The rescue on Brazil’s BR-381 was only the first part of the emergency. After a tourism bus and a truck collided head-on near Baguari early on Monday, October 19, crews had to free trapped occupants, treat dozens of injured people and clear fuel and wreckage from the highway. The aftermath remains unresolved: five people were reported seriously injured, the casualty count needs reconciling and investigators have yet to explain the collision. 1 11
The man who died was the bus’s relief driver. He was inside the cab but was not driving when the vehicles struck each other, according to Estado de Minas, reporting information from the fire service and federal highway police. He became trapped in the wreckage and did not survive. The truck driver was also trapped; rescuers freed him alive. His subsequent medical condition has not been established. 1
Key facts
The collision happened at about 1:40 a.m. local time on October 19, 2026, in the Baguari district of Governador Valadares, in Minas Gerais state. Estado de Minas places it at kilometer 168, near Restaurante Garapa. Mobilidade BH’s account of federal highway police traffic updates gives kilometer 169. The reports identify the same stretch of highway, but the precise marker remains unresolved. 1 13
The bus belonged to Matheus Turismo and had left Belo Horizonte on an excursion journey, Estado de Minas reported. The truck was carrying a refrigerated load of mangoes. The bus’s destination is less certain: Estado de Minas names Teófilo Otoni, while R7’s October 19 report names Novo Cruzeiro. Neither account establishes whether those places were different stops on the journey or whether one destination was reported incorrectly. 1 12
What the injury figures actually count
The most consistent reported toll is one death and 41 injured, including five serious cases. But that is not a final, reconciled emergency-service tally. CNN Brasil’s October 19 headline gives 42 injured, while the article beneath it gives 41. Nothing in the available reporting establishes that the extra person represents an additional casualty rather than an internal headline discrepancy. 1 11
A smaller number—15—also appears in coverage, but it should not replace the overall injury count. G1’s earlier October 19 account describes 15 people receiving assistance. That measures a different part of the emergency response; it does not establish either the full number injured or a confirmed total transported to hospital. 2
Injured people were taken to the Hospital Regional de Governador Valadares, with the five serious cases among those reported taken there. The exact number transported has not been independently established. Nor is there a later verified hospital update on the five serious cases. Their reported condition describes the initial aftermath, not a confirmed account of how they are doing now. 1 18
The distinctions matter. A count of people assisted at the scene, a count of hospital transfers and a count of injuries are not interchangeable. Until emergency authorities provide a unified account, combining them would create a certainty the reporting does not support.
Road release was not full reopening
The response brought six ambulances from highway operator Nova 381, four units from Brazil’s mobile emergency medical service, Samu, and three fire-service crews to the crash site. Federal highway police and Civil Police also attended. Firefighters removed the relief driver’s body from the wreckage after forensic examination work. 1
Rescue was followed by another substantial task: making the road usable. Debris lay across the roadway, and fuel had leaked from the vehicles. BR-381 was closed in both directions during treatment of the injured and removal of the vehicles, while crews also carried out the cleanup. 1
Estado de Minas reported a road release at about 8 a.m.—roughly six hours and 20 minutes after the collision—but its account also described alternating traffic. G1 reported vehicles using only part of the roadway. CNN Brasil’s later-published October 19 report said federal highway police still had no forecast for full reopening. Those accounts do not establish a return to unrestricted travel at 8 a.m.; they support a prolonged closure followed by reports of restricted passage. The extent of reopening remains unclear. 1 2 11
The cause is similarly unsettled. A head-on impact describes how the vehicles collided, not why. The available reporting does not establish which vehicle crossed the center line, who was at fault, or whether speed, fatigue or a mechanical problem played any role. Those are questions for the investigation, not conclusions that can be drawn from the damage. 1
Estado de Minas said it had sought comment from Matheus Turismo and was awaiting a response. It also asked Brazil’s land transport regulator, ANTT, whether the vehicle was authorized for the excursion; that reply was pending in the published account. An unanswered authorization inquiry is not evidence that the journey was unauthorized. 1
The next consequential information is therefore specific: hospital updates on the serious cases, a reconciled injury and transport count, a definitive account of traffic restoration and a police finding on the collision’s cause. The rescue established the immediate human toll. It has not yet supplied the explanation.
As aired 16 lines
- A relief driver died trapped inside a bus after a head-on crash on BR-381.
- Five people were reported seriously injured, and rescuers closed the highway in both directions. The man who died was inside the cab but wasn't driving.
- Investigators still need to explain why the bus and truck collided head-on.
- The vehicles collided near Baguari, a district of Governador Valadares in Brazil's Minas Gerais state. The location is described as kilometer 168, near Restaurante Garapa, although another traffic update gives kilometer 169. The precise marker hasn't been reconciled.
- The collision happened at about one-forty in the morning on Monday, October nineteenth, twenty twenty-six. The bus belonged to Matheus Turismo and had left Belo Horizonte on an excursion journey.
- The truck was carrying a refrigerated load of mangoes. The bus's destination is given as Teófilo Otoni, but a second account names Novo Cruzeiro. It's unclear whether those places were different stops or whether one destination was wrong.
- Both drivers became trapped in the wreckage. Rescuers freed the truck driver alive. The bus's second driver, who was in the cab when the vehicles hit, didn't survive.
- Forty-one people are reported injured, but the injury total ranges from forty-one to forty-two and still needs reconciling. A separate figure of fifteen counts people who received assistance. That smaller number measures a different part of the emergency response.
- Injured people were taken to the Regional Hospital in Governador Valadares, including the five serious cases. The exact number transported there hasn't been confirmed. Fifteen shouldn't be treated as a confirmed hospital-transfer total.
- Nova 381, the highway operator, sent six ambulances. Samu, Brazil's mobile emergency medical service, supplied four units. Three fire-service crews also took part, bringing medical teams and rescue crews to the same stretch of highway.
- Federal highway police and Civil Police also responded. Firefighters removed the dead relief driver from the wreckage after forensic examination work. The operation then extended beyond the vehicles themselves.
- Crews had to clear debris and fuel that had leaked onto the roadway. While rescuers worked and the vehicles were removed, BR-381 stayed closed in both directions. Making the road usable again required a separate cleanup operation.
- A road release was reported at about eight that morning, roughly six hours and twenty minutes after the crash. Traffic was also described as alternating, using only part of the roadway. A return to unrestricted travel wasn't confirmed.
- A later traffic update still gave no forecast for full reopening. Drivers therefore faced a prolonged two-way closure followed by accounts of restricted passage, with the extent of reopening still unclear.
- Matheus Turismo had yet to respond to questions about the collision. Brazil's land transport regulator had also been asked to confirm the bus's authorization for the excursion, and its reply was pending.
- Hospital updates on the five serious cases and a reconciled injury and transport count are still awaited. Police haven't announced what caused the bus and truck to collide head-on.
