Pryluky strike toll rises to 20 as rescuers search for those still missing
Five children are among the dead in a residential block struck while families slept. Ukraine’s Wednesday toll has reached 28, but Pryluky’s search—and its missing-person count—remains open.

Ukraine’s air-defence war is measured in intercepted missiles, but its consequences are measured inside homes. In Pryluky on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, a Russian missile struck a five-storey apartment building while families slept. By late evening, Ukrainian officials reported 20 people dead, including five children, and rescuers were still searching. The latest count was not the end of the operation.15373
Another 55 people were injured in the northern town, including seven children, according to Chernihiv regional administration head Viacheslav Chaus. Across Ukraine, Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi put Wednesday’s death toll at 28, including two people killed in a further evening attack on Kyiv. These remain developing Ukrainian official counts, relayed by news organisations—not independently verified final totals.535772
Three generations lost in one home
Kateryna’s older daughter, Olha, survived in another room. Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi described her as the boy’s elder sister and the only survivor among those family members in the apartment. Kateryna’s husband was working abroad and was travelling home after the strike. Hromadske and Ukrainska Pravda differ on whether the apartment was on the fifth or fourth floor; that detail remains unresolved.14101
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy named three boys aged one—Oleksandr, Kyrylo and Serhii—and eight-year-old Maksym among the dead. A fifth child’s body was recovered later in the day. The checked accounts do not securely identify that child, so the four named boys must not be mistaken for the final child death toll.835
A railway worker’s family lost an eight-year-old son and a 13-year-old daughter. Their identities have not been conclusively matched to the children already named. These accounts show the depth of individual families’ losses; they cannot safely be added together as separate casualty totals or used to identify the fifth child by inference.98
The search has not closed
The death toll rose repeatedly as crews cleared rubble. Early reports gave five dead and 26 injured; later assessments moved through nine, 13 or 14, 16, 18 and 19 deaths before reaching 20. Those were successive stages of a developing search, not simultaneous alternatives to the latest count.111394074253
Rescuers also found survivors. An earlier count of 12 people rescued, including a child, rose to 15 during the afternoon. Zelenskyy said at 14:38 UTC that people remained unaccounted for. The minister’s later figure of 29 people rescued, evacuated or moved clear of fire, mostly in Pryluky, covers broader emergency assistance—not 29 people pulled from the collapsed block.1257
The national figures also require care. Zelenskyy’s evening account gave 25 dead and 100 injured in the massive combined strike. The later day-wide total of 28 is consistent with one additional confirmed death in Pryluky and two evening deaths in Kyiv. An intermediate report of 26 belongs to an earlier assessment. No final nationwide injury count matching the broader 28-death scope has been established; rolling 24-hour reports use a different window.6935772
Beyond the struck block, police had inspected 346 destroyed or damaged apartments, nine private houses and 34 vehicles by 18:30. An earlier assessment described damage to at least 15 apartment buildings and 16 private homes. These are different units and inspection scopes: 346 apartments inspected does not mean 346 destroyed, and nine houses inspected does not replace a count of 16 damaged.137
What the defensive tally cannot show
Reports published on 7 October also differed on how many missiles struck Pryluky. The BBC attributed five cruise missiles to Chaus; Ukrainska Pravda and Censor.NET reported six. His evening statement confirmed cruise-missile hits at several locations without settling the count. Zelenskyy identified the missile that hit the apartment building as a Kh-101—an official identification, not a published forensic finding.14755328
Ukraine’s Air Force bulletin, issued at about 9 a.m., covered attacks beginning at 6 p.m. on 6 October. It listed 48 cruise missiles and 130 drones launched, alongside ballistic and anti-ship missiles whose launch total was not fixed. The drone attack included Shahed-type weapons and Gerbera and Parodiya decoys; 46 Shaheds were jet-powered. The 48 cruise missiles therefore were not the complete missile launch count.2591
The Air Force reported 161 targets shot down or suppressed: five ballistic or anti-ship missiles, 39 cruise missiles and 117 drones, including 38 jet-powered Shaheds. The wording matters. Suppression and physical shoot-downs are combined; the tally does not establish that every target was destroyed by an interceptor. Six additional cruise missiles’ outcomes were still being clarified. Impacts were recorded at 18 locations and debris at five more, nationally—not just in Pryluky.258991
Zelenskyy called for Patriot missiles and additional air-defence packages, saying Ukraine counted on prompt partner deliveries. His expectation that packages would follow is not evidence that missiles had arrived, nor a dated commitment by a partner. His description of the destruction as a birthday “gift” to Vladimir Putin was condemnation, not proof of why the attack was timed for that date.296970

Yasiyojulikana
- The final missing-person count, any further rise in deaths and the outcomes for the injured remain unresolved.
