Three apprentices killed in Owode-Ede collapse after reported warning
İngilizce olarak mevcut
The unfinished shopping complex in Owode-Ede had become more than a workplace for its tiling apprentices: it was where they slept so they could carry on working the next day. Before it collapsed late on Friday, October 30, 2026, the workers had noticed that the structure was not strong, according to Osun Federal Fire Service commandant Femi Isaac. The most senior apprentice later told rescuers he had warned the others against sleeping upstairs.1
Three apprentices died and four people suffered serious injuries when the two-storey building came down in Nigeria’s Osun State. The reported warning is the most consequential detail in the account so far—not because it explains the structural failure, but because it raises the question of whether the people sleeping inside could have been protected before it happened.1
Isaac, speaking by telephone to PUNCH on Saturday, October 31, said five people survived, including one who escaped unhurt. Their supervisor was not with them when the building collapsed. The cause remains unknown, and the available reports establish neither an engineering finding nor who, beyond the apprentices, knew of any concern about the building’s strength.1
The complex stood in Ede North Local Government Area. Residents told PUNCH that a loud noise shortly before 11 p.m. drew neighbours to the site. One resident, identified only as John, described three bodies being recovered from the rubble and injured people being taken to hospital. He said firefighters and police arrived shortly after the collapse and continued searching into the early hours of Saturday.71
Isaac said the Divisional Police Officer of A Division called the fire service around 11 p.m. Friday and personnel were immediately deployed. Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps personnel also took part in the rescue operation. No confirmed completion time, or declaration that the search had ended, is established in the available reporting.1
The exact collapse time is less clear than that response sequence. OsunDefender places it at about 11 p.m.; The Nation gives 11:30 p.m. Friday while also describing it as early Saturday. PUNCH reports late Friday and quotes residents who heard the noise shortly before 11 p.m. These accounts support an overnight disaster, not a precise minute. The emergency-call time should not be treated as the moment the structure fell.7161
What the casualty figures actually mean
Isaac’s account distinguishes the survivors from their injuries: five people were rescued alive, four had serious injuries and one escaped unhurt. Those are overlapping descriptions of the same group—not five rescued people plus four injured people and another escapee. NewsVista’s account also explicitly includes an escapee among the five survivors.18
There is, however, an unresolved headcount. OsunDefender reports that seven artisans were trapped beneath the rubble, while Isaac’s three deaths and five survivors account for eight people. The reports do not establish whether the unhurt person escaped without ever being trapped. It would therefore be misleading to turn the casualty arithmetic into a definitive number buried beneath the building.71
The distinction matters at the hospital, too. Isaac said all five survivors were taken to a private hospital in Ede, but identified only four as seriously injured. Some had fractures to their legs and hands. He described the unhurt survivor as the person who had not gone to sleep early. Being taken to hospital can include an assessment; it does not, by itself, establish an injury or formal admission.1
Independent identifies the destination as Idera Specialist Hospital and reports five people hospitalised. TheGistHQ describes four people taken to hospital with fractures. These descriptions do not settle the admission count. There is no established later clinical update on the injured survivors’ condition or prognosis, and the victims’ names and ages have not been made public in the available accounts.1512
A warning is not an explanation
The account of the apprentices’ concern comes through Isaac, who said the most senior apprentice told rescuers about his warning against sleeping on the upper floor. That chain of attribution matters. It is a reported recollection of danger, not a structural assessment, and it does not identify which part of the building failed or why.1
Nor does it establish what the owner, contractor or any regulator knew before the collapse. John told PUNCH that the owner lived near the site and was present during the rescue operation. Presence at the rescue is not evidence of responsibility for the failure, and no finding assigning responsibility has been established.1
The missing records are central to any meaningful account of how this happened: a structural assessment, the building’s approval and inspection history, and evidence of who made decisions about the work and overnight stays. The available reporting establishes no approval violation, named investigating authority, announced arrest, site order or dated official next step.113
What is already clear is that the apprentices’ place of work had also become their place of rest. Three died there, and four survivors face serious injuries. Explaining the failure now requires more than repeating that the workers feared the building was weak. It requires establishing why it fell—and whether anyone had an earlier opportunity to keep them out of danger.

- A shopping complex collapsed on sleeping apprentices, killing three and seriously injuring four.
- The workers had turned their unfinished workplace into overnight accommodation so they could carry on working the next day. Why did the building fail, and what warning did the apprentices have before it came down?
- The two-storey shopping complex stood in Owode-Ede, in Nigeria's Osun State. The site is in Ede North Local Government Area. Survivors were taken to hospital in Ede after the collapse late Friday, October thirtieth.
- Osun Federal Fire Service commandant Femi Isaac says the people caught inside were tiling apprentices. They were staying at the construction site overnight, and their supervisor wasn't with them when the building fell.
- Three apprentices died, and their bodies were taken to the mortuary, Isaac says. Five people survived. Four of those survivors suffered serious injuries, while one escaped unhurt.
- The five survivors include the four seriously injured people and the person who escaped unhurt. Those are parts of the same group. But the number of people initially trapped beneath the building is harder to pin down.
- Seven artisans were reportedly trapped beneath the rubble. But three deaths and five survivors account for eight people. It's unclear whether the person who escaped was ever trapped, so the total trapped remains uncertain.
- A loud noise drew neighbours to the building shortly before eleven that night. A nearby resident, identified only as John, described three bodies being recovered and injured people being taken to hospital. He said firefighters and police arrived shortly after the collapse.
- A police divisional officer called the fire service around eleven that night, Isaac says. Fire personnel were immediately deployed. Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps personnel also took part, with search-and-rescue work continuing into the early hours of Saturday.
- The collapse itself is placed around eleven to eleven-thirty at night. The exact time is unclear, and that emergency call doesn't fix the moment the structure fell. Isaac confirmed the casualties on Saturday, October thirty-first.
- The apprentices had noticed that the building wasn't strong, Isaac says. He says the most senior apprentice told rescuers he'd warned the others against sleeping on the upper floor shortly before the structure gave way.
- The owner lived near the site and was present during the rescue operation, John said. No finding has assigned responsibility for the collapse. The warning described by the senior apprentice leaves a specific question about whether the workers could have been protected before they went to sleep.
- Some survivors suffered fractures to their legs and hands, Isaac says. He described the unhurt survivor as the one person who hadn't gone to sleep early. That person is included among the five survivors.
- Four survivors face serious injuries, but the hospital figures need care. Taking someone to hospital can include an assessment even when that person has escaped injury. The number formally admitted hasn't been clarified.
- Isaac says five people were taken to a private hospital in Ede. They were reportedly taken to Idera Specialist Hospital. There's no later update on the injured survivors' condition, and their names and ages haven't been made public.
- The cause of the collapse is still unknown. No investigating authority or dated next step has been announced. The apprentices' concern about the building's strength, and the warning against sleeping upstairs, still await an engineering explanation of why the structure failed.
