Ciência · Orangutan rescueBatu Nyambu orangutan release: Nine fire survivors return to protected forestExibido 30 de outubro de 2026 às 12:04 UTCEscrito 30 de outubro de 2026 às 12:18 UTCLer a versão em textoEsta coberturaTranscrição · CARREGANDO0:07Nine fire.0:08Rescued orangutans have climbed back into the forest canopy.0:11The group includes mothers with dependent young and three pregnant females.0:15For these critically endangered animals, the move brings a chance to live in0:18protected habitat.0:20What did it take to get them back into the wild?0:22Conservationists opened the transport cages in Batu Nyambu Forest on0:26October29,2026.0:28The protected area covers twenty-three zero hectares in West Kalimantan, Indonesia.0:33They chose it for its largely undisturbed habitat and abundant food.0:36The orangutans had been rescued in August and September from an oil palm plantation0:40in Ketapang.0:42Fires had swept through their habitat, leaving some animals injured and others badly0:46depleted.0:47Carmela Lano Sanchez, head of the Waiari Wildlife Rehabilitation Foundation, said0:51some animals had burns on their hands and feet.0:54Others were severely underweight and malnourished.0:56They needed treatment and time to recover before they could make the journey.0:59The nine spent four to eight weeks recovering at a rehabilitation center in1:02Ketapong.1:03Their return to the forest followed that period of care.1:06With final veterinary examinations revealing more about the families making the1:09trip.1:10Four mothers had their young with them.1:11During the final veterinary checks, staff also discovered that three of those1:15mothers were pregnant.1:16Those pregnancies don't add to the nine animals counted in the release.1:19Conservationists moved the animals by vehicle, then boat, then on foot.1:23They carried heavy transport cages through steep, slippery forest terrain to reach1:27the release site.1:28Once the doors opened, the orangutans climbed nearby trees and disappeared into the1:32canopy.1:38The destination offered food and relatively undisturbed forest after weeks in1:42rehabilitation.1:43But the nine animals represent only part of a much wider rescue effort across fire,1:47affected areas of West Kalimantan.1:49A regional tally counted fifty, one orangutans rescued between August six and1:53October ten in Ketapong and North Keong.1:55Indonesia's forestry ministry put the wider count at at least fifty, one since early2:00August.2:00That's a cumulative rescue total.2:02It doesn't tell us how many have returned to the wild.2:04Nusantara Atlas estimates that more than one point nine million hectares burned2:08across Indonesia during the first nine months of two thousand and twenty-six.2:11That figure covers land nationwide.2:13Extending beyond orangutan habitat, it measures a different scale of destruction2:18from the forest receiving these animals.2:20These nine have completed the journey from rescue through rehabilitation to2:23protected forest.2:24How they're faring since release, including the outcome of the three pregnancies,2:28isn't yet known.Explorar com o HeyDexSeguir por RSS
