The man wanted in an Iowa kidnapping case was not living an entirely private life. As chef Troy Williams, he ran a San Diego restaurant kitchen, appeared on local television and told his story in a newspaper profile. U.S. Marshals say those public appearances helped confirm that he was Brian Anthony Williams, a fugitive sought for nearly 14 years.13
Deputies arrested Williams, 50, without incident on October 6, 2026, inside the Mission Beach business where he worked. The Marshals identified the location as the 3700 block of Mission Boulevard; local reporting identified it as Miss B’s Coconut Club, at 3704 Mission Boulevard. Through October 9, he remained in custody awaiting extradition to Iowa. The search has ended. The criminal case has not.133
A public career under another name
Williams was described as an original employee at Miss B’s, which opened around April 2016, and as having risen from line cook to head chef around 2017. Accounts describing about 10 years as head chef use rounded durations; they do not establish an exact promotion date or show that his restaurant employment began when the Iowa charges were filed.141899
A February 10, 2026, Times of San Diego Black History Month profile carried his account of a difficult upbringing in New York City’s Queensbridge Housing Project and his progress in the kitchen. That was the biography he presented, not an independently established childhood history. Official fugitive materials identify Iowa as his birthplace. He also appeared in a local television segment celebrating International Chef’s Day.9857100
In September, investigators developed information that Williams was living in San Diego as Troy Williams and working as a chef. Further investigation found his print and television appearances under that identity. The Marshals’ account does not identify the original tipster or establish that any particular broadcast triggered the search.13
Coworkers described their shock at discovering that their longtime colleague was a fugitive. No evidence established here shows that the restaurant or its workers knew his other identity or knowingly helped him evade arrest. How he passed identity checks, what documents he used and whether anyone assisted him remain unanswered.65
The documented fugitive chronology
- October 26, 201213
Scott County files charges in the Davenport case.
- 201313
A federal unlawful-flight charge follows in the Southern District of Iowa.
- September 202613
Investigators develop information about the San Diego chef identity.
- October 6, 2026133
Deputies arrest Williams without incident at his workplace.
The dates support nearly 14 years wanted—about 13 years and 11 months from state charges to arrest. ABC News reported “nearly 14 years on the run” on October 9. NBC News’s October 8 bulletin, published October 9, described nearly 15 years living under another identity. Those accounts may measure different periods, but the documented fugitive chronology supports the shorter figure. It does not establish when Williams reached San Diego or began using Troy Williams.1213
The woman who reached help
Behind the chef’s arrest is an alleged attack that Brittany Hamilton survived. Contemporary coverage described Hamilton as 28 and Williams’s girlfriend of approximately five years, with their relationship deteriorating. Police alleged that he arranged an abduction that initially made him appear to be another victim.596067
The Marshals date the alleged attack to October 8, 2012. According to the historical prosecution account, Hamilton and Williams were bound with duct tape and taken from their shared Davenport home. Hamilton was taken to a field near a Flying J truck stop, beaten, struck with a hard object and shot in the leg before being left in a ditch. She reached the truck stop on foot, obtained help from deputies and received medical attention.1367
Williams was subsequently found nearby with duct tape and no apparent injuries. Investigators alleged that he had staged the apparent abduction with others, identifying both a wish to end the relationship and a plan to take approximately $12,000 from a safe. The alleged scheme also included a gasoline-fueled fire at the home of Hamilton’s new boyfriend; the occupants escaped unharmed. These remain allegations against Brian Anthony Williams.67
One historical detail remains unreconciled. Radio Iowa’s October 26, 2012, report dated Hamilton’s contact with deputies at the truck stop to October 12, while the later court-based chronology places her escape in the October 8 sequence. The arrest announcement identifies October 8 as the attack date. Hamilton’s survival is supported; the precise truck-stop contact date and her longer-term medical condition are not settled by these accounts.596713
Charges are not other defendants’ verdicts
The outstanding Scott County charges are first-degree kidnapping, an assault-related offense described in the Marshals’ announcement as “assault willful injury causing serious injury,” conspiracy to commit a felony and first-degree arson. The full charging instrument and statutory counts have not been established here. The separate 2013 federal charge is unlawful flight to avoid prosecution—not another verdict on the alleged attack.13
Williams’s younger brother, Troy Andrew Williams, was convicted of conspiracy to commit a non-forcible felony involving theft. The Iowa Court of Appeals affirmed that conviction on June 11, 2014, in case 13-0801. His habitual-offender sentence was a term not exceeding 15 years, with three years before parole eligibility. That defendant was Troy Andrew, not Brian Anthony—a distinction made especially important by Brian’s later chef alias.67
Jeremy Garvin, a separate co-conspirator, was convicted in August 2013 of kidnapping, arson, willful injury and conspiracy to commit a forcible felony. His definitive final sentence is not established here. Neither his convictions nor Troy Andrew Williams’s conviction constitutes a verdict against Brian Anthony Williams.27

- Marshals found a long-wanted kidnapping suspect running a restaurant kitchen under an assumed name.
