ConflictKyiv Missile Barrage Kills 17 as Patriot Stocks Run DryAired August 23, 2026 at 5:53 PM UTCWritten September 7, 2026 at 9:22 PM UTCRead the write-upThis storyTranscript · LOADING0:00Upper floors of a Kyiv apartment block0:02vanished overnight.0:05That was one building out of about 300:07hit in 8 hours as 168 drones and dozens0:10of missiles blanketed the capital and0:1238,000 people sheltered in subway0:14stations below. The weapon built to stop0:16the fastest missiles is almost gone. Can0:18Ukraine buy enough interceptors before0:20the next barrage arrives in minutes, not0:22hours? The attack came the night of0:24August 19th into 20, [music] focused on0:26Kyiv city and Kyiv Oblast. The early0:29morning Air Force tally listed ballistic0:30[music] trajectory missiles, Onix,0:32Zircon, Iskander M and S-400 types with0:35numbers withheld plus 36 KH-101,0:38Iskander K and KH-59 cruise and0:40air-launched missiles,0:41>> [music]0:41>> eight caliber cruise missiles, two0:43Bandera loitering munitions, and 1680:45Shahed type strike drones together with0:47Geran and Parodya decoys. [music] Nearly0:49half of the Shaheds jet-powered. Layered0:51defenses, aircraft, anti-aircraft0:53missile forces, electronic [music]0:55warfare, unmanned systems, and mobile0:57fire groups across north, south, east,0:59and central Ukraine shot down or1:01suppressed 186 aerial targets in total.1:04That was 145 [music]1:05drones, 31 of 36 KH-101 class cruise1:08missiles, all eight calibers, and both1:10Bandera. More than 90% [music]1:12against cruise and drones. Results for1:14the ballistics were withheld and recent1:16waves have seen near zero ballistic1:18interceptions. [music]1:19Hits were still recorded at 28 locations1:21with falling debris at two more during1:23an air raid alert that lasted eight to1:25nine hours in Kyiv. [music] The worst1:27hit was that nine-story residential1:29building in Solomiansky. Its upper1:31floors destroyed with multiple deaths1:32inside. [music]1:33About 30 residential buildings were1:35damaged along with a children's hospital1:37and kindergarten, a school, warehouses,1:39railway, and industrial and fuel1:41infrastructure.1:42Gas infrastructure was hit in Chernihiv.1:44[music]1:45A border crossing with Moldova was hit1:47in Odessa. And strikes or shelling1:49activity were reported in Zhytomyr,1:51Kherson, [music]1:52Kharkiv, and Donetsk. Beyond Ukraine, a1:55drone crash and a naval drone near a gas1:57platform [music] were reported in1:58Romania, and an airspace violation and2:01drone downing in Moldova. The human toll2:03is centered in Kyiv, but extends beyond2:05it, [music] and the numbers shifted2:07through the day as rubble was searched2:08and the broader region was counted.2:10[music] That evolution is the caveat.2:12The city administration moved from five2:14dead to 12. Other verified [music]2:15counts converged around 15 to 17 dead2:18with 33 to 42 injured in the city. The2:20UN humanitarian office counted at least2:22a dozen killed and nearly 50 injured in2:24the broader region. And national [music]2:2624-hour totals rose higher when later2:28drones were included. More than 38,0002:30people, including more than 2,0002:32children, waited it out in Kyiv subway2:35stations2:35>> [music]2:36>> for 8 hours. Extended early warning on2:38Telegram from the Air Force and2:39monitoring channels tracked incoming2:41trajectories and directed civilians2:43[music] to shelters. The gap is not2:44abstract. One launcher near Kyiv sat2:47silent for 6 weeks, and a chief engineer2:49reported the unit's first [music]2:51complete depletion back in December.2:53With fewer interceptors arriving and2:54more ballistics incoming, [music]2:56recent ballistic interception has fallen2:57to near zero, while cruise and drone2:59interception stays high. [music] That3:01split explains why this wave looks3:03successful against cruise and drones,3:04yet still killed in apartment blocks.3:06The political [music] ask is direct.3:08President Zelensky called this one of3:10the most cynical and large-scale strikes3:12of the [music] war and said the lack of3:14Patriot interceptors is directly linked3:16to the loss of life.3:17He asked partners, above all the United3:19States, to enable purchase of hundreds3:21more, saying Ukraine will buy them.3:23>> [music]3:23>> European Commission President von der3:25Leyen answered that anti-ballistic3:26defense is the most urgent priority and3:29work continues [music] with member3:30states, but no specific quantities or3:32delivery timelines were confirmed, and3:34[music] no precise remaining inventory3:35has been publicly confirmed for security3:37reasons. The math underneath is3:39production versus consumption. About 6203:42interceptors [music]3:43were produced in all of 2025, about 1.73:46a day, while coalition forces in the3:48Persian Gulf consumed an average [music]3:49of 225 a day over a 4-day stretch in3:52March and April. That is a 132 to 13:55ratio. Independent [music] estimates put3:57United States PAC-3 MSE stocks falling4:00from about 2,200 [music] to 2,300 down4:03to about 760 to 830 by mid to late 20264:06[music] with that also heavily drawn4:08down and European spares limited. Plans4:10to reach about 2,000 a year by about4:122,030 [music] do not cover this winter4:14and ideas for licensed or domestic4:16production in Ukraine face 1 [music] to4:175 plus years. The Russian Defense4:19Ministry said it struck military4:21facilities, transport and logistics,4:23warehouses and drone component4:24production [music] in Kyiv and the4:26broader region and claimed successful4:27hits. With stocks prioritized target by4:30target and nearly depleted current4:31holdings cannot sustain robust defense4:33[music] against repeated barrages of4:35this size, 168 drones plus dozens of4:38cruise and ballistic missiles, hours in4:40a subway saved lives [music] this time.4:42But no shelter replaces an interceptor4:44when a ballistic warhead arrives in4:45minutes. And unless hundreds of4:47additional interceptors move quickly,4:49the same pattern of high cruise and4:50drone stops alongside near zero4:52ballistic stops will leave homes,4:53hospitals, schools and energy sites4:55exposed through the winter.4:57Like and follow for more stories that4:58matter.Explore with HeyDexThe shortThe short ↗
