  1. Gavin Smith planned to send drugs to New Zealand inside hollowed-out rope. He's going to prison, and investigators are preparing to pursue the money behind years of dealing. How far did the export plans get, and what could investigators recover?
  2. Smith received six years and nine months after admitting drug and criminal-property offences. The 44-year-old former plumber lived on Swansea Road in Pontlliw, near Swansea. His guilty pleas included conspiring to export both ketamine and cocaine.
  3. A contact calling himself The Baron discussed the operation with Smith through Signal, an encrypted messaging app. Prosecutor Ian Wright said the contact appeared to live in New Zealand. The Baron also claimed to have someone in Manchester who could supply cocaine for the proposed exports.
  4. New Zealand was the destination they discussed, with Smith handling preparations in Wales. Manchester entered the conversation through The Baron's claimed supplier. The messages described an operation stretching across those locations, although the court heard no evidence Smith actually sent cocaine to New Zealand.
  5. Police found the phone inside Smith's caravan microwave. South Wales Police had gone there on March 28 to arrest him on unrelated matters. Officers discovered a vacuum-packed kilogram of cannabis, along with ketamine, cocaine and psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms. They also uncovered equipment used to prepare drugs.
  6. A coffee grinder contained white powder and was being used to cut drugs. Officers found digital scales and a drug press under a bed. Coffee pods appeared intended for storing drugs. Access to the phone then exposed Smith's dealing history.
  7. His messages showed cannabis sales in half-kilogram quantities over the preceding ten years. Information on the phone led officers to a rented storage unit on an industrial estate. Boxes labelled with different cannabis strains held 15 vacuum-sealed bags, described as containing one pound of cannabis each.
  8. Police recovered £678 in cash and a notebook containing twelve apparently random words. Those were cryptocurrency recovery words, which let officers access a wallet holding £5,763. The cash and cryptocurrency became the subjects of separate criminal-property counts.
  9. Smith offered ketamine to The Baron for £2,000 a kilogram. He said that, if the rope method worked, a contact could provide five or six kilograms a week. Those were quantities he said he could obtain if the plan succeeded. The Baron proposed the concealment method.
  10. The Baron told Smith to hollow out lengths of rope and use an air compressor to force ketamine inside. The rope would then be sealed in bags with a vacuum sealer. He also asked Smith for his cryptocurrency-wallet details.
  11. On April 1, The Baron messaged Smith to say a rope shipment had arrived successfully in New Zealand. That message came during the ketamine discussions. It didn't specify the shipment's contents or weight. The pair then discussed using the same concealment method for cocaine.
  12. Smith admitted both export conspiracies. The rope-arrival claim came from The Baron's message, while the court was expressly told there was no evidence Smith actually sent cocaine to New Zealand. The cocaine discussions nevertheless included prices, weekly quantities and preparations.
  13. They agreed £4,000 for each kilogram of cocaine packaged and sent, starting at two kilograms weekly and potentially rising to four. In another April exchange, The Baron said cocaine would arrive in three days. Smith replied that he was ready but needed a new shrink-wrap heater. These were plans, rather than proven earnings.
  14. Swansea Crown Court heard the case remotely at Cardiff Magistrates' Court. Smith also admitted cannabis supply and possession with intent to supply, ketamine possession with intent to supply, and possession of cocaine and psilocybin. He admitted both criminal-property counts.
  15. Smith had four previous convictions covering six offences, including violent disorder and producing cannabis. His barrister, Hywel Davies, described the offending as chiefly involving Class B drugs, with a “brief excursion” into Class A drugs. Davies said Smith's messages showed he was “apprehensive” about that involvement.
  16. Davies said Smith regretted the impact on his family and was distressed about a lengthy separation from his children. He wanted to return to plumbing after prison. A proceeds-of-crime investigation will now examine his finances. The cash and cryptocurrency found don't measure the full proceeds of his dealing. Investigators still have to determine what further money they can identify and recover.
