Four killed in Deep Ellum shootings; links among three scenes unresolved

What we said was still open

  1. The suspect’s identity, any charges, and whether investigators have established a link among the three shootings remain unverified.

    Still open

Arrests are reported, including at least one person held in connection with the nonfatal shooting, but identities, a definitive arrest count and charges remain unestablished. Investigators have not established a link among the three shootings.5930

  2. A police update allocating victims to each scene and explaining the custody decision would clarify both the toll and the scope of the investigation.

    Still open

Police’s statement establishes an aggregate of four dead and 15 injured and lists three scenes with approximate times. A complete allocation of casualties—including the outcomes of the five people shot at the store—and an explanation of each detention are still missing.279

Now

Dallas police count 19 victims across three Halloween-night shootings. We previously reported five injuries; the supported figure is 15, separate from the four deaths.

Nineteen people were killed or injured in three shootings during Halloween celebrations in Dallas’s Deep Ellum neighborhood: four died and 15 survived with injuries, according to Dallas police’s November 1 statement.27

That corrects our November 1, 2026, broadcast at 14:55 UTC, which reported four deaths and five injuries. We got the injury figure wrong. The death toll remains four, and police still identify three shootings—not an additional incident.

The distinction is explicit in the police statement: “Among the 19 victims, four were pronounced deceased and 15 were injured.” The 15 injured people are separate from the four who died. The statement establishes the police accounting at that stage, not a final determination of every patient’s eventual outcome.27

This is a correction to what we reported, not evidence that police discovered ten more victims after our broadcast. Accounts describing about 15 injuries were already circulating earlier in the day. The official statement is dated November 1, but its publication clock time and any subsequent update time have not been established. It should not be presented as a newly timed police announcement.727

The reporting record shows how the lower figure persisted. CBS News’s November 1 account reported four dead and five injured; Associated Press reporting published by ABC11 later that day gave four dead and 15 injured. The earlier figure is superseded by the explicit police total, not an equally supported alternative to it.6527

Three scenes across more than an hour

The shootings unfolded overnight into Sunday, November 1, in a neighborhood of music venues, restaurants and nightlife. Police’s official scene list supplies a clearer chronology than our earlier description that the shootings happened “within minutes.” Its approximate times span more than an hour.127

Police’s three-scene chronology

  1. November 1, approximately 12:20 a.m. local

A shooting on the 2600 block of Elm Street.

    27
  2. November 1, approximately 1:05 a.m. local

A shooting on the 2600 block of Main Street.

    27
  3. November 1, approximately 1:35 a.m. local

A shooting on the 200 block of South Crowdus Street.

    27

Earlier call-time accounts put the Elm Street report at about 12:19 a.m. and Main Street just after 1 a.m. Those small differences are less consequential than the confusion over the third scene. NBC 5’s early November 1 report described a shooting on South Ervay Street at about 3:30 a.m. The official three-scene list instead identifies South Crowdus at approximately 1:35 a.m.727

The official list is the basis for the chronology here, but it does not explain how the South Ervay report fits. Nor does it establish that every differently described emergency call concerned the same incident. The unresolved references cannot responsibly be turned into a fourth shooting or used to enlarge the casualty total.

The casualty breakdown is also incomplete. Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux told The Dallas Morning News that three people died at one location and one at another; at the third, nobody died and at least six people were wounded. That account does not map the figures fully to the three streets or allocate all 15 injuries among them.9

CBS Texas reported that five people were shot in a convenience-store parking lot around midnight during what police described as an apparent altercation. It also reported three deaths near Commerce and South Crowdus streets. Those are overlapping descriptions within the overall toll, not separate numbers to add on top of it. The five people shot at the store cannot be assumed to have all survived, and their individual outcomes have not been established.2

The store’s name and exact address remain unestablished. So does a complete account linking each person’s outcome to a scene. An apparent altercation at the store is a preliminary description of that shooting—not a proven explanation for the violence across the neighborhood.227

The arrests do not establish a connection

Comeaux said arrests had been made, but did not specify a number or charges. He also said investigators were still determining whether the shootings were related and what prompted them. Three scenes close together do not, by themselves, establish a common gunman, coordinated attack or shared motive.5

The Dallas Morning News reported at least one person in custody in connection with the shooting where nobody died. The Dallas Observer subsequently described multiple people in custody, their roles unclear, and additional shooters being sought. Our earlier reference to one person in custody should therefore not be read as a complete arrest count—or as proof that everyone detained was a charged shooter.930

