- Russian missiles wrecked six ambulances at a Kyiv paramedic station. The bombardment killed civilians and damaged medical buildings, electricity connections and a major river crossing. Hours earlier, Moscow had agreed in principle to renewed negotiations. What has that diplomatic opening changed for the people living under attack?
- The damage stretched across both sides of the Dnipro River. Homes and essential services were hit overnight into October 22, 2026. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched 21 missiles at the capital in three waves.
- Zelenskyy gave a wider toll of two people killed and 34 injured, including five children. But the city's own casualty figures still conflict. The initial city prosecutor's count was at least one death and 24 injuries. Emergency services counted four injured children, with one hospitalized.
- The city death count ranges from one to at least two, and injuries from 22 to 24. Police counted seven injured children in Kyiv. That also conflicts with five in the wider total. Officials haven't reconciled those figures.
- Police identified the person killed in Dniprovskyi District as a 48-year-old man. Six people were injured there, including four children. The youngest was five. Those people are already included in the city count. Private houses and a car service station were damaged, and debris struck another home.
- A resident named Vladyslav described windows blowing out and a neighboring house burning. He said neighbors rescued a man and his wife from inside. In Pecherskyi District, another resident, 26-year-old Heorhii Rezhenko, described broken windows and neighbors screaming.
- The missile waves kept residents awake through the night. At least 13 explosions were heard in less than eight minutes during one wave. Parts of Kyiv then lost power and Wi-Fi. Another ballistic missile warning followed around midday, extending the danger beyond the overnight bombardment.
- Mayor Vitali Klitschko said six ambulances were wrecked at a damaged paramedic station. A building housing a medical facility in Pecherskyi was also hit. The attacks damaged the very services residents depend on when missiles strike.
- A clinic and office buildings were damaged too, along with homes, shops and cafés. City authorities reported a restaurant fire in Sviatoshynskyi District. Images from Obolon suggested severe damage to an Epicentr home-improvement store, though the extent of that damage remains unclear.
- The Southern Bridge's metro infrastructure was damaged, and authorities restricted road traffic from the right bank toward the left bank. A strike was also reported near transport infrastructure in Darnytskyi District. The restrictions disrupted movement across the river.
- In the historic center, Zelenskyy said one missile struck between the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and the Holy Presentation Monastery. Monastery buildings and nearby civilian properties were damaged. The Museum of Ukrainian Diaspora, a branch of the Museum of Kyiv History, lost windows and suffered façade and roof damage.
- No one was injured at the museum. It announced a closure of several days for repairs. The damage reached religious buildings and cultural collections' surroundings, as well as the medical facilities, residential streets and transport links elsewhere in the city.
- Electricity facilities and substations were among the reported targets. Around midday, the energy company DTEK announced emergency outages in Holosiivskyi District. Kyiv relies on exposed thermal plants and plants producing both heat and electricity. Substations also connect it to other generators, including nuclear plants in western Ukraine.
- Zelenskyy said Russia had carried out more than 170 strikes on important Ukrainian energy facilities since October 11. Repeated strikes can hit the same facility. Protection against drones doesn't necessarily stop ballistic missiles, leaving electricity connections and heating vulnerable as colder weather approaches.
- The attack reached well beyond Kyiv. Zelenskyy said 12 Ukrainian regions came under fire. The Ukrainian Air Force identified Iskander-M, S-400, Zircon and Oniks missiles in the wider assault. It also counted 210 drones, including 110 jet-powered aircraft.
- The Air Force said defenses intercepted or suppressed 181 drones, including 87 jet-powered ones. Suppression can stop a drone without physically shooting it down. Ten drones were still airborne at the morning cutoff, so the count was preliminary.
- The Air Force recorded strikes at 32 locations across Ukraine and falling debris at eight others. Those nationwide figures cover the combined attack. The drone tally gives no count of intercepted ballistic missiles. Russia separately claimed it downed 808 Ukrainian drones and reported two people wounded in Moscow. Belgorod authorities reported one man killed and another wounded.
- Zelenskyy said three missiles carried cluster warheads, which spread damage over an area. He described a 400-metre diameter. Adviser Serhii Beskrestnov identified an Iskander K5 warhead and described 400 by 400 metres. Those are different dimensions, rather than measured footprints from this strike.
- Zelenskyy accused Russia of deliberately choosing the weapon and neighborhood to maximize civilian losses. He said there was no military target nearby. Those are his allegations about intent. The civilian damage includes the damaged monastery, medical buildings and homes.
- Steve Witkoff called Vladimir Putin a humanitarian during their meeting in St Petersburg on October 21. He told him, “You are a humanitarian also, sir, and I salute that.” The missile bombardment followed hours after that meeting.
- Witkoff had also invoked President Donald Trump's humanitarian credentials. After the attack, Zelenskyy turned the description back on Moscow. He wrote that Russian “humanitarians” had launched three waves at Kyiv and used 21 missiles. He said Russia's attitude hadn't changed.
- Zelenskyy called for stronger air defenses, Patriot interceptors and further sanctions. His foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, said “appeasement, servility and flattery” wouldn't stop Russian aggression. The British government rejected Witkoff's description of Putin, pointing to thousands of Ukrainians and Russian frontline soldiers killed.
- While Kyiv faced missile alerts, Trump said a deal to settle the war was “maybe now the closest we've been.” Moscow's willingness to negotiate brought no halt to the bombardment. Residents still faced missile warnings, damaged emergency services and disrupted electricity connections.
- Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov described Putin's agreement as “in principle,” with three-way talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States envisaged after November 10. No meeting date or venue has been agreed. The casualty figures still need reconciling, and authorities haven't announced a reopening timetable for the bridge restrictions or a restoration timetable for the emergency power cuts.
