McAlister tornado caused no reported damage. Its strength is still unknown.
The brief touchdown northeast of McAlister stayed in open fields. Its EF Unknown classification confirms no wind speed—and no reported damage is not the same as an EF0 rating.

A tornado can reach the ground without leaving enough damage to establish how strong it was. The brief touchdown confirmed northeast of McAlister, New Mexico, illustrates that gap: officials confirmed a tornado, but its reported classification—EF Unknown—does not supply a wind-speed estimate. The good news is more concrete: it stayed in open fields, with no damage reported.12
The tornado touched down at 3:28 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time on Sunday, about three miles northeast of the rural community in eastern New Mexico’s Quay County. According to KVII’s account, NWS Albuquerque said the county’s emergency manager confirmed the brief tornado. That is the basis for the touchdown confirmation, not simply the fact that a warning was issued.1
Two details need to be kept separate from that confirmation. The calendar date has not been conclusively reconciled across the available records, and the tornado’s intensity remains unresolved. Neither uncertainty is a reason to describe the touchdown itself as unconfirmed.
What the warning does establish
October 25, 2026, is the supported likely date. KVII’s article, published October 26 local time, describes the event as happening Sunday afternoon, while a photo caption carries October 15. A matching Storm Prediction Center preliminary listing for October 25 records a brief tornado three miles northeast of McAlister at 21:28 UTC—the equivalent of 3:28 p.m. MDT—with confirmation from an emergency manager and no damage reported in open fields. That supports October 25 without resolving the conflicting caption.161
But a warning and a confirmed tornado answer different questions. The warning alerts people to a tornado threat; confirmation establishes that a tornado actually occurred. And the warning’s start and expiration times are not a stopwatch for the tornado. The event account calls this touchdown brief, without giving a measured duration in minutes.175
The location also has a limit worth spelling out: “three miles northeast of McAlister” identifies where the touchdown was reported relative to the community. It does not describe a three-mile tornado track. No verified path length or width is established in the available event account.1
Why unknown does not mean weak
The Enhanced Fujita scale uses damage to estimate tornado winds. Surveyors compare what they find with established damage indicators and degrees of damage, derive an estimated wind-speed range, and use that estimate to assign a rating. The National Weather Service describes the process this way:2
When tornado-related damage is surveyed, it is compared to a list of Damage Indicators (DI) and Degrees of Damage (DoD) which help better estimate the range of wind speeds the tornado likely produced. From that, a rating (from EF0 to EF5) is assigned.
That method explains the problem an open field can present. Without applicable damage evidence, there may be nothing to compare with those indicators. An absence of reported damage is an outcome, not a measurement of the wind. Calling this tornado EF0 would add a strength assessment that the reported EF Unknown classification does not provide.12
This does not establish that the McAlister tornado was especially strong, either. The honest conclusion runs in neither direction: its winds cannot be quantified from the no-damage account alone. Nor does the general rating methodology establish what an event-specific survey found here; no verified survey findings or later intensity rating are available in this account.

- A brief tornado was confirmed northeast of McAlister, remained in open fields and caused no reported damage. 1
Неизвестно
- The conflicting calendar-date references remain unreconciled. No verified later intensity rating, measured duration or track dimensions are established.
Что дальше
- An event-specific NWS record or later assessment could clarify the date and whether additional intensity evidence exists.
The reporting also supplies no injury or fatality total and no dollar-loss estimate; those omissions should not be turned into additional confirmed zeroes. The established outcome is narrower, and still welcome: a tornado reached the ground near McAlister without reported damage. Its unknown intensity should remain unknown unless evidence supports something more precise.1

- A tornado touched down near McAlister and stayed in open fields.
- No damage was reported after the brief touchdown near the rural community. Its classification is EF Unknown. How much can that tell us about the tornado's strength?
- The touchdown was about three miles northeast of McAlister, in eastern New Mexico's Quay County. That distance locates the tornado relative to the community. It doesn't measure how far the tornado traveled.
- Quay County's emergency manager confirmed the touchdown, and the National Weather Service confirmed the brief tornado. It remained in open fields, with no damage reported.
- The touchdown was reported on Sunday afternoon. October 25 is the likely calendar date, but conflicting dates still need clarification. The uncertainty concerns the date; officials have confirmed that the tornado reached the ground.
- The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for south-central Quay County on October 25. It included McAlister and Forrest. The warning covered part of that afternoon, but its start and end times don't tell us how long the tornado lasted.
- A warning alerts people to a tornado threat. Confirming a touchdown requires evidence that a tornado actually occurred. In this case, the county emergency manager supplied that confirmation. The tornado was described as brief, without a measured duration in minutes.
- The tornado is listed as EF Unknown. The touchdown confirmation stands, while its intensity remains unresolved. That classification supplies no wind-speed estimate, and the absence of reported damage doesn't give us one either.
- An open field can leave little applicable damage evidence for estimating tornado winds. Calling this tornado EF0 would add a strength assessment that hasn't been made. No reported damage, by itself, can't tell us how fast the wind blew.
- Surveyors compare tornado damage with established damage indicators and degrees of damage. Those comparisons help estimate a wind-speed range, which is then used to assign an Enhanced Fujita rating. Without applicable damage evidence, an open field can't supply that comparison.