A recording published by NBC News captured a speaker describing investigators interviewing people they had arrested while examining their relationship to the shootings. The same speaker said the injury count was still changing, partly because some wounded people transported themselves to hospitals. The supplied account does not identify that speaker.3

Self-transport helps explain why matching hospital arrivals to individual scenes takes time. It does not erase the distinction the police statement makes between deaths and injuries. The injured people’s identities and medical conditions have not been established in the reporting available here.3727

There is another important limit: the official casualty statement does not identify any of the 19 victims as a suspect. Whether anyone suspected of firing is among the dead or injured remains unverified. No one should be subtracted from—or added to—the total on an assumption about their role.27

The correction settles the number we should have reported. The next meaningful police accounting needs to do more than repeat that total: it needs to connect victims’ outcomes to the scenes, explain who is accused of what, and clarify whether investigators have found any relationship among the shootings.

As aired
  1. Three shootings left fifteen people injured and four dead in Deep Ellum. On November first, we reported five people injured. We got that number wrong. Nineteen people were killed or hurt during Halloween celebrations. Police still have to explain how those casualties divide among the scenes and whether the shootings were connected.
  2. The shootings happened in Dallas's Deep Ellum entertainment district, a neighborhood of music venues, restaurants and nightlife. They unfolded overnight into Sunday, November first, during Halloween celebrations. Police identify three separate scenes within the neighborhood.
  3. The correction concerns the number injured across those three shootings. The death toll remains four. Dallas police put fifteen people in the injured category, separate from those who died. That gives a total of nineteen victims in the police accounting.
  4. Our earlier November first broadcast gave four deaths and five injuries. The corrected figures are four deaths and fifteen injuries. This corrects what we told you. It doesn't mean police discovered ten more victims after that broadcast.
  5. Police had already described about fifteen injuries earlier in the day. The correction also leaves the number of shootings at three. Different descriptions of nearby streets and emergency calls have complicated the picture, but police identify three incidents in their scene list.
  6. Fifteen people survived with injuries in the police accounting at that stage. Four others died, bringing the total to nineteen victims. Those figures describe people's outcomes at that point, and the injured patients' conditions could still change.
  7. Police's casualty statement draws that separation explicitly. It counts everyone within one total, then divides them between deaths and injuries. The fifteen wounded therefore sit alongside the four people killed. Each person belongs within the nineteen-victim total.
  8. Police count nineteen victims, including four who died and fifteen who were injured. Their statement gives an overall toll across the shootings. It doesn't divide those injuries among Elm Street, Main Street and South Crowdus Street.
  9. Three people died at one location, and one died at another. At the third, at least six people were wounded and nobody died. That breakdown still needs to be matched fully to the streets, along with the rest of the fifteen injuries.
  10. Police place the Elm Street shooting at about twelve twenty a.m., Main Street at about one oh five, and South Crowdus at about one thirty-five. Those approximate local times put the three scenes across more than an hour.
  11. Our earlier description that all three happened within minutes was too compressed. Earlier call times differed slightly for Elm and Main. The bigger discrepancy involved the third scene. An early description placed a shooting on South Ervay Street at about three thirty a.m. Police's three-scene list identifies South Crowdus at about one thirty-five.
  12. Police haven't explained how that South Ervay call fits with the three shootings. Earlier descriptions also placed gunfire near Commerce and South Crowdus, while another placed it near Main and Pryor. Those street references can't yet support a complete scene-by-scene casualty count.
  13. Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said investigators hadn't determined whether the shootings were related or what prompted them. Police described an apparent altercation at a convenience-store parking lot, where five people were shot. That description concerns the store shooting.
  14. The five people shot in that parking lot are part of the overall casualties. Their individual outcomes haven't been given. Earlier descriptions placed three deaths near Commerce and South Crowdus and one on Elm, but the police statement doesn't provide a complete street-by-street breakdown.
  15. Comeaux also confirmed arrests. At least one person was described as in custody in connection with the shooting where nobody died. Police were questioning people they had arrested while investigating their roles. The earlier reference to one person in custody shouldn't be taken as the full arrest count.
  16. The injury figure changes from five to fifteen in this correction. Police had described a changing count as wounded people reached hospitals, including people who got there themselves. Matching those hospital arrivals to the shooting scenes takes time.
  17. Police still haven't given a definitive arrest count or list of charges. They're also seeking additional shooters. A fuller police accounting needs to explain who is accused of what and connect each victim's outcome to a scene. Investigators haven't linked the three shootings, and police haven't said whether anyone suspected of firing is among the nineteen people killed or injured.