Yanayofuata
- Watch for a completed search, identification of the remaining victims and concrete air-defence delivery announcements.
A large claimed defensive tally did not prevent a residential building from collapsing around sleeping families. For Pryluky’s survivors, the immediate questions are not abstract measures of interception success: they are who is still beneath the rubble, who will recover, and where the families who lost their homes can go.
Sources and supporting reference material
Kama ilivyorushwa
- A Russian missile killed 20 people in a residential block, including five children. Another 55 people were injured, and rescue crews are still searching the wreckage. Across Ukraine, the day's attacks killed 28 people. Has everyone in the collapsed building been accounted for, or could the toll rise again?
- The missile hit sleeping families at about six in the morning, Kyiv time. Pryluky lies east of Kyiv, in the northern Chernihiv region. The nationwide death toll also includes attacks in Kremenchuk, Oleksandriia and Kyiv.
- Five of the 20 people killed were children. Seven children are among the 55 injured. These are developing Ukrainian official counts, not independently verified final totals. The latest local figure replaces 19; it is not another 20 deaths.
- The building was an ordinary five-storey apartment block. Residential sections collapsed, and 30 flats in that block were reported destroyed. Families died inside their homes. That figure describes the struck building, not the full extent of damage across the town.
- The death toll climbed as crews searched the rubble: five, then nine, 13 or 14, 16, 18, 19 and finally 20. Early injury counts also changed, from 26 to 38 and eventually 55. These were successive assessments, not competing final counts.
- The police update at 18:30 local time still listed 19 deaths. The later update published at 20:56 raised that to 20. Earlier reports of four deaths and 20 or 30 injuries likewise belong to the developing search, not the latest assessment.
- The national count rose from 25 through an intermediate 26 to 28. The increase is consistent with one additional death in Pryluky and two people killed in a further evening attack on Kyiv. The latest total covers Wednesday, October seventh, 2026.
- The earlier figure of 100 injured belongs to the combined-attack account issued at 18:33 UTC. A final injury count matching the later, broader 28-death total has not been established. Rolling 24-hour tallies cover different windows and cannot replace this day's count.
- Three boys killed were aged one: Oleksandr, Kyrylo and Serhii. Eight-year-old Maksym also died. A fifth child's body was recovered later in the day. That child's identity is not securely established; the four named boys are not the final child death toll.
- Oleksandr was also called Sasha or Sashko. Those names identify one child, not an additional victim. A more precise family account gives his age as one year and nine months. Serhii also appears as Serhiy, and one English account rendered Maksym as Maxsym.
- One missile killed three generations: 58-year-old Viktoriia Bondarenko, her 37-year-old daughter Kateryna Antypenko, and Kateryna's son Oleksandr. Kateryna's older daughter, Olha, survived in another room. She was the only survivor among those family members inside the apartment.
- Kateryna's husband was working abroad and was travelling home after the strike. The apartment's floor remains unresolved: accounts describe either the fourth or fifth. The family details do not depend on choosing one version of that uncertain location.
- Police veteran Oleh Malysh, 47, was also killed. He joined the regional police rifle battalion in 2024 and later retired for health reasons. His wife was critically injured, her mother died, and a three-year-old niece was wounded.
