A0:12major new study from the Center [music]0:14for Strategic and International Studies,0:16released today, has tallied the full0:19ledger of this war. More than 2 million0:21soldiers have now been killed or wounded0:23since Russia's full-scale invasion began0:26in [music] February 2022.0:29On the Russian side, CSIS estimates0:32between 400,000 and [music] 450,0000:35fatalities.0:37On the Ukrainian side, [music]0:38fatalities are estimated at 125,0000:42to 150,000.0:44To put that in perspective, Russian0:46fatalities in Ukraine are now more than0:48four times [music] all American combat0:50deaths since World War II combined.0:54The report's conclusion is stark.0:56>> [music]0:56>> This war's human toll has no modern0:59parallel.1:00The BBC [music] and the independent1:02Russian outlet Mediazona have confirmed1:05the names of nearly 228,0001:07Russian soldiers killed, [music] and1:09that is just the verifiable floor. The1:12true toll is almost certainly far1:13higher. And the killing [music] is not1:16slowing down.1:17In the first half of 2026,1:20Russia has been losing between 30,0001:22and 34,000 troops a month,1:25>> [music]1:25>> faster than it can recruit, which sits1:27at roughly 27,000 a month. The ratio of1:31Russian to Ukrainian casualties, which1:33[music] ran roughly two or three to one1:35for most of the war, has now spiked to1:37roughly eight [music] to one, driven by1:39Ukraine's increasingly effective drone1:41and artillery campaign.1:43But the military death toll is only one1:45dimension of the crisis. [music]1:47Behind it sits a demographic hollowing1:49out that will shape both countries for1:51decades.1:52On both sides of the border, the numbers1:55tell the same story. [music]1:56A generation is being hollowed out.1:59Between 650,000 and 1 million Russians,2:02disproportionately [music]2:03young and educated, have emigrated since2:06the invasion began.2:08The Carnegie Endowment for International2:10Peace warns that collapse of Russia's2:12social security [music] system is, in2:14its words, a very real prospect. Here is2:17the thing about casualty figures in a2:19war like this. They are [music]2:20abstractions until they are not. The 232:24missiles that hit Kyiv this morning were2:25aimed at apartment buildings, at people2:28in their beds. The nearly 228,0002:29[music]2:31Russian dead whose names have been2:32confirmed, each one was someone's child,2:35[music] someone's parent.2:37President Zelenskyy, heading into the2:39NATO summit in Ankara this week, will2:41[music] ask allies for the air defense2:43systems that might have stopped this2:45morning's attack. [music] President2:47Putin, in his public statements, has not2:49acknowledged the suffering of [music]2:50his own people.2:52The deeper question the CSIS report2:54forces is this: After more than years2:57and 2 million casualties, what exactly2:59is the path out? And how many more names3:02will be added to the ledger before3:03anyone finds it?Explore with HeyDex
