Ocarina of Time remake leads Metacritic users at 9.6—but what does that prove?
The Switch 2 remake held 9.6 as its rating pool grew. That supports strong early approval—not unverified claims of review bombing or moderator cleanup.

How much does first place mean when a game has been out for only three days? For Nintendo’s Switch 2 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, it means a striking start—not a permanent verdict, and not proof of the review-bombing drama surrounding it.
At 17:37 UTC on November 8, 2026, Metacritic’s listing showed a user score of 9.6 out of 10 from 6,516 ratings. The site’s all-time user-score leaderboard placed the remake first, ahead of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 at 9.4. That establishes who led at that moment. It does not establish that no game has ever displayed a higher user score in Metacritic’s history.1124
The more telling development is that the displayed score held as the rating pool grew. Notebookcheck’s November 7 report, published at 22:29 UTC, put the remake at 9.6 from more than 3,900 submissions. An earlier November 8 report from iXBT recorded 5,368 ratings at the same score. The directly checked 17:37 count was larger again. These are successive observations, not competing totals for the same instant.11511
Within the remake’s 6,516 ratings, Metacritic counted 6,223 positive, 94 mixed and 199 negative. Those categories add up to the full total. The site displayed their shares as 96 percent, 1 percent and 3 percent respectively—rounded figures, not exact percentages. That is overwhelmingly favorable participation, even with a visible minority of dissatisfied users.11
Participation is the important qualification. These ratings describe accounts that chose to submit a score, not every player’s opinion or a tally of verified purchases. A rating need not include a written review, either. The numbers are useful evidence of early enthusiasm, but they cannot carry the weight of a representative audience survey.
A familiar adventure, a separate contest
Nintendo released the remake exclusively for Switch 2 on November 5. It rebuilds the Nintendo 64 adventure first released in 1998, with overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music and reworked camera and movement controls. Link and Navi still travel through Hyrule, tackling dungeon puzzles across two time periods. The attraction is familiar territory presented anew, rather than an entirely different adventure.121318
It is also competing in two different ratings systems. The Switch 2 remake had a professional-review Metascore of 96 out of 100 across 87 critic reviews in the November 8 snapshot. The Nintendo 64 original has a critic score of 99. Neither figure is a user score, and neither can be compared directly with 9.6 without acknowledging the different scales and groups of reviewers. The remake can lead the current user leaderboard while sitting below the original among critics.111
The player reactions described by Notebookcheck suggest why this version is connecting. Praise centers on its visuals, modernized controls and less frustrating dungeon exploration. But the same changes can divide an audience: some players say the adventure has become too easy, making the absence of a tougher Master Quest mode more conspicuous. Others criticize the amount of new content.1
Some reactions also describe shimmering in Hyrule’s open areas. Those are reported player impressions, not independently measured technical findings. They belong in the account of reception, but they do not turn this ratings story into a technical review of the game.1
Low scores do not prove coordination
The less secure part of the story is the suggestion that an organized campaign tried to drag the score down and moderators then cleaned it up. Notebookcheck described an unusual number of zero scores and accusations of generative AI use. The AI accusations remain unproven, and the presence of zeroes does not, by itself, establish coordinated manipulation.1
A player can dislike a remake’s difficulty, presentation or design decisions without acting dishonestly. Calling every harsh response “review bombing” would erase the distinction between criticism and an organized attempt to distort a rating. A high positive share does not resolve that distinction, either.
Notebookcheck also reported that social-media posters had observed at least 30–40 submissions disappear. That remains an unverified observation, not a confirmed moderation tally. No original public post was independently confirmed, and the available evidence does not establish why any submissions allegedly vanished. Metacritic’s ability to remove spam is not evidence that it exercised that power in this instance.1
Nor can the November 8 category totals reconstruct a deletion history. They show what the listing displayed at a particular time, not which accounts previously submitted ratings, what happened to those submissions or whether any removal changed the score.

- Ocarina of Time's remake tops Metacritic's user leaderboard with a 9.6 score.
- Thousands of ratings put the Switch 2 adventure ahead of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, just three days after launch. Did anyone coordinate the low scores, and did moderators remove any of them?
- Nintendo released the remake exclusively for Switch 2 on November 5. By November 8, its user score was still 9.6 out of ten, even as thousands more ratings accumulated.
- The latest snapshot puts Ocarina of Time first on the site's current all-time user-score leaderboard. That position reflects the ratings submitted so far. The game had been available for only three days, and both its score and its place can change.
- Ocarina of Time leads at 9.6. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 holds second at 9.4. The gap remains two-tenths of a point as the remake's rating pool grows.
- Clair Obscur had 27,500 submissions in the November 7 comparison. That count hasn't been refreshed here. For Ocarina of Time, successive snapshots show a growing audience participating while the displayed score holds steady.
- The November 7 count was reportedly above 3,900. An earlier November 8 count stood at 5,368. By the latest snapshot, it reached 6,516. Across those observations, the displayed user score stayed at 9.6.
- These are ratings from accounts that chose to submit them. They don't measure every player's opinion or identify verified purchases. A submission also doesn't necessarily include a written review. The breakdown gives a clearer picture of how favorable those submitted ratings are.
- Positive ratings number 6,223, or 96 percent in the site's rounded display. Mixed ratings total 94, or one percent. Negative ratings total 199, or three percent. Together, those categories account for all 6,516 submissions.
- Players praising the remake point to its visuals, modernized controls and less frustrating dungeon exploration. Those reactions help explain the enthusiasm around an adventure that returning players already know, rebuilt for newer hardware.
- The original arrived on Nintendo 64 in 1998. This remake adds overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes and expanded dialogue. It also brings symphonic orchestral music and reworked camera and movement controls to the familiar adventure.
- Link and Navi still travel through Hyrule, solving dungeon puzzles across two time periods. This rebuilt edition has its own listing, separate from the 1998 original and the Nintendo 3DS version, Ocarina of Time 3D. Its user ranking also measures something different from its professional reviews.
- Critics give the Switch 2 remake 96 out of 100 across 87 reviews. The Nintendo 64 original has 99 out of 100. Those professional averages use a different scale and a different group of reviewers from the user score.
- Some players say the changes make the adventure too easy. Others criticize the amount of new content and the missing Master Quest mode, which would offer a tougher challenge. Some also describe shimmering in Hyrule's open areas. Those are player reactions, rather than measured technical findings.
- Low scores also included accusations of generative AI use. Those accusations remain unproven. Some players gave zeroes, but a low score alone doesn't demonstrate coordination. Disliking the difficulty, visual presentation or design choices can be an ordinary criticism.
- Social-media users reportedly saw at least 30 to 40 submissions disappear. That count hasn't been confirmed, and the cause is unclear. Metacritic can remove spam, but these claims don't show whether that happened here.
- The current category totals can't reconstruct a deletion history or show whether removals affected the score. Whether anyone organized a campaign, or moderators took specific action, is still unclear. What the growing rating pool does show is strong early approval, with the remake holding 9.6 across 6,516 submissions.
