Every northbound lane of I-85 near Atlanta’s Buford Highway was still listed as blocked at 12:29 a.m. Friday—after firefighters had brought the fire beneath the interstate under control. The flames had been contained; an actual reopening of the highway had not been confirmed.23

The fire burned beneath I-85 near the Buford Highway Connector and Cheshire Bridge Road late Thursday, October 29. WSB-TV reported smoke around the roadway, fire engines at the scene and signs warning of a lane closure. Atlanta Fire Rescue described the incident as a large outdoor fire; the Georgia Department of Transportation identified it as a brush fire.3

The disruption reached beyond northbound interstate traffic. Both directions of I-85 were temporarily shut down, as were portions of Buford Highway near Cheshire Bridge Road, while crews extinguished the blaze and worked to ensure roadway safety. The later traffic update specifically concerned the northbound lanes; a separate southbound reopening time was not established.3

Atlanta News First’s initial report, published at 11:45 p.m. Thursday, cited GDOT for the closure of all northbound lanes near Buford Highway. That report establishes the earlier shutdown, not an indefinite continuation of it. The latest located traffic entry extended the documented northbound blockage into Friday morning, with its 12:29 a.m. update.12

Those times describe different parts of the emergency. Atlanta Fire Rescue’s response began about half an hour before containment, according to the department’s account reported by WSB-TV. The 11:38 p.m. traffic timestamp falls between them. It should not be read as the moment the fire started, or as evidence that firefighters arrived only then. All times here are local Eastern Daylight Time.23

No confirmed time for reopening

The traffic record also contained an “End Time” of 1:38 a.m. Friday. That field was not explicitly labeled an estimate in the retrieved entry. Nor did it establish that traffic actually resumed at that hour. At the 1 a.m. status check, the listed time was still in the future and the latest located lane update remained the one from 12:29 a.m.2

For drivers, that distinction matters more than the apparent precision of the clock. A time in a traffic record is not, by itself, clearance to use the road. The available entry gave neither a confirmed reopening nor an assurance that the lanes would be ready to carry traffic at 1:38 a.m.2

Direct checks of the public traffic pages did not independently establish live lane conditions. The 511 Georgia alerts page displayed no alerts, but it provided no incident-specific statement that this closure had ended. An empty alerts page cannot substitute for a timestamped reopening notice. Whether every northbound lane remained closed at 1 a.m. was therefore unverified.3652

The location descriptions point to the same affected corridor: I-85 at State Route 13, also known as Buford Highway, near the connector and Cheshire Bridge Road. But the documented temporary closures should not be flattened into one continuous, identical shutdown across every road. The northbound update does not establish how long the southbound lanes or the affected portions of Buford Highway stayed closed.13

No injury assessment or confirmed injury count was available in the incident reports. That is a gap in the information, not a finding that nobody was hurt. Likewise, the reports supplied no inspection findings establishing whether I-85 or other property sustained damage. Neither damage nor an absence of damage had been confirmed.13

The cause and ignition time also remained unconfirmed. “Brush fire” and “outdoor fire” describe the reported incident; they do not explain what started it. The firm outcome was containment. The consequential question still awaiting an explicit answer was when the affected lanes could safely carry traffic again.23

  1. A fire beneath I-85 shut down every northbound lane.
  2. The disruption also temporarily stopped southbound traffic and closed parts of the road below. Firefighters got the blaze under control, but drivers still faced an unresolved question: when could northbound traffic safely move again?
  3. The fire burned beneath the interstate near the Buford Highway Connector and Cheshire Bridge Road in Atlanta. The northbound closure affected I-85 near State Route 13, also known as Buford Highway.
  4. Smoke was visible around the roadway, with fire engines nearby and signs warning of a lane closure. Crews worked below the interstate to extinguish the outdoor fire and make sure the roads were safe.
  5. Atlanta Fire Rescue responded around 11:10 Thursday night. The traffic incident was logged at 11:38, after crews had already arrived. Firefighters brought the fire under control around 11:40. That traffic timestamp doesn't tell us when the fire began.
  6. Both directions of I-85 were temporarily shut down during the response, along with portions of Buford Highway near Cheshire Bridge Road. The disruption therefore reached beyond drivers heading north, although the later blockage update specifically concerned northbound lanes.
  7. At 12:29 Friday morning, Georgia's transportation department still listed all northbound lanes as blocked. That was after firefighters had brought the blaze under control. The entry describes the closure at that update, rather than a live guarantee of current conditions.
  8. Officials haven't released an injury assessment or findings about possible damage to the interstate. The cause of the fire is also unclear.
  9. The traffic listing also carried an end time of 1:38 Friday morning. It didn't explain whether that was an estimate. An actual reopening time hasn't been confirmed, and that listed time gives drivers no assurance the lanes were ready to carry traffic.
