Three people were aboard two helicopters that collided in midair near McMinnville, Oregon, on Thursday, October 29, 2026. Officials had not disclosed what happened to any of them: no confirmed account established whether they were injured, killed or able to escape unharmed. 1

The collision brought law enforcement, fire and medical crews to the area southeast of the city and closed Highway 233 in both directions west of Dayton. But the emergency response and road restrictions did not answer the most urgent question—the condition of the people aboard. 12 19

The Federal Aviation Administration identified the aircraft as a Robinson R22 carrying only its pilot and an Airbus H125 carrying two people, according to the Associated Press report published by The Seattle Times. The available account did not identify those people, the roles of the H125’s occupants, either aircraft’s operator or the purpose of the flights. 1

Where the helicopters came together

The collision was reported a few miles east of McMinnville Airport. The Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office gave a more specific vicinity: Southeast Highway 154, also called Lafayette Highway, near Southeast Stringtown Road, southeast of McMinnville. That locates the reported emergency, not exact impact coordinates or the final positions of the two aircraft. McMinnville is about 35 miles southwest of Portland. 12 1

The afternoon’s timestamps describe different stages of the response. They should not be read as a precise collision time or used to calculate how long crews took to reach the scene.

The sheriff’s release still had no information about the number or condition of people aboard.

KTVZ’s earlier account placed an aircraft-emergency call at 2:09 p.m. That call time, the sheriff’s report-received time and AP’s approximate response time describe different milestones; they do not establish the exact moment the helicopters collided. 18 12 1

The federal aviation information subsequently established the three-person total and the one-and-two split between the aircraft. The sheriff’s earlier lack of an occupant count was a gap in information, not evidence that the number of people involved had changed. Their conditions remained undisclosed in the available reporting. 12 1

A highway closure, not an airport shutdown

The confirmed highway restriction was on Highway 233, one mile west of Dayton, with both eastbound and westbound lanes closed. Oregon’s TripCheck entry, updated at 3:08 p.m. Thursday, advised motorists to use an alternate route. It did not establish named roads marking the closure’s endpoints or a particular detour. 17 19

Local roads were also closed, and the sheriff’s office urged the public to stay clear. No reopening estimate was available in the initial AP account, and no actual reopening has been verified. Those restrictions were documented Thursday afternoon; they are not confirmation that every closure remained unchanged afterward. 1 17

McMinnville Airport remained open Thursday despite the nearby collision, AP reported, citing the airport’s website. The airport has two paved runways on a 650-acre site. The reported location east of the airport does not support describing this as a runway collision. 1

The aircraft’s seating capacities also differ from the actual occupancy. The R22 is a two-seat helicopter; the H125 can carry up to six passengers, depending on configuration. Neither figure changes the FAA’s account of the people at risk: one aboard the R22 and two aboard the H125. 1

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The initial account described the NTSB as gathering information, not offering a finding about what caused the collision. No verified explanation establishes the helicopters’ flight paths, altitudes or communications, or assigns responsibility. 1

A midair collision is established. Pilot error, mechanical failure, an air-traffic-control failure or another specific explanation is not. The next consequential information is straightforward: a confirmed account of the three people’s conditions, a verified change in road access and substantive findings from investigators. Until then, identifying the aircraft is progress in understanding the event—not an answer about its human cost.

As aired 12 lines
  1. Two helicopters carrying three people collided in midair near McMinnville.
  2. The collision shut a highway in both directions and brought fire and medical crews to the scene. The urgent question is what happened to the three people aboard.
  3. Officials haven't disclosed the condition of any of the three people aboard. The collision happened Thursday, October 29, in Oregon. The Federal Aviation Administration identified both helicopters and confirmed how many people each was carrying.
  4. The helicopters collided a few miles east of McMinnville Airport. McMinnville is about 35 miles southwest of Portland. The sheriff's office placed the collision near Lafayette Highway and Southeast Stringtown Road, southeast of the city.
  5. Lafayette Highway is also called Southeast Highway 154. That intersection identifies the vicinity where the collision was reported.
  6. The Robinson R22 carried one person, its pilot, in a two-seat aircraft. The Airbus H125 carried two people. That helicopter can carry up to six passengers, depending on its configuration.
  7. Law enforcement, fire and medical personnel were at the scene. The sheriff's office received the report at 2:14 Thursday afternoon, and emergency crews responded around 2:15. Those times describe the emergency response.
  8. The sheriff's afternoon release still didn't give an occupant count. Federal aviation officials subsequently confirmed the total of three.
  9. Highway 233 closed one mile west of Dayton, blocking both eastbound and westbound traffic. The state's road update at 3:08 p.m. advised drivers to use an alternate route. Local roads also closed, and the sheriff urged people to stay clear.
  10. Those restrictions were documented Thursday afternoon. Officials gave no reopening estimate, and no reopening has been confirmed.
  11. McMinnville Airport remained open Thursday despite the nearby collision and road closures. The airport covers 650 acres and has two paved runways. The collision happened east of the airport.
  12. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The safety board was gathering information, and investigators haven't explained why the helicopters came together.
