One trooper seriously wounded in San Angelo; full injury toll still unclear

The shooting happened near Culberson and Archer streets. San Angelo Police Chief Travis Griffith said everyone involved was accounted for and there was no remaining threat to the public. That was an important reassurance for the neighborhood, not an explanation of how the gunfire began or who fired.⁠1⁠2

The dated local accounts consistently place the shooting on Friday, October 23, 2026. The October 24 coverage concerns that same incident, not a second shooting. MyFOXZone reported that the trooper was wounded in the foot. Griffith described the injury as serious and the trooper’s condition as stable, an assessment repeated in KTXS’s Saturday-morning coverage. The follow-up did not establish that the trooper had recovered or left the hospital. The trooper’s name and a confirmed discharge update were absent from the available reporting. Stable was the latest reported condition, not a declaration that treatment was complete.⁠1⁠4

The other injury accounts require more care than a simple addition. San Angelo LIVE, citing Griffith, reported that one civilian was injured. MyFOXZone separately reported that a suspect suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Neither account explicitly establishes whether the wounded suspect and the person Griffith called a civilian were the same person.⁠1⁠2

Adding those descriptions together would risk counting one wounded person twice. Treating them as interchangeable would make an identification the reporting has not established. The evidence therefore does not support a definitive injury total. Nor does it establish the civilian’s identity or condition, or the wounded suspect’s condition.⁠1⁠2

There is also no established account of who caused either person’s injuries. A report that a suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds does not, by itself, show that the trooper or another officer fired a weapon. Griffith’s statement that all suspects were in custody gives the public a clear account of the immediate security situation. Multiple people were reported detained, but the available material does not establish an exact number, identify them or set out specific criminal charges. The circumstances before the shooting remain unexplained. There is no verified account of the encounter that preceded the gunfire, who fired first, whether any officer discharged a weapon or a motive. Without that sequence, it would be premature to assign responsibility for the injuries.⁠1⁠2⁠16

DPS spokesman Justin Baker announced that the Texas Rangers would take over the investigation, according to the initial reporting. That establishes an announced handover, not a finding about anyone’s conduct. Completion of the transfer has not been independently established through an incident-specific official release.⁠1

For now, the immediate public-safety concern has eased while the accounting remains unfinished. The next substantive update needs to connect the injury reports, clarify medical outcomes and explain who did what. Having everyone accounted for is not yet the same as accounting for the shooting.
