Ladner overpass strike disrupts two roads; full reopening status unclear
A tractor-trailer damaged the Ladner Trunk Road overpass, initially closing the crossing and Highway 99 southbound. A later reopening report leaves key access details unresolved.

The work after an overpass strike runs on two tracks: establishing what happened and deciding what can safely reopen. Wednesday’s tractor-trailer collision at the Ladner Trunk Road crossing in Delta, British Columbia, immediately disrupted both Highway 99 below and the road above. By late afternoon, a report indicated the highway had reopened, but the status of every southbound lane—and the crossing itself—remained unconfirmed.111
BC Highway Patrol said a white Kenworth tractor-trailer travelling southbound struck the overpass near Boundary Bay Airport around 10:30 a.m. on November 4. Officers found visible damage when they arrived. Both southbound highway lanes and the Ladner Trunk Road overpass were initially closed, with traffic heavily backed up in the area.1
The driver stopped at the scene. Police and Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement are investigating the cause, while the transportation ministry joined the work to assess whether the crossing was safe for traffic. Those are separate questions: reopening a route does not explain why the truck hit it, and finding visible damage does not establish the extent of any structural harm.1
We’re working with the BC Ministry of Transportation to ensure that the overpass is safe, and we’re asking drivers to avoid the area because delays will be significant.
The timing is approximate rather than a precisely established moment of impact. Global News reported the collision as occurring around 10:30 a.m.; the Indo-Canadian Voice reported that police received the call at 10:39 a.m. The latter is a call time, not confirmation that the impact occurred at that exact minute.13
Reopening is not one single answer
For drivers, the most important distinction is between the initial shutdown and the latest road configuration. The early police account establishes that both southbound lanes and the overpass were closed. It should not be read as proof that all those closures continued through the afternoon.1
A later CBC headline said Highway 99 in Delta had reopened. However, the accompanying available text still described a closure and did not establish a reopening time, the number of southbound lanes available or whether the Ladner Trunk Road overpass had separately reopened. The headline is an indication of progress, not a complete account of access through the site.11
As of 5:31 p.m. Pacific on November 4, the available reporting did not establish the latest official lane-by-lane status. Nor did it provide a verified detour, repair timetable or account of continuing restrictions. It would be misleading either to repeat the morning’s full shutdown as unquestionably current or to tell drivers that both routes were fully open.11514
Yanayojulikana
- Officers observed visible overpass damage, and police initially closed both southbound Highway 99 lanes and the crossing above. 1
Yasiyojulikana
- The full reopening configuration, an engineering assessment of the damage and any continuing repair restrictions have not been established.
Yanayofuata
- Look for separate confirmation of southbound highway access and access across the Ladner Trunk Road overpass.
What investigators still need to establish
The confirmed description of the damage is limited but important: it was visible to responding officers. The reporting does not establish an engineer-confirmed finding of structural danger. Closing the roads while authorities assessed the crossing was a safety measure; the closure alone is not evidence that the overpass was at risk of collapse.16
Injury status has not been established. Neither has the reason the truck made contact with the crossing. There is no verified finding that the vehicle or its load exceeded a permitted height, and no charging decision has been established. The driver’s decision to remain at the scene does not resolve those questions.19
Police are asking witnesses to help reconstruct the approach to the overpass, with particular interest in dash-camera footage from before the impact. That request reaches beyond images of the damage: investigators want evidence of how the collision developed.1
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has relevant video is asked to contact BC Highway Patrol’s Burnaby office at 604-526-9744, quoting file (1004) 2026-1918. For now, that investigation and the unanswered questions about road access remain the two unfinished parts of Wednesday’s response.1
Kama ilivyorushwa
- A tractor-trailer hit an overpass and forced two connected roads to close.
- Traffic backed up heavily after the impact near Boundary Bay Airport. Authorities began assessing the crossing's safety while police investigated the collision.
- Drivers still need to know which parts of the highway and overpass have reopened.
- The truck struck the Ladner Trunk Road overpass above Highway 99 in Delta, British Columbia. Police identified the vehicle as a white Kenworth tractor-trailer travelling southbound, near the airport.
- The collision happened around ten thirty Wednesday morning, November fourth. Police received the call minutes later. The impact time is approximate. The driver stopped and remained at the scene.
- Police initially closed both southbound lanes of Highway 99 and the Ladner Trunk Road crossing itself. That disrupted traffic beneath the overpass and across it, while authorities assessed the damage.
- Officers saw visible damage when they arrived. The transportation ministry joined the safety work to determine whether the crossing could safely carry traffic again.
- Sergeant Michael McLaughlin said police were working with the transportation ministry to ensure the overpass was safe. He asked drivers to avoid the area because significant delays were expected.
- BC Highway Patrol and Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement are investigating why the truck hit the crossing. The cause hasn't been determined. Investigators are seeking witnesses and video to help reconstruct the approach to the overpass.
- Highway 99 reportedly reopened later Wednesday. By late afternoon, it still wasn't clear how many southbound lanes were available or whether the Ladner Trunk Road overpass had separately reopened.
- Police are asking witnesses to contact BC Highway Patrol's Burnaby office. They're particularly interested in dash-camera footage from before the impact, which could help investigators work out how the collision developed.
