Cultuur · Animal care costsMontreal animal shelter expects more than 10,000 admissions in 2026Uitgezonden 3 november 2026 om 00:19 UTCGeschreven 3 november 2026 om 00:35 UTCLees het artikelDit dossierTranscript · LADEN0:07Proanema has taken around eight thousand animals into its care since January.0:11The shelter expects more than ten zero admissions by the end of two thousand and0:14twenty six.0:15That's about twenty percent above Montreal's annual average over roughly the past0:18decade.0:19Proanema says household financial strain is contributing to the demand.0:23What's still unclear is how much of that increase comes from families who can no0:26longer afford their pets.0:28Most of the roughly eight zero animals admitted by late October were cats.0:32Proanema takes in animals found stray, animals abandoned by their owners, and pets0:36that people bring in to surrender.0:38Each kind of case contributes to the total.0:40So the admission count covers several routes into the shelter.0:43It can't tell us how many households gave up a pet because of veterinary bills.0:47Proanema also points to greater public awareness of its services.0:50More people knowing where to seek help can bring more animals through its doors.0:54Proanema's late.0:55October estimate put the expected year end total at about ten, four hundred animals.0:59The November forecast describes it more broadly as more than ten zero.1:03Both describe the same expected scale of demand.1:06With the final count still to come.1:08The twenty percent comparison uses the city's annual average over roughly a decade.1:11That gives the forecast some historical perspective.1:14But Proanima is also handling a changed service arrangement with responsibility1:18across the entire city for the first time this year.1:20Proanima took over animal services for all nineteen Montreal boroughs in January.1:24The citywide service was announced to begin January one.1:27Its center on Boulevard Pi, IX, serves that wider area, bringing the city's animal1:32care needs into one service network.1:34The center held a public event on May eight, several months after the citywide1:38service began.1:38It's in Villeray Saint-Michel Park Extension, in the north of Montreal.1:43The building gives the service a substantial physical base, while annual admissions1:47measure the flow of animals through its care.1:49Proanima lists the center's floor area as three six hundred twenty square meters or1:54about thirty-nine zero square feet.1:56How close it is to capacity depends on the space and care each animal needs.2:00Proanima hasn't given a current occupancy figure.2:03For a household, the pressure can arrive before an animal reaches the shelter.2:06Finding somewhere to live with a pet can be difficult.2:09Paying for treatment can create another obstacle.2:11Montreal's own guidance identifies veterinary costs and an animal's health among2:15reasons people give up pets.2:16Proanima was already handling admissions at or above expectations in July.2:20Executive Director Annie Kiriuwak described that pressure on July twenty-two, when2:25some people were surrendering pets unwillingly because they were having trouble2:28finding housing.2:29Kiriwak now warns that owners who can't afford veterinary treatment could surrender2:33more animals in poorer health over the coming year.2:35That would add care needs as well as admissions.2:37Her warning concerns what could happen next, and the year end intake total alone2:42won't show whether it happens.2:43Proanima also says wildlife interventions are more than twice the level of the2:47previous five years.2:48It hasn't explained whether that comparison uses a typical year, an annual average,2:53or the five years combined.2:54Wildlife work adds another demand on the service.2:57Financial pressure is one explanation Proanima gives for rising demand alongside3:01greater awareness of its services.3:02How much each contributes is still unclear.3:04The completed2020 six figures will test the intake forecast.3:08A breakdown of the cases and the animals' health when they arrive would show how3:12that demand is changing.Verkennen met HeyDexVolgen via RSS
