After two rounds of criminal charges and a postponement from June, Russell Brand arrived at Southwark Crown Court in London on Monday, 12 October 2026, for the start of a seven-count trial concerning allegations involving six women. He has pleaded not guilty to every count. The case is moving from pre-trial hearings toward examination before a jury; none of the charges has resulted in a reported verdict. 1 12 10
The immediate development is narrower than the phrase “trial begins” might suggest. BBC News reported that jury selection was expected to begin on Monday morning. The opening-day reporting does not establish that selection had actually begun or finished, that jurors had been sworn, or that the prosecution had opened its case. Those are distinct steps, and Brand’s arrival does not confirm any of them. 1
Key facts
Brand faces three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. The alleged events span 1999 to 2009. These are the accusations the court process is to test, not established acts. The prosecution must prove its case; the seriousness of a charge does not itself establish its truth. 1 2
He arrived accompanied by his wife, Laura Gallacher, according to The Independent. Her presence is a detail of the court arrival, not evidence about the allegations. 3
How five charges became seven
The charging history explains both the size of the case and a potentially confusing feature of its description. On 4 April 2025, the Metropolitan Police announced five counts: one rape, one oral rape, one indecent assault and two sexual assaults. The original allegations concerned four women and alleged offences between 1999 and 2005. 11 12
The Crown Prosecution Service subsequently described that original case as two rape counts, one indecent-assault count and two sexual-assault counts. That was a different grouping of the same five charges: oral rape was included within the rape total. It was not an additional count. In the seven-count case now reported, the three rape counts likewise include the count originally described separately as oral rape. Adding it again would incorrectly turn seven charges into eight. 11 12 18
On 30 May 2025, Brand appeared at Southwark Crown Court and pleaded not guilty to the original five charges. Two further charges—one rape and one sexual assault, concerning two further women—were authorised on 23 December 2025. The additional alleged offences were described in the later postponement account as occurring in 2009, extending the overall alleged period beyond the original case. 16 12 18 13
Brand pleaded not guilty to those two further counts at Southwark Crown Court on 24 February 2026. Together, the original five and the additional two account for the seven charges concerning six women reported at the trial’s opening. That chronology establishes the reported totals; it does not establish whether any wording on the indictment was amended or substituted during pre-trial proceedings. 17 15 1
A delay and an unresolved date
The trial had previously been scheduled to start on 16 June 2026. The Standard reported on 30 March that it had been postponed until October. Monday’s arrival therefore follows a delay, rather than marking the original planned start. The available reporting does not establish why the trial was postponed. 10 13
There is also an unresolved difference in the accounts of the additional charges. The CPS announcement is dated 23 December 2025, and BBC News and The Guardian reported the further charges in December. The Standard’s 30 March postponement account, also carried by Yahoo, described fresh charges as having been brought in January. The accounts do not explain whether January referred to a later procedural step or was a reporting error. It should not replace the documented December authorisation date without that explanation. 12 18 19 10 13
The BBC’s opening-day account said the trial could last up to ten weeks. That is an estimate of possible duration, not a fixed timetable or a promised verdict date. It leaves room for a lengthy examination of the contested allegations without establishing when the case will conclude. 1
Known
Unknown
- The opening-day accounts do not establish whether jury selection has begun or concluded, whether jurors have been sworn, or whether the prosecution has opened. The October trial judge’s identity is also not established.
Next
- Further court reporting should establish those procedural milestones and any revised timetable, rather than infer them from the defendant’s arrival.
For the six women concerned and for Brand, the consequential change is the move toward a process that will test allegations he denies. The next substantive account must come from what happens inside court: the progress of jury selection, the prosecution’s opening and the evidence subsequently heard. At this opening-day stage, the confirmed position remains seven contested charges and no reported finding of guilt. 1 3

- How far has the court moved toward hearing the prosecution's case?
- Brand arrived at the London courthouse on October 12, accompanied by his wife, Laura Gallacher. Jury selection was expected to begin that morning, ahead of the court hearing the contested allegations.
- Brand faces three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. Together, those make seven charges concerning six women. The prosecution must prove its case against him.
- The rape total includes a count originally described as oral rape. Police listed that separately when announcing the original case. Those five charges were one rape, one oral rape, two sexual assaults and one indecent assault.
- The original allegations concerned four women and alleged events between 1999 and 2005. Prosecutors later grouped the rape and oral-rape charges together as two rape counts. That grouping kept the original case at five charges.
- Police announced the original five charges on April 4, 2025. Brand pleaded not guilty on May 30 that year. Prosecutors authorised two more charges on December 23. He pleaded not guilty to those on February 24, 2026.
- Both plea hearings took place at Southwark Crown Court. The additional charges were one rape and one sexual assault, concerning two further women. The additional alleged offences were described as occurring in 2009, extending the overall period to 1999 through 2009.
- Prosecutors authorised the further charges on December 23, 2025. Their timing has also been given as January in the later account of the trial's postponement. It's unclear whether January referred to another court step or was a mistake.
- The two additional counts brought the case to seven charges involving six women. Brand's not-guilty pleas mean each allegation remains contested as the case moves from pre-trial hearings toward examination before a jury.
- The trial had originally been scheduled to start on June 16, 2026. By March 30, it had been postponed until October. Brand's arrival on October 12 follows that delay.
- Jury selection was expected on the opening morning, and the trial could last up to ten weeks. That estimate allows for a lengthy trial, but it doesn't set a date for a verdict.
- Brand has arrived for trial. We don't yet know whether jury selection has begun or finished, or when prosecutors will open their case. He has pleaded not guilty to all seven charges, and no verdict has been reported.
