- Workers cut down more than 400 trees at a public golf course Trump wants redesigned. A judge has now reportedly blocked further tree removal for another two weeks. The fight is over what the court can still protect, and why the cutting couldn't wait.
- East Potomac Golf Links sits in Washington's East Potomac Park, beside the Potomac River. It's a historic public municipal course. Hundreds of trees disappeared while a lawsuit challenging the administration's plans for the park and course was still pending.
- President Donald Trump wants the course transformed into a championship or professional course. The Interior Department says this tree removal was unrelated to that proposed redesign. But the cutting changed the landscape before the judge could consider an emergency request to stop it. A later ruling can preserve less of the original site once the trees are gone.
- Government lawyers said about 430 trees had been cut. The National Park Service had marked more than 500 for removal. Those figures measure different things. The first describes completed cutting. The second describes the removal plan. The final cutting count remains unclear.
- Judge Ana Reyes described just over twelve hours of warning. The government disclosed its intention to remove hundreds of trees late Friday, October ninth. The notice was reportedly filed at 4:55 that afternoon. Workers began cutting Saturday morning, October tenth, at the start of a three-day holiday weekend. That left very little time to seek emergency intervention.
- The plaintiffs sought emergency relief Sunday, October eleventh, after the reported cutting of 430 trees. Reyes questioned officials at an emergency hearing Monday. By Tuesday, October thirteenth, the restriction had reportedly grown into a bar on further removal for another two weeks.
- Reyes told government lawyers they'd “lost credibility.” She questioned National Park Service officials about the removal and challenged Justice Department attorneys about their notice and previous assurances. “I'm furious,” she said. “I trusted you all not to do precisely what you have done.” She said she'd given the administration the benefit of the doubt, but felt deceived.
- A government attorney defended the notification as the government's best effort. Reyes replied, “You did your absolute worst.” Her criticism centered on whether the government had given the court a meaningful chance to act before making irreversible changes.
- The administration maintains that its notice was adequate and its actions were lawful. Reyes challenged whether its lawyers had misled the court. Whether the cutting also violated a specific written prohibition remains unclear. Her rebuke and the restriction on further removal are clear, while the lawsuit over the proposed redevelopment still awaits a decision.
- The government has described the tree work as routine maintenance, restoration and a separate renovation. A National Park Service official said the purpose was golf-course restoration, rather than public safety. Those descriptions leave the operation's precise scope and authorization in dispute.
- The National Mall and Memorial Parks superintendent said the plan had been on the books and workers happened to be available that weekend. But the government hasn't fully explained why that long-standing work needed to become irreversible immediately after a late-Friday notice. The Park Service also asserts authority to proceed with some work. The court is still considering the legal challenge.
- The initial pause was described as ending at seven Tuesday morning, lasting twenty-four hours, or continuing until at least Tuesday afternoon. Another account said no formal restraining order or preliminary injunction had yet been issued. The newer two-week restriction extends beyond those earlier descriptions.
- DC Preservation League, Dave Roberts and Alex Dickson brought the underlying case against the Interior Department. It was filed February thirteenth in Washington's federal district court. They challenge the administration's plans under administrative law. Their Sunday emergency motion sought a temporary restraining order, or alternatively a fourteen-day pause under the Administrative Procedure Act, which governs federal agency decisions.
- The longer restraint protects against additional tree removal. Its exact expiration and exceptions remain unclear, and there's no reliable date yet for the next hearing. The restriction gives the court more time to consider further cutting while the redevelopment challenge continues.
- The plaintiffs are seeking to contest changes before more of the landscape disappears. Hundreds of trees were already gone when their emergency request reached the judge. The court still has to decide whether the challenged redevelopment can lawfully proceed.
