Mein Mandant wird zu Unrecht verfolgt.

- A federal judge jailed former spy chief August Hanning and his former senior aide.
- The case involves an alleged paid supply line of approximately 2,000 intelligence documents, many classified, connecting privileged government access with private consulting and foreign intelligence contacts. What, if anything, reached a foreign intelligence service—and whose security might it have exposed?
- Hanning and the second suspect, publicly identified as Manfred D., were arrested by Federal Criminal Police Office agents on October 6, 2026. An investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice put both arrest warrants into effect across October 6 and 7. Hanning’s order to remain detained was separately confirmed on October 7.
- Both men are now in pretrial detention. The available official wording does not assign each man’s detention decision to a particular day. Neither man’s guilt has been established, and no formal indictment or start of a trial is publicly established.
- Hanning, 80, led the Bundesnachrichtendienst, or BND, Germany’s foreign intelligence service, from 1998 to 2005, then worked as a private consultant. Manfred D. was his chief of staff and later worked close to successive service presidents. His later chief-of-staff tenure is described as 2012 to 2026, but that precise personnel chronology has not been independently established.
- Approximately 2,000 documents allegedly passed from Manfred D. to Hanning over the years. The alleged arrangement began in 2010: valuable BND intelligence in exchange for payment. That number measures the alleged supply to Hanning—not a verified delivery to a foreign government.
- The amount paid, payment schedule and complete transfer chronology remain unestablished. Many documents allegedly contained classified information intended for internal BND use; not every document in the total is established as classified. Descriptions of hundreds of classified documents therefore need not contradict the larger total of approximately 2,000 documents.
- Hanning is suspected of treasonous espionage, spying out state secrets, attempted treason and espionage. Manfred D. is accused of aiding and abetting attempted treason and treasonous espionage. Those are suspicions under investigation, not findings that a completed treason offense has been proven.
- Hanning allegedly used classified material to draft an analysis intended for a foreign intelligence officer. Whether it reached that officer remains undetermined. Separately, he allegedly maintained close contact with a representative of another foreign service and passed on political information.
- That political information allegedly drew partly on material supplied by Manfred D. Uncertainty about delivery of the analysis does not erase this separate allegation. But neither allegation establishes precisely what information reached a foreign recipient or what harm resulted. The suspected foreign services and clients have not been publicly identified by prosecutors.
- Most of the alleged cache is described as papers prepared for weekly intelligence briefings to the German government. Their subjects include Iran’s nuclear program, Russia’s military and the war in Ukraine. This is not an established inventory of material disclosed abroad.
- The duration accounts describe different conduct. One places document transfers over about 12 years; another describes 12 years of political information-sharing after Hanning left office. Their endpoints are unclear. They cannot be merged into one established chronology, or used to infer that sharing began immediately after his BND departure in 2005.
- The alleged 2010 agreement and the 2012–2026 personnel tenure also describe different aspects of the case, not automatically the same span. Establishing when access, payment and transmission overlapped remains part of the unanswered chronology.
- Alleged contacts with Azerbaijan’s intelligence services point toward a possible recipient. Confidential information was allegedly prepared for Azerbaijani spies, and BND secrets allegedly reached Hanning in paper and digital form. Azerbaijan remains an unconfirmed lead, not an official identification.
- Other descriptions place the suspected buyer in the Caucasus and point away from Russia or China. No publicly established communication record, named foreign contact or verified analysis delivery settles the recipient question. Preparing information for a prospective recipient is not itself proof of delivery.
- Private consulting is an alleged use of the intelligence. Possible commercial use through an agency Hanning worked through in Switzerland has also been raised, but the agency’s identity and any Swiss corporate or financial route remain unestablished. There is no complete account of how a consulting business may have monetized the material.
- Hanning’s arrest location also remains inconsistently described: Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, Nordwalde or Berlin. One account places Manfred D. in Steinfurt; another places him in Bavaria. The later Berlin account does not establish that the earlier accounts were corrected.
- Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen and Steinfurt are the two officially named arrest counties, without an explicit suspect-to-county pairing. A specific Nordwalde account places Hanning at his property there and separately describes a Berlin apartment search. A search is not an established Berlin arrest.
- The investigative lead emerged from a separate case involving the alleged abduction of Christina Block’s children. Evidence was reportedly encountered during a search connected with that case. Descriptions refer either to Hanning’s home or to searches connected with a business associated with him.
- The precise search date, location and evidentiary chain linking that discovery to the espionage investigation remain unestablished. The connection explains how investigators may have encountered relevant material; it does not establish guilt in either matter.
- Hanning’s lawyer, Leon Kruse, rejects the prosecution as unjust. His October 7 statement means, “My client is being unjustly prosecuted.” His acknowledgment that Hanning possessed confidential documents is not an admission of espionage, selling secrets or unlawfully delivering them abroad.
- The possession acknowledgment was conveyed indirectly, not as a verbatim quotation. No detailed legal explanation supporting Kruse’s objection is established, and the timing of his statement relative to the detention order is unclear. No public defense response from Manfred D. has been established.
- Green politician Konstantin von Notz called for a swift, thorough investigation and characterized the case as “An unprecedented and appalling case of treason.” That is a political judgment, not a court finding. He wants stricter rules for senior holders of intelligence secrets and stronger oversight.
- Germany is debating expanded operational powers for its intelligence services. The alleged connection between a former agency president outside government and an official close to its leadership sharpens the question of how secret access is controlled after public service. Potential damage to BND credibility, partner confidence and support for expanded powers remains a concern, not a measured outcome.
- The central question remains unanswered: which information, if any, reached a foreign service. Exposure of partner-service material, sources, operations or individuals has not been established. There is no confirmed public finding of resulting damage or documented partner decision to reduce intelligence-sharing.
- Possessing confidential papers does not settle which material was transmitted, to whom, under what agreement or with what consequences. Both suspects remain detained while the investigation proceeds, with no publicly established next hearing date.
