Rybakina has already secured the year-end number one ranking, so her withdrawal won't change who finishes on top.
- How does her exit change the opening match and Kostyuk's opportunity in the group?
- Indian Wells hosts these Finals, with the tournament running from November 8 through November 15. Rybakina withdrew on November 7, the day before play begins. Kostyuk is scheduled to face Linda Noskova in Sunday's opening match.
- Rybakina arrived as the champion after going undefeated at last year's Finals in Riyadh. She had been the last player to qualify for that tournament. This season, she qualified first. A successful defence would have made her the first back-to-back winner since Serena Williams in 2014.
- Rybakina said, “I've had an incredible season but my body is just not physically ready to compete.” She described feeling really sad about withdrawing and said she'd spend time resting and recovering at home before getting ready for the 2027 season.
- Her decision follows another late-season withdrawal in Tokyo. She had reached the quarterfinals there before pulling out with a neck injury. The WTA has identified a viral illness as the reason she's missing the Finals. Those are separate explanations for two withdrawals.
- Rybakina missed her Tokyo quarterfinal on October 30. Just over a week later, she withdrew from the Finals. Tournament director Garbiñe Muguruza said she'd spoken with Rybakina, who couldn't recover in time after her late-season physical problems.
- Rybakina's season ends with four titles, including two Grand Slams. She won the Australian Open and the US Open, adding to her first major at Wimbledon in 2022. Her other titles this year came in Stuttgart and Ningbo.
- She finishes with 54 wins and 14 losses. Those four titles helped carry her to number one for the first time. She also reached the finals at Indian Wells and Toronto, extending her success beyond the tournaments she won.
- At the US Open, she beat Aryna Sabalenka in the final and ended Sabalenka's 99-week hold on the top ranking. Rybakina then secured the year-end number one position while competing in Tokyo. That achievement was already settled before she withdrew from the Finals.
- Rybakina struck a tour-leading 438 aces this season, 140 more than Sabalenka. She also hit 1,775 winners. Against top-ten opponents, she recorded ten wins, the most on tour. At Grand Slams, she won 17 of her 19 matches.
- Kostyuk now inherits the place Rybakina leaves behind. The tournament lists her as its first alternate, the player available to step into the field. Because the change comes before Rybakina has played, Kostyuk can contest the full group programme.
- Kostyuk enters Group 1 as the first alternate. She opens against Noskova and also faces Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula. That gives her three group matches, with each opponent carrying a separate opportunity in the round-robin stage.
- The opening pairing has changed from Rybakina against Noskova to Kostyuk against Noskova. The match is listed for ten p.m. Kyiv time on November 8, though that precise hour still needs official confirmation. The confirmed change is the player taking the court opposite Noskova.
- Noskova gets a different opening opponent at short notice, while Gauff and Pegula also face the replacement entrant. Kostyuk's inclusion brings the Ukrainian singles presence to two players, alongside Elina Svitolina, who is also in the field.
- Rybakina wished the remaining players luck and said she couldn't wait to return to Indian Wells in March. That's her intention for a later visit. She hasn't set a date for her next competitive match; her immediate plan is to recover at home and prepare for 2027.
