Atlético-MG’s supporters arrived at Arena MRV with a two-goal deficit to help their team overcome and a familiar declaration: “eu acredito” — “I believe.” But before the Copa do Brasil semifinal comeback attempt could begin, their welcome created an obstacle of its own. Dense smoke from flares and other pyrotechnics held up kickoff against Grêmio in Belo Horizonte on November 7.1
The wait ended; the comeback never materialized. Atlético drew the second leg 1–1, leaving Grêmio with a 3–1 aggregate victory and a place in the final. The home crowd’s display became a striking prelude to elimination, though there is no established evidence that the delayed start caused the result.192022
The occasion explains the intensity of the reception. Atlético had lost the first leg at Arena do Grêmio in Porto Alegre on November 1. Back at home, a place in the final depended on reversing that damage, not simply winning the return match. Atlético’s own preview set out the deficit facing the team.1810
A victory by three goals would have sent Atlético directly through. Any win by exactly two goals would have taken the tie to penalties. That was a requirement about the winning margin: scoring three times would not, by itself, have guaranteed qualification if Grêmio also scored. The supporters were urging a substantial turnaround.1
A welcome that obscured the pitch
According to ge’s account, the display started before the players entered the field. Red flares burned as Galo Doido, Atlético’s mascot, led the celebrations, and the spectacle continued through the Brazilian national anthem. Alongside “I believe,” supporters chanted “o Galo é o time da virada,” celebrating Atlético as a team capable of a comeback.1
The welcome extended beyond the stands. Supporters also greeted the team bus with flares outside Arena MRV in a reception known as a “rua de fogo,” or street of fire. Inside the ground, however, the smoke became more than scenery: it was dense enough to prevent the scheduled start from going ahead on time.1
How long the teams waited remains less certain than why they waited. In its November 7 report, ge put the delay at nine minutes. Futebolnews gave ten minutes for the same smoke-related hold-up. No official elapsed-delay record has been established to settle that difference, so neither figure should be presented as an officially confirmed duration.114
Rádio Itatiaia also reported that flare smoke delayed the start. The central event is therefore supported beyond one account, even though the precise timing remains unresolved: the teams had to wait for conditions suitable for play.13
Visibility mattered beyond the goalmouth
The explanation reported by ge went beyond whether the referee could see enough to start. The refereeing team told the press that, in circumstances like these, kickoff depended on approval from both goalkeepers and the video assistant referee team, or VAR. The stated concern included keeping the images clear enough to assess incidents during the match.1
That is an attributed explanation from the officials, not an independently established account of every clearance step taken that evening. It nevertheless identifies the practical problem: visibility mattered both to players on the field and to officials following the action through video. A dramatic entrance could not take priority over those conditions.
Nor does that explanation establish that a particular video review failed or that a camera system malfunctioned. The documented pre-match disruption was a delayed kickoff while smoke affected visibility, not an abandoned semifinal. The match subsequently went ahead and produced a completed result.12
Once play began, Atlético still faced the same sporting task it had brought home from Porto Alegre. The eventual draw left that task unfulfilled: neither a two-goal win to force penalties nor the three-goal margin needed for direct qualification. Folha and CNN Brasil reported Grêmio’s progression, while FotMob recorded the completed tie as 3–1 on aggregate.192022
The distinction is important. The smoke demonstrably interrupted the start of Atlético’s comeback attempt. The scoreline ended it. Treating the first as the explanation for the second would give the spectacle more causal weight than the evidence allows.

- Smoke from supporters’ flares held up a cup semifinal at Arena MRV. Atlético-MG needed to overturn a two-goal deficit against Grêmio, but the game ended one-all and Atlético went out. The unresolved detail is exactly how long the smoke kept the teams waiting.
- Atlético supporters’ pre-match welcome left dense smoke inside the stadium in Belo Horizonte. The teams were preparing for the second leg of their Copa do Brasil semifinal on November seventh, with a place in the final at stake.
- The delay lasted a reported nine to ten minutes. The exact duration hasn't been confirmed officially. Both timings describe the same problem: smoke dense enough to hold up the start of play.
- Both goalkeepers and the video officials had to approve the start, the refereeing team said. The video assistant referee team, or VAR, needed pictures clear enough to assess incidents. So the decision involved visibility on the pitch and the quality of the video.
- Red flares were burning before the players entered the field, with Atlético’s mascot, Galo Doido, leading the celebrations. The display continued through the Brazilian national anthem. Supporters chanted “eu acredito,” meaning “I believe,” and celebrated Atlético as a team capable of a comeback.
- Outside Arena MRV, supporters also welcomed the team bus with flares. That reception is known as a “rua de fogo,” or street of fire.
- Grêmio had given the home crowd a two-goal deficit to worry about. Atlético lost the first leg two-nil at Arena do Grêmio in Porto Alegre on November first. To reverse that result, Atlético needed a clear winning margin at home.
- A win by three goals would have taken Atlético directly into the final. Any win by exactly two goals would have sent the tie to penalties. Grêmio’s goals would count too, so Atlético needed that three-goal margin for direct qualification.
- The return leg was played on November seventh. An earlier September announcement had listed November eighth, but the later official preview scheduled it for six in the evening on the seventh. The match-day records also place the game on that date.
- Atlético finished the return leg level with Grêmio at one-all. The semifinal went ahead after the delayed kickoff, but Atlético never achieved the winning margin it needed to overturn the first-leg defeat.
- Grêmio won three-one on aggregate, the combined score across the two legs. Atlético-MG was eliminated, and Grêmio advanced to the Copa do Brasil final.
