Two drivers killed in Suffolk Park crash as injury accounts differ
İngilizce olarak mevcut
Two drivers died in a three-vehicle crash on Broken Head Road near Byron Bay, but the accounts of who else was hurt do not yet agree. Police reported one critically injured passenger and said those in the third vehicle escaped injury; a separate, paramedic-based report described three people being taken to hospital. The deaths are confirmed. The full injury toll is not.13
The crash happened at Suffolk Park, south of Byron Bay, on Saturday, 31 October 2026. A woman travelling in the second vehicle was flown to Gold Coast University Hospital in critical condition. Investigators have not established what caused the collision, and neither of the drivers who died had been formally identified in the initial police account.1
Emergency services were called to Broken Head Road at about 10:30 a.m. local time. ABC reported the call as coming just after 10:30; reproduced police wording says “about 10.30am”. Those accounts establish an approximate emergency-call time, not an exact time of impact. Officers from the Tweed/Byron Police District attended.111
The driver of one vehicle was believed to be a woman in her 50s. The driver of the second was believed to be a man in his 60s. Both died at the scene. Their reported age ranges remain provisional while formal identification is pending; no names have been established for publication.1
The critically injured passenger was a woman in her 60s travelling in the second vehicle. NSW Ambulance paramedics treated her before the Westpac Helicopter took her to Gold Coast University Hospital. Critical is her last verified condition: the later same-day SBS bulletin also described her that way, and no subsequent change has been confirmed.18
Where the early accounts diverge
7NEWS, attributing its account to paramedics, reported that two cars collided head-on before a third vehicle struck the wreckage. It described three people injured, with two women and a teenager taken to hospital. That account leaves an unresolved discrepancy with the police-based reporting. It does not establish how the reported injuries fit across the three vehicles.3
Those figures cannot simply be added together. The 7NEWS report is not evidence of three additional casualties beyond the critically injured passenger. Without clarification, the defensible account is two people dead and at least one critically injured—not a settled count of everyone hurt.
AAP also described a head-on collision, but the reported sequence is not a completed investigative finding. No verified makes or models, speeds or directions of travel have been established in the available reporting. Nor has responsibility been determined. A description of how vehicles came together is not, by itself, an explanation of why.23
A familiar road, separate unanswered questions
The location carries a painful history. ABC reported that the latest crash occurred on the same stretch of road where four teenagers died on 22 October 2006, just over 20 years earlier. Five boys had celebrated a friend's birthday at a Chinese restaurant in Lismore before heading towards Byron Bay. Their car ran off the road at Broken Head.1
Corey New and Paul Morris, both 16, and Bryce Wells and Mitchell Eveleigh, both 17, died. The 17-year-old driver was the only survivor and was later sentenced to four years in jail, with a two-year non-parole period. That earlier crash is part of the road's history, not evidence of the cause of this collision.1
Investigation, diversions and an evidence appeal
Police established a crime scene after Saturday's crash. Broken Head Road was closed between Beech Drive and Broken Head Reserve Road, diversions were put in place and people were urged to avoid the area. No reopening has been verified. The closure is an established consequence of the crash, not confirmation that the road remains closed now.112
Police will prepare a report for the coroner. That step does not establish a cause or assign criminal responsibility. The immediate unanswered questions remain the collision's cause, the complete injury toll, the drivers' formal identification and whether the critically injured passenger's condition changes.12
Investigators are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact Tweed/Byron police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Footage from vehicles travelling through the area could help establish how the three vehicles came together—a question the early accounts cannot yet settle.1
