Pacific Heat Surges Past 36C as Met Office Warns Strongest El Ni7o in Living Memory

The Met Office says the Pacific warming could top 336C, with some guidance near 46C 2 record heat, fires and crop risks into 2027.

3°C does not sound like a big number until you spread it across an ocean. That is the size of the warming now forecast for the peak of this El Niño: more than three degrees above normal in the tropical Pacific, a surplus of heat over thousands of kilometres of water that the atmosphere cannot ignore 28. The Met Office warned on 21 August 2026 that the event developing over the Pacific is likely to be the strongest “in living memory” 23.

Scale is the whole story here. Forecast plumes cited on 20 August pointed to anomalies approaching 3.5°C at peak, with some guidance reaching toward ~3.5–4°C, a level described as unprecedented since about 1950 and likely the largest since the 19th century 9238. Observed sea-surface anomalies had already exceeded 5°C over a large area of the central and eastern Pacific on 18 August 9. In other words, the ocean arrived at August already running hotter than most seasonal forecasts ever ask it to run.

The warning was reported by BBC Weather journalists Ben Rich and Mark Poynting on 21 August 2026 2. Scientific American, also on 21 August, reported that the event may surpass any seen since the 19th century and usher in record hot years 3. The Hindu, carrying AFP, reported on 22 August on the British forecast of a “biggest” El Niño that would smash records and spark the hottest year 5. The Hindustan Times reported on 22 August that Pacific waters were heating “more than 3°C above normal,” with India bracing for a double hit to monsoon rains and farm output 8.

What makes this forecast unusual is not just the size but the confidence and the timing. Seasonal forecasts are normally hedged, frayed at the edges by spring predictability barriers and competing ocean signals. This time the plume members are clustering in extreme territory months before the expected late-year peak 911. New Scientist reported on 21 August that James Hansen called the El Niño “off the charts” and said it had already “blown past” previous record levels before peaking 4. A follow-up piece on 26 August said it was already the strongest on record on some measures, with the peak still to come at the end of the year 11.

That judgment matters because El Niño is not a curiosity for oceanographers. It is a redistribution of heat that reorganizes rainfall, drought, fire weather and coastal fisheries across the tropics and reaches into mid-latitudes through atmospheric teleconnections. Phys.org, carrying AFP on 21 August 2026, framed the central global risk as extreme weather worldwide, with 2027 likely the hottest year on record by far 6. Euronews, updated on 21 August, said Europe will feel effects and that experts warn 2027 could be the hottest year 7.

From Pacific heat to global risk

Indonesia is already burning. Wildfires consuming hundreds of thousands of hectares were noted in the early coverage as a present-tense consequence, not a future projection 67. That is the familiar El Niño sequence: suppressed convection and delayed rains over Maritime Southeast Asia, drying forests and peatlands that normally stay damp, followed by haze, crop stress and water shortages. When the Pacific warm pool shifts east, Indonesia and its neighbours tend to pay first.

India is bracing for the second familiar blow. The Hindustan Times account explicitly tied Pacific waters heating “more than 3°C above normal” to preparations for a double crop hit to monsoon and farm output 8. A weakened monsoon does not mean no rain; it means erratic rain, long breaks punctuated by intense bursts, with planting, reservoir refilling and rural incomes caught in between. For a country that still feeds itself substantially from the June-to-September rains, even a modest percentage shortfall at national scale can translate into large local losses.

The European dimension is slower and less direct, which is why it is easily underestimated. Euronews noted that Europe will feel effects, with the heat signal most likely to land in 2027 rather than in the autumn of the developing event 7. That lag is physical: deep ocean heat surfaces in the year after the winter peak, a pattern seen after strong El Niño peaks that were followed by potentially record warm years. The current assessment is that 2027 is very likely to test or replace recent records, a prospect that turns a Pacific forecast into a planning problem for health systems, energy grids and food importers 67.

The World Meteorological Organization hardened the language in early September. Its 1–3 September update confirmed El Niño is “firmly established” and will intensify into a very strong event, with flood, drought and heat risks extending into 2027 10. That wording closes the usual early-season debate about whether an event will couple fully between ocean and atmosphere. It has coupled. The remaining question is how far the coupled system will go.

There are still honest differences inside the numbers, and they should not be smoothed over. One strand of guidance is described as exceeding 3°C above normal at peak 28. Another, the 19 August plume discussed by Meteored, is described as approaching 3.5°C 9. Broader summaries put the possible top at ~3.5–4°C 2389. Those are not contradictory so much as different ways of describing a distribution: a central expectation above three degrees, with a fat tail toward the mid-threes and four. The sources do not agree on a single peak value, and no single peak value should be presented as settled.

Likewise, observed and forecast extremes should not be confused. An observed patch exceeding 5°C on 18 August is not the same as a basin-scale seasonal anomaly of 3°C or more at peak 9. The former shows how intense local warming has already become across a large central and eastern Pacific area; the latter describes the sustained, large-scale index that defines a super event. Both point in the same direction, but they measure different things.

The official international assessment now calls the event firmly established and strengthening, with risks carried into next year 10. The world has seen strong El Niños before; it has not, on this evidence, seen one quite like the one now assembling 238.
