Salt Lake rescues its season, leaving the Galaxy one point short
Dostępne po angielsku
A season that included 13 straight MLS matches without a win has ended with Real Salt Lake back in the playoffs. Its 2–1 victory over the LA Galaxy on November 7, 2026, secured a sixth consecutive postseason berth—not because the long summer slump ceased to matter, but because Salt Lake recovered just enough to survive it.11
The margin was one point. Salt Lake finished ninth in the Western Conference with 45; the Galaxy finished 11th with 44 and no remaining route into the postseason. For Los Angeles, the defeat meant a second consecutive season outside the playoffs after its 2024 MLS Cup championship. For Salt Lake, it bought one more match: a single-game wild card at Seattle on November 19.316
That is the contrast this result leaves behind. Salt Lake salvaged a season that had threatened to slip away. The Galaxy could point to how close they came, but not to a performance that deserved a different ending.
Thirteen minutes, then a long hold
Before 20,738 fans at America First Field in Sandy, Utah, Salt Lake attacked the occasion immediately. Sergi Solans scored in the 10th minute, running onto Noel Caliskan’s curling through-ball, taking it around goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski and finishing into the exposed net. Caliskan and Philip Quinton received assists in the fuller scoring account. Three minutes later, Zach Booth collected a failed clearance following a corner and drove a right-footed finish into the bottom-right corner. His unassisted goal proved the winner.111
Booth’s contribution was particularly timely. The Eden, Utah native was making his first start since August 15 after returning from injury, replacing the ill Dominik Marczuk at right wingback. Kobi Henry also returned to the back line, Quinton moved centrally, Juan Manuel Sanabria played left wingback and Morgan Guilavogui came back from suspension. After losing 2–1 at San Jose the previous weekend, Salt Lake’s reshaped side began with urgency rather than caution.11
It could have made the evening much easier. Marcinkowski had already denied Luc de Fougerolles in the fifth minute. In the 21st, Saba Lobjanidze and Guilavogui combined to release Solans, who again rounded the goalkeeper, only for John Nelson to clear off the line. About ten minutes later, Guilavogui got around Marcinkowski himself and hit the right post. Salt Lake had repeatedly found a way through without finding the third goal.11
The cost of those misses became apparent in the 40th minute. After João Klauss’s pass, Hirving Lozano sent a low ball across from the right. De Fougerolles slid in and diverted it into his own net. The Galaxy had a foothold, and a game that might have been settled was instead balanced on a single goal.311
There was no second-half scoring, but there was a major Galaxy opportunity: Marco Reus missed an open-net chance after Klauss worked the ball beyond Salt Lake captain Rafael Cabral. Solans later sent a right-footed effort over the bar in the 68th minute. As chances became scarcer, Salt Lake protected what remained of its early advantage. The explosive opening had ultimately been enough.11
The goals themselves are established; some season totals attached to them are not. In their November 7 accounts, the Associated Press report carried by CBS Los Angeles called Solans’s opener his 14th league goal and Booth’s winner his first. Salt Lake’s club report called them their 15th and second MLS goals, respectively. Those tallies remain unreconciled, but there is no disagreement about who scored the two goals that secured this berth.111
The Galaxy’s problem was bigger
Galaxy coach Greg Vanney did not reduce the elimination to one missed chance or one bad night. “I feel like we all let the fans down,” he said afterward. His explanation linked the defeat to points dropped throughout the season—a necessary distinction when the final table makes every earlier draw or loss look newly consequential.3
Obviously, our standard is more than one point, but it was one point difference between being in and out.
Vanney said his attack began too spread out, leaving Klauss isolated against three centerbacks. He also faulted the failure to match Salt Lake’s intensity. “We just didn't get it done tonight, but again, it's not just about tonight,” he said. The early deficit was the immediate problem; the lack of room to absorb another poor result had been built over the season.3
Nelson’s account was similarly blunt. “We lost the ball way too many times in the first half,” the defender said, describing the space Salt Lake found through midfield. “They felt like they just kept coming at us and coming at us.” His goal-line clearance helped keep Los Angeles within reach, but it could not undo the two goals conceded before the match was 15 minutes old.3
Asked whether he wanted to continue playing for Vanney, Nelson answered, “100%. 100%. 100%.” That was an emphatic statement of support from a player, not an announcement about the coach’s future. What the result did settle was the Galaxy’s immediate future: their season was over.3
The rescue faces a road test
Salt Lake’s recovery deserves its due. After the 13-match winless stretch from July through September, Pablo Mastroeni’s team closed with five wins, two losses and a draw. That is 16 points from its final eight matches—enough to turn a prolonged slump into another postseason appearance. Qualification also secured entry into the August 2027 Leagues Cup.11
But the setting of the next match matters. Salt Lake finished its MLS home schedule with ten wins, three losses and four draws. Subtracting that from its complete 13–15–6 regular-season record produces an away record of three wins, 12 losses and two draws: 11 points on the road, against 34 at home. That calculation captures the challenge more sharply than the playoff streak does.113
There is a reporting wrinkle behind those figures. Salt Lake’s own report opens with a 13–14–6 record, which accounts for only 33 matches. The Galaxy’s report and CBS/AP give 13–15–6, a complete 34-match record. Both versions yield 45 points, so the discrepancy does not alter the qualification margin; the road calculation uses the complete record.1131
The winner advances to a best-of-three first-round series against top-seeded Vancouver Whitecaps; the loser is eliminated. Salt Lake has earned the opportunity, not passage through it. Its late recovery and fast start against the Galaxy rescued the season. Extending it now requires getting past Seattle, away from the home ground where most of its points were won.161

- Real Salt Lake scored twice in thirteen minutes and ended the Galaxy's season. The 2–1 victory secured the Western Conference's ninth and final postseason berth. Los Angeles has now missed two straight postseasons after winning the 2024 MLS Cup. Whether Salt Lake's late recovery can carry it further now comes down to one away match in Seattle.
