At least seven people were reported killed in the explosion in Bihar’s Siwan district on Friday evening, October 23, 2026. The Hindu’s updated account names five members of one family and includes two workers among the dead. It also reports two other people seriously injured and admitted to hospital. Those are documented reports, but not yet a reconciled official casualty count: other accounts still give different totals.1
Police have suspended two local personnel over alleged neglect of duty and formed a special investigation team. The immediate questions go beyond what ignited the fireworks. Investigators must establish who was inside the house, what activity was authorised there and whether officials failed to act on a danger they should have prevented.14
A death toll without a final list
The later accounts remain unreconciled. The Times of India reported five dead and three injured in its October 23 report, updated at 10:10 p.m. Hindustan Times’ October 24 account gave five dead and two missing. The Hindu’s October 24 update reported at least seven killed, while Xinhua reported at least eight that day. No official casualty list available for this report resolves those differences. Missing people cannot automatically be counted among the dead, and the highest published number is not necessarily the most complete one.618121
The reporting dates also need care. The Hindu’s seven-death version carries an update timestamp of October 24 at 10:06 a.m. Indian Standard Time. That is not the time of the explosion, nor proof that three additional people died that morning. Live Hindustan had already reported seven deaths at 7:35 p.m. on October 23. The evidence places the blast on Friday evening; it does not establish an exact clock time or a death-by-death chronology.19
The injury figures need the same distinction. The Hindu explicitly reports two people seriously injured and hospitalised; The Times of India reports three injured. Two serious injuries should therefore not be presented as a settled total for everyone hurt. The patients’ names, receiving hospitals and later conditions have not been established.16
Behind those numbers is a household struck across generations. The Hindu identifies the owner as Mohd. Amaruddin Mian, 62, and names his three granddaughters—Muskan, 22, Khushbu Kumari, 21, and Ishrat, 18—along with his son Arshad Mian. Two labourers working in the house-based unit complete its seven-person account. It does not name the workers or give Arshad’s age.1
Even that identification remains provisional. Hindustan Times’ October 24 report calls the owner Amiruddin Ahmad and describes two of the three grandchildren as minors, conflicting with The Hindu’s listed ages of 22, 21 and 18. These are differences for an identification process to settle, not spellings or ages to silently choose between.41
A house, a workplace, an investigation
Workers were reportedly preparing fireworks for the coming Deepavali festival. Accounts describe both manufacture and storage inside the house, rather than simply a stockpile awaiting sale. The building was badly damaged, but no complete count of damaged properties or monetary loss has been established.1714
The explosions did not end with the initial blast. The descriptions of what followed, however, are inconsistent: Bhaskar English described 25 minutes of explosions, while a next-day Bhaskar ground report described about 50 explosions over an hour and a half. Those accounts establish a continuing hazard, not a reliable duration.1211
Moneycontrol reported a preliminary explanation in which stored fireworks caught fire and triggered successive explosions. That is not a completed forensic finding. The first ignition source and the precise sequence remain undetermined.13
Police cordoned off the area. The Hindu’s updated account described rescue operations led by town Sub-Divisional Officer Ashutosh Kumar Gupta, with senior police officials at the scene. That records the response at the time of reporting; it does not establish that rescue work continued indefinitely afterward.1
Soni suspended Jamo station officer-in-charge Dheeraj Kumar and village watchman Chandrika Manjhi over alleged negligence. The Week places the administrative action on the evening of October 23, and The Hindu names both men. No verified suspension order setting out their specific alleged failures is available. Suspension is not a finding that either man caused the explosion or committed a crime.241
The legal status of the operation is also unresolved. The Week described it as illegal, but Hindustan Times reported on October 24 that police were checking whether the owner possessed valid papers. Neither a label nor a pending check establishes what was permitted at that particular house. No licence document has been verified showing the approved premises, quantities or whether permission covered manufacture, storage or both.244
The investigation includes a special team, a registered police case and forensic examination and evidence collection; reporting also describes a bomb-squad deployment. No completed forensic conclusion or special-team finding has been established, and no date for releasing findings has been announced.125274
The suspensions are a response, not yet an explanation. A meaningful accounting must reconcile the dead and injured, confirm the victims’ identities and establish how a house came to contain this manufacturing and storage operation. Until then, seven is a reported toll—not a closed account—and the question of preventable official failure remains open.

- Explosions tore through a house where people were making and storing fireworks.
- The reported toll is at least seven dead and two seriously injured, both taken to hospital. Two local personnel have been suspended. How many people died, and why do the casualty counts still differ?
- The house stood in Alampur village, in Bihar's Siwan district. Workers were reportedly preparing fireworks for the coming Deepavali festival. The premises served as both a manufacturing unit and a place to store fireworks.
- Police chief Bharat Soni initially confirmed four deaths. Other early figures separated people killed from people injured or missing. Those categories help explain some of the confusion, but the later numbers still haven't been reconciled.
- Preliminary figures included three dead and three injured. Another count gave five dead and three injured. A later account listed five dead and two missing, while another put deaths at eight. Missing people can't automatically be counted among the dead.
- The two serious injuries also aren't a settled total for everyone hurt, because other figures include three injured. The people described as seriously injured were admitted to hospital. Their later conditions haven't been announced.
- The explosion happened on the evening of October 23, 2026. Seven deaths were already being reported locally that night. The October 24 morning timestamp belongs to an article update. It doesn't tell us that three more people died that morning.
- Mohd. Amaruddin Mian, 62, is among those reported killed. His three granddaughters are named as Muskan, 22, Khushbu Kumari, 21, and Ishrat, 18. His son Arshad Mian and two workers are also included. Those identities and ages remain provisional.
- The owner's name also appears as Amiruddin Ahmad. Two of the grandchildren have been described as minors, conflicting with the ages just given. Police still need to resolve those differences when identifying the victims.
- The house was badly damaged. Debris from an adjoining section fell onto the road, and rubble covered the lane. The danger continued after the first blast, with fireworks exploding intermittently inside the premises.
- Descriptions of that continuing danger vary sharply: about two hours, 25 minutes, or roughly 50 explosions over an hour and a half. Those estimates don't give a reliable duration. One preliminary explanation describes stored fireworks catching fire and setting off successive explosions.
- Police cordoned off the area. During the initial response, town Sub-Divisional Officer Ashutosh Kumar Gupta led rescue operations, and senior police officials reached the site. District Magistrate Vijay Prakash Meena also visited.
- Soni suspended Jamo station officer-in-charge Dheeraj Kumar and village watchman Chandrika Manjhi on the evening of October 23. Both face allegations of neglecting their duties. Investigators still have to determine what either failed to do and who was responsible for the explosion.
- District police formed a special investigation team. The response also included a police case, forensic examination and evidence collection, with a bomb squad deployed. Investigators haven't determined what first ignited the fireworks or the exact sequence of the blasts.
- Police are checking whether the owner had valid papers. The operation has been described as both licensed and illegal, but its authorisation remains unresolved. Investigators must determine whether any permission covered manufacturing fireworks, storing them, or both inside that house.
- The final casualty total still awaits police reconciliation. The investigation must also determine how the fireworks were handled and whether officials failed to prevent the danger. No date has been announced for the special team's findings.
