Two-year-old killed by taxi in northeast Calgary parking lot

Calgary police are investigating. The initial accounts establish that a taxi struck the boy, but they do not establish how the collision happened or who bears legal responsibility. Those are still questions for the investigation, not conclusions that can be drawn from the first description of the child’s movements.12
The sequence before the hospital trip
The two initial reports describe the moments before impact somewhat differently. CTV News reported on November 2 that police said the boy ran from his father. The Canadian Press account published by Global Calgary that day said he had been with his parents and wandered away. Both describe a very young child moving away from his family before he was struck.12
That common sequence is important, but limited. Neither description establishes the boy’s exact path, the taxi’s movement or what the driver could see. The difference between running and wandering should not be turned into a settled reconstruction, much less a finding against the child, his parents or the driver.
CTV reported that the driver stayed after the collision and then drove the boy and his parents to Peter Lougheed Centre. Those details belong together: staying after the impact does not mean the driver never left the parking lot. The same account describes the subsequent journey to hospital.1
Police interviewed the taxi driver, and collision-reconstruction teams worked at the parking lot through Sunday evening, according to the Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun. An interview establishes an investigative step; it is not, by itself, evidence of a charge or an explicit police assessment that the driver was cooperating.39
What investigators have not yet established
There are also no verified findings here about speed, impairment, visibility, distraction or other contributing factors. None should be treated as established—or ruled out—on the strength of the initial accounts. The reconstruction work matters because the short sequence described publicly does not explain the mechanics of the impact.39
The account currently rests on police statements carried by local news outlets. A matching primary Calgary Police Service release has not been located. That limits the detail that can responsibly be attached to the collision, particularly its exact location and any later investigative findings.
The Canadian Press report published by Global Calgary identified the boy’s death as Calgary’s 10th pedestrian fatality of 2026. A separate official year-to-date tally has not been located, so that figure remains a reported total. It counts pedestrians across the city, not children alone and not people killed by taxis.2
The toll places this death within a wider loss of life on Calgary’s streets. It does not, on its own, establish a trend or explain what happened in this parking lot. The central unanswered issue remains how a child was struck—and whether the evidence establishes legal responsibility.
