Rachel’s remnants’ California and Nevada impacts
Developing
Where it stands
Rachel dissipated on October 11, but its remnants had brought damaging surf and flooding to Southern California, damaging Long Beach homes and prompting evacuations. Two people were rescued from a San Bernardino storm drain; the latest report says inland flood danger continues, and the reports do not say that evacuation and rescue operations have ended.

Update 24 hours later
Rachel dissipates, but flooded homes and inland runoff tell a different story
Several Long Beach homes were flooded and damaged as Rachel broke apart Sunday. Inland flooding and incomplete alert updates show why dissipation is not an all-clear.
What moved
- The final advisory described remnants about 255 miles north-northeast of San Diego, with sustained winds of 35 mph. Satellite imagery and surface observations showed Rachel had dissipated.
Still open after this report
- No verified stormwide casualty count, reconciled property inventory, assessed financial loss or complete road-reopening list is available. That does not mean zero casualties or minor damage.
Update 1
Rachel’s remnants collapse Long Beach homes as flood rescues spread inland
A failed waterfront bulkhead left Long Beach homes collapsing and residents displaced, while flooding trapped people inland. Rachel’s post-tropical status is no guarantee of safety.
Still open after this report
- The final casualty and damage counts, additional overnight and Monday impacts, and current evacuation and closure status remain unresolved.
