The shooting occurred October 30 at the bar in the 13700 block of South Inglewood Avenue in Hawthorne, California. Officers had been called about a man with a gun. Police described the man they encountered as armed, but the available reporting does not independently establish that allegation or explain what he did before they shot him. He has not been publicly identified in the reports available for this account.2
The death is the consequential development since the first account. CBS Los Angeles reported on October 30 that the man had been hospitalized in unknown condition. ABC7’s October 31 report says he died at the hospital. Those are successive accounts, not competing descriptions of his current condition: the later death report supersedes the earlier uncertainty.21
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department assumed the investigation at Hawthorne officers’ request, CBS reported. The distinction matters: Hawthorne police were the responding agency whose officers fired; the Sheriff’s Department is investigating that shooting. The available reports do not establish an investigative finding or a determination that the use of lethal force was lawful.2
A gun report is not the sequence
The police account supplies the beginning and the outcome: a report of a man with a gun, an encounter inside the bar, police gunfire and a hospital transport. It does not supply the actions connecting those events. ABC7 explicitly reported that authorities had not released details about what led to the shooting.12
Several essential facts remain unestablished: whether investigators recovered a gun; whether the man displayed, pointed or fired a weapon; what commands officers gave; and how he responded. The available evidence also does not establish how many officers fired or how many shots they discharged. No independent eyewitness account or released video is available here to reconstruct those moments.
That is more than a missing narrative detail. An allegation that someone possessed a weapon does not, by itself, explain an officer’s decision to use lethal force. Establishing what threat officers faced—and what they and the man actually did—is the central task of this investigation, not a conclusion that can be drawn from the original call.
ABC7 reported that police detained two other people, but their connection to the encounter was unclear. The available reporting does not establish their identities, the reasons for their detention, or whether they were subsequently released or charged. Their detention is not proof that either committed a crime.1
The evening clock remains unresolved
Even the timing has not been reconciled. CBS Los Angeles’s October 30 report says officers were called around 9:30 p.m. Friday. ABC7 Los Angeles’s October 31 report instead gives approximately 10:17 p.m. as the time police responded to a call. Neither establishes the precise minute officers opened fire.21
Other reporting gives earlier times still. MyNewsLA’s October 31 account places the shooting at about 8:35 p.m. Friday. NBC-derived coverage carried by LA Times Now places firearm-related calls before 8:45 p.m. Those accounts cannot responsibly be combined with the CBS and ABC7 times into a verified chronology.115
A call, an officer’s arrival and a shooting are different events and can have different timestamps. But the available evidence does not show that different milestones explain these particular discrepancies. Assigning each reported time a convenient place in the evening would manufacture certainty rather than resolve the conflict.
The supported incident date remains Friday, October 30. ABC7’s Saturday publication date does not move the shooting to Saturday: its retrieved article gives a response time of about 10:17 p.m. without explicitly assigning that response to October 31. The unresolved problem is the conflicting evening times, not evidence of an incident occurring after the article was published.123
For now, the public account establishes a fatal police shooting inside a bar and a county investigation, but leaves the decisive encounter undescribed. A reconciled clock would help establish the sequence. The more consequential explanation is still missing: what happened between the report of a gun and the officers’ decision to fire.