- Brian Anthony Williams faces charges over an attack on his girlfriend, who survived being shot and left in a field. He built a public career as chef Troy Williams while the case remained unresolved.
- How did that public life help investigators find him, and what happens to the case now?
- Deputy marshals arrested Williams without incident on October sixth, inside Miss B’s Coconut Club in Mission Beach. He'd become the restaurant's head chef. Authorities identify him as Brian Anthony Williams, fifty years old, wanted in a Davenport kidnapping case.
- His coworkers knew him as Troy Williams. Staff described their shock at learning their longtime colleague was a fugitive. His official birth information places him in Iowa, born in October nineteen seventy-five. His fugitive history also lists the names Andre Williams, Anthony Williams and Dre Williams.
- San Diego sits about nineteen hundred miles from the Iowa case. That's the approximate geographic separation. Investigators found Williams working in California, but the search's length doesn't tell us when he arrived there or began using Troy Williams.
- Scott County charged Williams on October twenty-sixth, twenty-twelve. A federal flight charge followed in twenty-thirteen. Investigators developed the San Diego lead this September, then arrested him on October sixth. From the state charges to his arrest, that's nearly fourteen years.
- The durations differ: nearly fourteen years wanted, versus nearly fifteen years under another identity. Those descriptions may measure different periods. The charging and arrest dates put the documented fugitive case at about thirteen years and eleven months.
- Brittany Hamilton survived the attack at the center of those charges. She was twenty-eight and had been Williams's girlfriend for about five years. Their relationship was deteriorating. Prosecutors allege Williams helped arrange an attack that initially made him appear to be another victim.
- Authorities allege Hamilton and Williams were bound with duct tape and taken from their shared home early on October eighth, twenty-twelve. Hamilton had returned from her work as an exotic dancer. The home was on Hillandale Road in Davenport.
- Prosecutors allege the attackers took Hamilton to a field near a Flying J truck stop. They beat her, struck her with a hard object and shot her in the leg. They left her in a ditch. She walked to the truck stop, reached deputies and received medical attention.
- Williams was later found nearby on West Fifty-eighth Street, with duct tape and no apparent injuries. Prosecutors allege he'd staged the apparent abduction with others. The alleged attack is dated October eighth; the exact day Hamilton reached deputies still isn't clear.
- Investigators alleged that Williams wanted to end the relationship. They also identified a plan to take about twelve thousand dollars from a safe. The alleged scheme extended to Hamilton's new boyfriend's home, where conspirators allegedly used gasoline to set a fire. The occupants escaped unharmed.
- Williams faces first-degree kidnapping, an assault charge involving serious injury, conspiracy to commit a felony and first-degree arson. Scott County filed those charges in twenty-twelve. The arson allegation concerns the fire at the new boyfriend's home.
- Federal authorities separately charged Williams in twenty-thirteen with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution in the Southern District of Iowa. That charge concerns fleeing the Davenport case. Other defendants went to trial years ago, while Brian Anthony Williams remained wanted.
- Brian's younger brother is Troy Andrew Williams. A court affirmed Troy Andrew's theft-conspiracy conviction in twenty-fourteen. His sentence was up to fifteen years, with three years before parole eligibility. Brian's later use of Troy Williams makes their separate identities especially important.
- Troy Andrew was convicted after a jury trial and accepted habitual-offender status, which affected his sentence. The appeals court identified Brian, Troy Andrew and Travis Williams as brothers. It described evidence of an agreement to take money from Brian's estranged girlfriend.
- Jeremy Garvin, from Marion, was another alleged co-conspirator. He was convicted in August twenty-thirteen of kidnapping, arson, willful injury and conspiracy to commit a forcible felony. Brian still faces prosecution on his own charges.
- Miss B’s opened around April twenty-sixteen. Williams was described as an original employee who rose from line cook to head chef around twenty-seventeen. By February this year, a Black History Month profile celebrated his career under the name Troy Williams.
- Rounded descriptions put his time at the restaurant at about ten years, with more than eight years running the kitchen. He also appeared on local television, including an International Chef's Day segment. In the February profile, he described growing up in New York's Queensbridge Housing Project.
- Investigators developed information in September that Williams was living in San Diego as Troy Williams and working as a chef. They then found his public appearances under that name. Those appearances helped confirm the person and location they were investigating.
- Williams's Queensbridge childhood story was the biography he presented. His official birthplace is Iowa. Nobody has explained how he maintained the assumed identity or passed identity checks. Investigators haven't identified the original tip that led them to his San Diego life.
- U.S. Marshal Ted Kamatchus described deputies as relentless in pursuing dangerous offenders. Their search has now located Williams at his workplace. His public appearances helped confirm his identity, and prosecutors still have to prove the allegations against him.
- Williams remained in U.S. Marshals custody through October ninth, awaiting extradition to Iowa. Officials haven't announced when he'll be transferred. His state charges concern the alleged attack and arson, and his federal charge concerns flight from prosecution.
