Four lives made it ashore: Damion Allen, his girlfriend and their two cats, Biscuit and Hoops. The 35-foot sailboat did not survive. Battered by powerful waves near North Beach on Tybee Island, Georgia, on Monday night, November 2, the boat capsized and was destroyed, taking with it belongings and one of the couple’s living spaces.14
Tybee Island Fire Rescue brought both people and both animals safely to shore, with Tybee Island Police also participating in the response. The rescue ended the immediate danger. It did not settle what could be recovered from the wreck, how the beach would be cleared or how the couple would replace what they had lost.1411
Allen and his girlfriend had been living between a camper and the sailboat. That makes this more than the loss of a recreational vessel: part of their home life was aboard. Their camper is not reported lost, but the boat’s destruction removed one of the places they lived.1
A loose sail, then more water
Allen told WJCL that they were sailing toward Dataw Island, South Carolina, when they encountered strong waves in waters they did not know. One wave knocked his headsail loose. With the sail flapping in the wind, he said, it pulled the front of the boat back and forth.1
Then another large wave broke over the people and the cats. Allen described a wall of water coming toward them. The wave knocked one cat loose from his girlfriend’s hands; she passed a cat into his arms, leaving him holding the animal while also holding the helm. His account does not establish that either cat went overboard.1
His girlfriend used the radio to make a pan-pan call, an urgent request for help. Allen said he could not clearly hear the exchange, but caught a question about whether he could see the lighthouse. He turned toward it and steered toward the beach, where firefighters were waiting.1
The local reports describe a vessel driven aground in strong winds and rough water; WJCL’s fuller survivor account also describes it capsizing. Together, those accounts establish the wreck and the successful rescue, but not a complete technical sequence of how the boat rolled or became stranded. No precise incident time or detailed official account of the rescue operation is established.124
At the beach, Allen said, responders proposed getting the people off the boat first and then the cats. He refused to leave without the animals.1
Nope, you’re gonna get the cats first. I’m not leaving without cats.
That was his insistence, not a verified account of the order in which firefighters removed everyone. What is established is the result: both people and both cats reached shore safely. The reporting does not provide a detailed medical assessment, so “safely rescued” should not be stretched into a definitive claim that nobody suffered any injury.14
One small confusion survived the emergency. WSAV’s November 3 report named the cats Biscuit and Soup. In WJCL’s later account, Allen identified the second cat as Hoops and explained that first responders had misheard the name. “And so maybe his name is Soup now. Soup or Hoops? I don’t care. I’m just happy he’s safe,” he said. Biscuit was hiding during the subsequent visit.31
What the rescue could not save
The belongings Allen described losing were the ordinary contents of a life aboard: computers, video games and groceries they had just stocked up on. He specifically mentioned a Nintendo 64 and Smash Brothers. Those details give the loss a scale that the boat’s length alone cannot convey—food, equipment and familiar possessions gone together.1
There is no independently assessed dollar value for the losses, no established insurance determination and no complete inventory of what might still be retrieved. Allen’s description of belongings lost should not be mistaken for a finished salvage assessment.111
His fundraiser identifies the boat’s owners as Damion and Necol and names the cats Hoops and Biscuit. It seeks help with boat recovery, beach cleanup and rebuilding after the November 2 wreck. The appeal establishes what help is being sought, not that removal or cleanup has been completed.11

- What can still be retrieved from the wreck, whether boat removal and beach cleanup are complete, and what the couple’s immediate recovery arrangements are.
สิ่งที่จะเกิดขึ้นต่อไป
- A concrete update on salvage, cleanup and replacing the belongings and living space lost.
The clearest outcome is also the most important: everyone aboard survived. But survival and recovery are different milestones. For Allen and his girlfriend, the first is established; the second still involves a wreck, missing possessions and decisions about where to go from here.
