One child killed crossing outside Mifflinburg Elementary School

Police-attributed accounts place the collision in the 100 block of Shipton Street in Mifflinburg, Union County, shortly before 5:30 p.m. A 71-year-old man from Muncy was driving west when his vehicle struck the child. Those details establish the vehicle’s approach, but they do not explain why the driver and child came into collision.⁠6⁠11

The boy was transported to WellSpan Evangelical Hospital in Lewisburg and pronounced dead by the Union County deputy coroner, according to local coverage of police information. He died the same evening he was struck; an exact time of pronouncement has not been established.⁠24

Monday evening’s initial coverage established the fatal outcome. Tuesday’s reports added details about the driver, timing and continuing investigation. They concern the same October 19 collision, rather than a second event. The distinction matters because the date a follow-up appeared is not the date the boy was struck.⁠1⁠6⁠2

The boy has been described as a first-grader. The Daily Item’s October 20 update gives his age as six, while PennLive’s account that day says police had not released his name or age. A numerical age and identity have not been established here through an official police or coroner record. Nor does the location outside Mifflinburg Elementary School establish that the boy attended that school, was leaving classes or was participating in a school activity. The accounts identify where he was struck, but do not establish why he was there. That distinction keeps a reported location from becoming an unsupported account of his movements.⁠1⁠2

The reported crossing attempt also leaves the central questions unanswered. The coverage does not establish whether the child was in a marked crosswalk, whether a crossing signal applied, who had the right of way, or whether an adult or crossing guard was present.