- At America First Field in Sandy, Utah, 20,738 fans watched Salt Lake protect a lead that nearly disappeared. Sergi Solans and Zach Booth supplied the goals on November seventh. A first-half own goal brought the Galaxy back within reach.
- Salt Lake finished with thirteen wins, fifteen losses and six draws. The Galaxy finished with eleven wins, twelve losses and eleven draws. Those records left the clubs two places apart in the standings, but separated by the smallest possible points margin.
- Salt Lake took the last berth with 45 points. The Galaxy ended with 44. That one-point difference leaves Los Angeles without another route into this postseason, while Salt Lake gets a single-game wild card against the eighth-seeded Seattle Sounders.
- Solans struck in the tenth minute, running onto Noel Caliskan's curling through-ball and taking it around goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski. Philip Quinton also earned an assist. In the thirteenth minute, Booth punished a failed clearance after a corner, finishing right-footed into the bottom-right corner.
- Booth's unassisted goal decided the match. The Eden, Utah native was making his first start since August fifteenth after returning from injury. He replaced the ill Dominik Marczuk at right wingback. Kobi Henry returned to the back line, Quinton moved centrally, and Juan Manuel Sanabria played left wingback. Morgan Guilavogui also returned from suspension.
- Salt Lake had lost 2–1 at San Jose the previous weekend. With its season at stake, the reshaped lineup attacked immediately. Booth's return gave the home side its decisive contribution, and Salt Lake kept creating chances to stretch the lead.
- Marcinkowski had already denied Luc de Fougerolles in the fifth minute. In the twenty-first, Saba Lobjanidze and Guilavogui combined to release Solans again. He rounded the goalkeeper, but John Nelson cleared off the line. About ten minutes later, Guilavogui got around Marcinkowski himself and hit the right post. Salt Lake's missed chances left the Galaxy an opening.
- Hirving Lozano drove a low ball across from the right after João Klauss's pass. De Fougerolles slid in and diverted it into his own net in the fortieth minute. Guilavogui and Stijn Spierings threatened again before halftime, but Salt Lake's cushion was down to one.
- Marco Reus later missed an open-net chance after Klauss worked the ball beyond Salt Lake captain Rafael Cabral. Solans sent a right-footed attempt over the bar in the sixty-eighth minute. Neither side scored after halftime, and opportunities became scarcer as Salt Lake held on. Cabral finished with one save; Marcinkowski made six.
- Galaxy coach Greg Vanney said, “I feel like we all let the fans down.” He tied the elimination to points dropped throughout the season. The final one-point gap captured the cost, even as he made clear the club expected much more.
- Vanney said his attack began too spread out, leaving Klauss isolated against three centerbacks. He also faulted his team's failure to match Salt Lake's intensity. “We just didn't get it done tonight, but again, it's not just about tonight,” he said. The Galaxy had given themselves more work before this final match began.
- Nelson blamed repeated first-half giveaways and the space Salt Lake found through midfield. “They felt like they just kept coming at us and coming at us,” he said. Asked whether he wanted to keep playing for Vanney, Nelson answered, “100%. 100%. 100%.”
- Joseph Paintsil passed one hundred appearances for the Galaxy across all competitions with his start. Former Salt Lake midfielder Pablo Ruiz returned to America First Field as a Galaxy player for the first time. Both milestones came on a night that ended their team's season.
- Salt Lake endured thirteen straight MLS matches without a win from July through September. It then closed with five wins, two losses and a draw. Under Pablo Mastroeni, that recovery delivered a sixth consecutive playoff berth and entry into August's 2027 Leagues Cup.
- Salt Lake has reached the postseason in eight of the past nine seasons and sixteen of its nineteen MLS campaigns. Mastroeni's team has repeatedly responded after losses. Across his five-plus seasons in charge, Salt Lake has recorded thirty-eight wins and nineteen draws in matches immediately following a defeat.
- Salt Lake finished its MLS home schedule with ten wins, three losses and four draws. Across all competitions in Utah, it had thirteen wins, four losses and four draws. Mastroeni's Decision Day record now stands at five wins and a draw.
- Scoring first has also been a strength during Mastroeni's tenure. Salt Lake has won sixty, lost twelve and drawn twenty-three of those matches. Against the Galaxy, the early advantage survived missed chances and an own goal. The next test takes Salt Lake away from the home crowd that helped mark this escape.
- Seattle will host the wild card at Lumen Field on Thursday, November nineteenth. Kickoff is scheduled for seven p.m. Pacific, and Apple TV will carry the match. The announced date and time remain subject to scheduling changes.
- Ninth-seeded Salt Lake must beat eighth-seeded Seattle to reach the first round. The road match gives both clubs one chance to continue. For Salt Lake, a season rescued by its closing run now depends on converting that recovery into another win.
- The wild-card winner advances to a best-of-three first-round series against the top-seeded Vancouver Whitecaps. The loser is eliminated. Salt Lake has secured its postseason place, but reaching Vancouver still requires a win against the Sounders in Seattle.
