And a 7.50:12billion plan covering 517 mi of border0:15is under review for a redesign. Will0:17that pause inside the park become0:19permanent or just a smaller footprint0:21with different tools? The halt is0:22focused and temporary. The $ 1.7 billion0:26contract for [music] the segment called0:27Big Bend 4 is paused inside the park.0:30While the full Big Ben sector, valued at0:32about $7.5 billion, is under an about0:35two week [music] review to consider0:36redesign options. The park itself is a0:38small slice of a huge line. 118 mi of0:42border run through Big Ben National0:43Park, [music] about 6% of the nearly0:452,000 mi of southern border, and about0:4823% of the 517 [music]0:50mi sector that federal planners divided0:52for construction. This was never one0:54continuous wall. The May 2026 contract0:56to Southwest Valley Constructors [music]0:58for Big Bend 4 covered lowprofile1:00vehicle barriers, patrol roads, and1:02detection technology in and near the1:03park. The original park scope was about1:0617 mi of non-ontiguous low [music]1:08barriers plus 200 to 205 mi of patrol1:11roads up to 24 ft wide with sensors.1:13Outside the [music] park, the plan looks1:15different. About 175 mi of 30ft steel1:18ballard wall are planned west of the1:20park in Hudspath.1:21>> [music]1:22>> Jeff Davis and Prescidio counties in1:24segments Big Bend 1 through three1:26awarded to firms including Barnard and1:27Fischer sand and gravel and about1:29[music] 157 to 165 miles of vehicle1:32barriers plus roads and technology to1:34the east through Brewster, Terrell, and1:36Valverde counties. The fight centers on1:38how little traffic crosses here. The1:41sector recorded 3,96 apprehensions and1:43encounters in fiscal year 2025, [music]1:46down 74% from 11,823 in fiscal year1:502023. that 396 is about 1.3% of the1:54southwest border total of about 237,5381:57commonly described as about 1% [music]1:59and averages to about 8 and a half per2:01day. Recent estimates put it at 5 to six2:03per day. The park's own share is even2:05smaller about 0.045%2:08of the national total. Opponents cite2:10the numbers to question billions in2:11rugged desert. The counterargument2:13points to multi-year totals seizures and2:15the risk that roads shift if enforcement2:17moves. [music] There is a direct2:18contradiction over what was actually2:20being built. The correction on August2:2213th made clear the work was survey and2:24design, not a 30-foot wall through the2:26park with a plan for one new access2:27road, [music] improving existing roads,2:30detection technology, and limited2:31barriers in strategic flats. Before that2:33clarification, video showed heavy2:35equipment clearing and regrading near2:37Santa Elena Canyon, which opponents say2:39already fragmented habitat in a2:41designated wild and scenic corridor. To2:43expedite [music] the work, 292:45environmental and historic preservation2:47laws were waved in June and July under2:48the illegal immigration reform and2:50[music] immigrant responsibility act and2:51the Real ID Act, including the National2:53Environmental Policy Act, Endangered2:55[music] Species Act, and Clean Water2:57Act. It was the third waiver for the2:59area in 2026. [music] The sequence moved3:01fast. The May award was followed by3:03waiverss and clearing, then a3:05correction, then [music] a halt. All3:07construction inside the park was paused3:08beginning late August 16th to early3:10August 17th for a personal on the ground3:12evaluation and meetings with sheriffs,3:14county judges, and local stakeholders3:16with a review described as lasting at3:17least about 2 [music] weeks from around3:19August 18th to 19. Crews stopped and3:21equipment was staged but inactive.3:23[music]3:24Work outside the park was not paused and3:26sectorwide contracts extend into 20273:29and 2028. [music]3:30Two legal tracks are running at once.3:32The indigenous nonprofit Peoples of3:34Lahonta for preservation associated with3:36the leap and Apache community and3:38founded [music] in 2024 filed August3:4014th in the Western District of Texas as3:43case 526 CV052453:46seeking a temporary restraining order3:48under the Religious Freedom Restoration3:49Act over harm to archaeological and3:51religious sites. A motion followed on3:53August 16th. [music]3:55A hearing is set for August 28th and as3:57of August 21, no injunction had been3:59granted. [music] A separate challenge to4:01the waiverss argues no administration4:03had previously waved laws in a national4:05park like Big Bend.4:12The push back is local and spans party4:14lines. The ranchers phrase [music]4:16captures it about protecting land, not4:18politics. More than 140 local4:21businesses, recreation groups, and4:23outfitters [music]4:23signed an August 4th letter to senators4:26and the governor to protect the tourism4:27economy. A bipartisan group of about 404:30to 46 Texas [music] House lawmakers4:32urged a stop. All Democratic members of4:34the Texas congressional delegation4:36opposed [music] and a senator sought4:38stakeholder meetings before more park4:40work. Seven former Big Ben4:42superintendent, [music] the National4:43Parks Conservation Association, and the4:45No Big Bend Wall Coalition speaking for4:48132 organizations also opposed. Terrell4:51Countyy's Sheriff, [music] a 26-year4:53Border Patrol veteran who favors4:55technology and existing roads, met with4:57leadership during the review. [music]4:58The CBP commissioner says the pauses for5:00listening and terrain evaluation with5:02options under discussion including5:04scaling back or eliminating new patrol5:06roads in favor of improving existing5:08ones, limiting four to sixt vehicle5:10barriers to flat accessible crossings,5:12and relying more on cameras, [music]5:13sensors, autonomous towers, and drones5:15while leveraging natural barriers. The5:18governor says he spoke with the DHS5:19secretary and has assurances no physical5:22infrastructure, no wall or fence will be5:24built inside the park and [music] that5:25other tools would be used. Those5:27asurances have been reported as verbal5:29and political commitments, not a formal5:31signed agreement, regulation change, or5:33binding legal instrument, though the5:35agency has independently reiterated no5:37traditional wall for the park interior.5:39[music] The argument on the ground is5:40geography. Canyons and cliffs rise5:43hundreds to [music] more than 1,000 feet5:45at Santa Elena Canyon and remote desert5:47mountains described as God's [music]5:49walls are cited as natural deterrence to5:51large groups and vehicles. Opponents say5:53miles of new roads fragment [music]5:55habitat affect dark skies and river5:57access. While faster response on5:59existing roads and real-time awareness6:01from [music] technology would do more.6:03The pause stops bulldozers inside Big6:05Ben National Park for now. It does not6:07stop the sector outside the park where6:09[music] ranchers fear eminent domain and6:11road cuts across private land and where6:13outfitters and gateway [music]6:14communities depend on uninterrupted6:16river access, trails, and night skies.6:18The redesign is not published. [music]6:20The August 28th hearing has not yet6:22decided a restraining order. The6:23asurances of no wall in the park are not6:25formalized, and the final cost, mileage,6:27[music] and footprint for the $7.56:29billion, 517 mile sector outside the6:32park remain undetermined while contracts6:35run into 2027 and 2028, and work there6:38continues.6:39Like and follow for more stories that6:41matter.Explore with HeyDexThe shortThe short ↗