- A railway worker's family also lost an eight-year-old son and a 13-year-old daughter. Their identities have not been conclusively matched to the already named children. These family accounts cannot be added together as separate casualty totals or used to identify the fifth child by inference.
- Rescuers found survivors as well as bodies. The number pulled from the rubble rose from 12 to 15, still including one child. During the afternoon, people remained unaccounted for. Clearance continued for more than 14 hours without a closed missing-person list.
- The later figure of 29 covers people rescued, evacuated or moved clear of fire across emergency operations, mostly in Pryluky. It does not mean 29 people were pulled from the collapsed block. The categories describe different kinds of assistance.
- The damage extends beyond the 30 flats reported destroyed in the block. Investigators had inspected 346 destroyed or damaged apartments by 18:30. That is a wider inspection count, not evidence that 346 flats were destroyed.
- The same inspection covered nine private houses and 34 vehicles. An earlier assessment described damage to at least 15 apartment buildings and 16 private homes. Nine houses inspected does not revise 16 houses damaged: the units and assessment scopes differ.
- The building's exact structural losses remain unresolved. One account describes a completely destroyed stairwell; others describe two entrances or stairwell sections. Other local sites hit included a children's and youth creativity centre and an enterprise.
- The number of missiles striking Pryluky is also unsettled: five in one account, six in others. The later regional statement confirms cruise-missile attacks at several locations but does not resolve that difference.
- The missile that hit the residential building was identified as a Kh-101 in the Ukrainian presidential account. That identification is an official account, not a published forensic finding. The preliminary identification of the wider group of missiles should not be treated as settled forensic evidence either.
- The claimed military target was the Plastmass-Pryluky enterprise, described as producing and storing components for FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles. That claim is not yet confirmed. It does not establish that the residential building was a military target or reconcile the destruction of homes.
- The broader attack began at six in the evening on October sixth. The approximately nine-in-the-morning military bulletin the next day listed 48 cruise missiles and 130 drones launched. Ballistic and anti-ship missiles were also used, but their launch total was not fixed.
- The 48 cruise missiles included Kh-101, Iskander-K and Kalibr types. The 130 drones included Shahed-type weapons and Gerbera and Parodiya decoys. Forty-six Shaheds were jet-powered. The cruise-missile figure excludes the additional ballistic and anti-ship missiles.
- The listed ballistic and anti-ship types included Iskander-M, KN-23, S-400, Zircon and Oniks. An overall estimate of about 70 missiles was separate from the military bulletin. It cannot supply the missing ballistic launch total or turn 48 into the complete missile count.
- The reported defensive tally was 161 targets: five ballistic or anti-ship missiles, 39 cruise missiles and 117 drones. Together, the missile categories total 44. Crucially, the tally combines physical shoot-downs and suppression; it does not mean every target was destroyed by an interceptor.
- The 117 drones included 38 jet-powered Shaheds. The outcomes of six additional cruise missiles were still being clarified at bulletin time. These military results are official tallies, not independently verified outcomes, and the presidential shorthand of 117 Shaheds should not erase the bulletin's broader drone and decoy categories.
- Impacts were recorded at 18 locations, with debris at five more. These are national figures, not a count of strikes in Pryluky. The large defensive tally did not prevent a residential building from collapsing around sleeping families.
- The attack fell on Vladimir Putin's birthday. The description of the destruction as a birthday gift was a condemnation, not evidence of why the attack was timed for that date. Ballistic missiles remained the greatest stated air-defence challenge, prompting a request for Patriot missiles.
- Ukraine is requesting additional air-defence missile packages and prompt partner deliveries. The expectation that packages will follow is not a documented delivery or a dated commitment by a partner. Whether those missiles reach batteries before another attack remains unresolved.
- Whether everyone in the collapsed building has been accounted for remains unknown. There is no final missing-person count, no established conclusion to the search, and no final outcome for the injured. A late update published at 23:29 confirmed that rescue operations in Pryluky were still continuing.
